Smoot Lays the Smack Down (Redskins vs. Rams)
Sigh....let's just get right to it
Jim Zorn What's the deal here? The offense runs smoothly (for the most part) from red zone to red zone, yet it's a total mess inside the red zone. And look, I realize that guys like Thomas and Sellers didn't execute but that's still no excuses for some of his decisions in the red zone. I won't rehash them, because we all know what they are-run, run, option pass. And what part of Campbell is better out of the shotgun is so foreign? As I've mentioned I'm sure too many times, I was around the Redskins a lot during Norv's final years. And one thing that always stood out was how many players would say "Norv coaches like he doesn't trust any of us to be smart enough to run his plays" Sometimes I feel like Zorn is the same way. Mike Sellers/Devin Thomas In this offense, their number won't be called too often. So they need to make plays when given the opportunity Dan Snyder Do the right thing, not the popular thing. I don't know that making a coaching change right now is the answer. I don't think it is personally, what is he going to do? Make Joe Bugel the interim coach for the rest of the year. But if and when he thinks a change is needed, make that change. Don't be "patient" just to show you can be. The fans at the end of the day just want to win. I'm just going to leave it at that today. A simple win was not going to be enough today. This next stretch of games was the opportunity for everyone (front office, coaches, players, and fans) to gain confidence in this team and this offense and get excited. Even with a win, we are off to a piss poor start. |
Re: Smoot Lays the Smack Down (Redskins vs. Rams)
Zorn, Zorn, Zorn
Right now he's the problem, and a big one. I don't agree with making a change during the season, but he's clearly on the hot seat and the flames are only getting hotter. |
Re: Smoot Lays the Smack Down (Redskins vs. Rams)
I was so hoping I was wrong about my sentiments following last week's game, but Zorn keeps proving us naysayers right.
|
Re: Smoot Lays the Smack Down (Redskins vs. Rams)
Red Zone playcalling was piss poor. Overall the production and playcalling was better. This must continue to improve or I agree we should be looking at our options at the end of the season.
D playcalling much better this week. Like the aggression. Isn't Holmgren still out there as a GM or HC, maybe we keep Zorn as OC and Holmgren helps get him straight. |
Re: Smoot Lays the Smack Down (Redskins vs. Rams)
I know Zorn is gonna catch a lot of heat this week but Moss and Sellers flat out ruined two scoring opportunities. That shouldn't be overlooked.
|
Re: Smoot Lays the Smack Down (Redskins vs. Rams)
The D rebounded great today. JC played well. Oline played decent. The running game was decent. Receivers dropped some touchdowns. Zorn's playcalling always got worse as we approach the red zone. First half play calling was much better than the second half playcalling. I disagreed with going for it at the goal line, that was insane.
|
Re: Smoot Lays the Smack Down (Redskins vs. Rams)
Cooley had a great game, nice to see Kelly contributing as well. JC played very well too. There's no reason why this offense couldn't have put up 24 points today.

If JC runs the no huddle well then keep doing it. What was the point of stopping? Also WTF was that call on 3-and goal from the 10. I mean you've got 6-4 Kelly and 6-4 Mitchell sitting on the sidelines on that play. If you're going to make that call then do it on 1st down. Not 3rd!!!! Who the fuck does he think he's fooling with that shit??????????? He should've been fired right after that call. Also the call at the end of the game...I mean everyone knew you were going to run to the left. What a dumb ass. I've had enough of this guy. He's gotta go. |
Re: Smoot Lays the Smack Down (Redskins vs. Rams)
I'm going to go out on a limb and say Zorn (at this rate) won't be back next season. I think we need to keep him for the whole season though.. The guy shows some bright spots (like in the first quarter) and then pisses all over it (lack of redzone offense)
I wouldn't be averse to a coaching change mid-season, but for some reason I don't think the players would adjust too well to such a big change like that. |
Re: Smoot Lays the Smack Down (Redskins vs. Rams)
For me the big thing was Zorn's complete lack of trust of Campbell in the red zone. Campbell showed today that he can be effective but it was clear that JZ didn't want to throw the ball inside the 20. I mean Campbell was effective with the pass all day long today, why not trust him inside the 20. JZ is my main problem, and even though I don't think it's time for him to go I do think it's time for him to shift his philosophy and start playing aggressively, both inside and outside the 20's.
The game never should've been as close as it was today. For me the problem is clear, it is still JZ's playcalling. |
Re: Smoot Lays the Smack Down (Redskins vs. Rams)
Any Idiot Who Blames Jason Campbell: JC played extremely well today. If you blame him for anything, just admit that you hate him no matter what.

Like the one dude in the gameday thread. JC could lead this team to a 50-0 win and someone would say JC was messing it up somehow. |

Zorn is on a very short leash. Unless the Skins go on a hell of a run and rip right into the playoffs, I think there's a good chance, very good chance of him not being here next year. |

Jason Candle? LOL. Ugh, I'm still reeling at the Sellers drop. Someone said that Thomas dropped a TD pass? I never saw that. |
Re: Smoot Lays the Smack Down (Redskins vs. Rams)
This was all about Jim Zorn I agree 100 percent. JC, Cooley, Kelly, Portis looked great today. Even Betts did good. Our Redzone play calling is sickening I can't stand it. Everytime we get down there we look horrible. Trust Jason and let him run this Offense please Jim. His ass is gone if this keeps up. Check out my thoughts on the game at my new blog. Prozac -Never thought I'd need it after a win.

Re: Smoot Lays the Smack Down (Redskins vs. Rams)
I'