Chris Samuels about to Retire
I just heard Chris Samuels is going to retire. Can anyone confirm what is being said locally.
If so, we are really going to need some help with bringing in good talent for the our O-Line. Lets just hope we get Chris Samuels type talent. |
Re: Chris Samuels about to Retire
Samuels definitely will be on our 100th anniversary team of all-time Redskin greats. A True Redskin indeed.
|
Re: Chris Samuels about to Retire
Hadn't heard anything official. Just that it is being "strongly encouraged" by some medical professionals
|
Re: Chris Samuels about to Retire
That's really a shame, Chris has been an anchor for this team for years. He will be missed greatly. I'm glad he's getting out before any sort of life threatening injury takes place. Good luck in the future!
|
Re: Chris Samuels about to Retire
Damn that sucks. Can't blame the guy for putting health first though.
|
Re: Chris Samuels about to Retire
I thought he would as I heard the neck injury was potentially....serious. He WILL be missed on and off the field. It will help expedite the...mandatory overhaul of the O-line.
|
Re: Chris Samuels about to Retire
Heard that too today. Wish it was not true but it sounds like it may be. He has been a True Redskin.
|
Re: Chris Samuels about to Retire
wonder why so many people like to hate on him? imagine how horrible our line would be with out him? i guess we are about to find out. great redskin
|
Re: Chris Samuels about to Retire
Has there been any confirmations yet?
|
Re: Chris Samuels about to Retire
I think I can confirm, but not 100% sure and not sure when the retirement would actually happen. Like would he IR the rest of the season and then retire in the offseason? I don't know.
|
Re: Chris Samuels about to Retire
Well if we pull a Buffalo and don't do anything to replace him we'll see just how easy it is to take for granted a Pro Bowl left tackle anchoring your line for 10 straight years. Sucks that it came down to this but I'm glad he's getting out now because I'm sure he's already got health problems that will be bothering him for a long time. I hope he doesn't end up as another case where you see those sad stories about linemen who have so many medical bills but are living in poverty because the NFL refuses to pay them for all the injuries they accumulated while playing in the NFL.
Thank you for being the rock of our line for the last ten years, here's to hoping you still have a bright future ahead in retirement CS. And yes obviously this will expedite the overhaul of our line. So far it's looking like LT, RG, and RT will end up being priority moves in the offseason. Heyer is the only NFL quality backup I see on our roster at tackle, I think Rinehart can be a capable backup but I don't see him starting again mainly because there's this whole issue of him claiming he's healthy enough to play but the coaching staff saying his shoulder is keeping him out. There's something fishy about that. |
Re: Chris Samuels about to Retire
Shooooooot. Does anyone have a link? This is just going to make it that much harder to rebuild our O-line. How is this going to impact our cap? Does he get his guaranteed money still?

Confirmed on Redskins Insider

Re: Chris Samuels about to Retire
I just heard this. He was a Redskin through and through! I only wish he could have reached the SB in his stellar career.
|
Re: Chris Samuels about to Retire
The Redskins should have had somebody ready to move in at LT when Chris first started hurting. But they've always tried to put together an offensive line by patching it with older players, usually that nobody else wants.
|
Re: Chris Samuels about to Retire
I think LJ will be a suitable replacement short term. But this thread should, if the fans can, be about Samuels, his game, and his abilities. NOT just another -lets bash Dan/Vinny thread. Samuels stepped right in and played hard game in and game out. I have a ton of respect for him.

Re: Chris Samuels about to Retire
Greatest Redskin of the past decade. Good luck with the rest of your life and thanks for protecting the blindside!

Who likes to "hate on" Chris Samuels? I can honestly say that I don't remember a single person (on this website anyway) who doesn't appreciate what he's given us. |

I've been guilty of taking him for granted |

Yeah I guess we complain alot as a fan base. But just think how he will never know what it feels like to make it to the big game. He and Janson were the best for so many years now look at us. Makes me kind of sick. |

Which is actually a testament to his talents and abilities as a player. To be able to go ten seasons without having to worry about the left tackle position is a luxury few fans have. |

That brings up an interesting point -- as far as Redskins tackles go, outside of Lachey and Jacoby of the late 80's/early 90's, can anyone think of a better left and right tackle duo than Samuels and Jansen at their peak? |
Re: Chris Samuels about to Retire
As weird as this sounds, the Thomas and Samuels career ending injuries are blessing in that it woke up the team and management about the real needs of this team. This was the biggest fear going into the season and yet nothing was done about it and then it did happen. Things happen for a reason.

Re: Chris Samuels about to Retire
Sad day ppl, Chris was one of the best Lineman in Skins history, maybe a Hall Of Famer. I think this is a sign of total rebuliding for our offense next yr.

i agree. there is no way the skins can NOT ADDRESS THE O-LINE now. it simply must be their main goal this off season (outside of getting a new coach,gm and qb):) |
Re: Chris Samuels about to Retire
He's been a great Redskin for a long time mother time and injuries have just taken there toll. I wish Chris a good time now that it appears his football playing days are over. It seems to be a smart move to get out while you can still walk.
Posted at 5:44 PM ET, 10/23/2009 Chris Samuels most likely will retire UPDATED: Redskins Pro Bowl left tackle Chris Samuels has decided to sit out the remainder of this season and most likely to retire because of a severe neck injury he suffered about two weeks ago, league sources said. Samuels, who earlier this week traveled to California to consult with a specialist, has shared his decision with some at Redskins Park. The 10-year veteran has not played since suffering the injury during the Redskins' first possession in a 20-17 loss to the Carolina Panthers on Oct. 11. A source close to Samuels said he will not make a final decision on retirement until December or January. Now....If Vinny had a brain other than, uh, duh, der, um,um,um.....CS would be on the field THIS Monday pm. I remembered to save the quote from Vinny about CS status, just last week. WOW....sometimes it's just hard to believe the guy is that far out there. Imagine that. A few more nuggets from Cerrato's appearance. On the second-year receivers: "I think you'd like more production. But I think that they're making progress. And what they need is, they need to gain confidence. And if you catch balls early in the game, I think you gain confidence. And when you have confidence, I think then it just carries over. You have a carryover factor. So I think if they can get going early, just like any receiver, they get going early, I think then they become a huge factor in the game." [Those guys combined for 1 catch for 12 yards, and 1 carry for 2 yards. For the season, they've combined for 144 receiving yards, two yards more than Eagles rookie Jeremy Maclin had last week. Guess Maclin has more confidence.] On the offense: "The key is to score points....We've got to score more points." [Against some of the NFL's worst teams, the Skins scored 40 points in their first three games, and 39 points in their next three games. The Saints have scored at least 45 points three separate times in their first five games. The Patriots scored 45 points in one half on Sunday.] On Chris Samuels: "I think he's, uh, you know, doing fine, you know. It's just a mental thing, that, you know, he's got to feel better mentally, you know, I think. And, you know, it just takes a little bit of a time." [A stinger for a guy with a history of spine problems is a mental thing? Really? Well, whatever.] |

Word. Bigtime, outta-this-world props to Chris. An amazing athlete and definitely a high-character guy who looking back was a pillar of the team...it will be very hard to replace you! ...I'm curious what this does to our cap, assuming it will be handled to have the smallest possible hit? |

Man next yr, we could have like 5 new starters just on offense, 1. LT 2. G 3. RT 4. QB 5. WR 2 LOL And a new HC and System :) |

There's been plenty of folks who think he's either overrated or over the hill the past couple of years. You know, the usual crowd that's always a little quick on the trigger to write a player off as finished? I think we're all guilty of that from time to time. |
Re: Chris Samuels about to Retire
I definitely think Chris has been one of the more underappreciated Skins over the past decade.
He's been a warrior for us, that's for sure. |
Re: Chris Samuels about to Retire
I think LT is probably the most important position on the offense. The fact we never had to worry about it is something pretty special with Chris. No LT ever gives 100% protection on every play- they're usually facing the D's best lineman. But Chris was one of the best in the league. It's going to be interesting to see how this position is going to be filled going forward.

Re: Chris Samuels about to Retire
Soo the final piece has fallen, the last brick or wall that we had or the last REDSKIN we had is now gone. SNYDER IS AN ASS. Thanks for the O-LINE, good thing you bought a d-linemen for 100000000. Stupid F---.

Yep, time to rebuild. He was a great, great player. |
Re: Chris Samuels about to Retire
Yes, because Snyder is in charge of player acquisitions. Someone listens to a bit too much 106.7 -- Snyder hate radio. God I need to get my Sirius in my new car ASAP so I can stop listening to those 2nd rate "sports experts."

Re: Chris Samuels about to Retire
Sad day, we lost the one constant that we have had on the team for the past decade. Now we definately draft a OT in the 1st.
|
Re: Chris Samuels about to Retire
Great player and he will be missed. Hard to replace a Chris Samuels.
Ranks as third best all time LT for Skins behind Jacoby and Lachey, Jacoby and Lachey were better run blockers than Samuels. Still Samuels is an incredible player. Skins got caught with their pants down with player personnel moves, in particular the O-Line. I hope DS makes the right move to get rid of Cerrato. |

Let me guess...this is Snyder's fault to that CS is out the rest of the season, and a educated guess would be he will retire? As most know we need a solid O-Line, and the org. has turned there back on this aging group. Would you agree the primary function of the GM and Coaching Staff is to point out these areas of weakness and have them addressed. On a side note, I certainly hope Levi can step up and play at a high level, right away. |
Re: Chris Samuels about to Retire
This season just can't get any worse... can it?
Big props and a bigger thank you to #60 for his service. |
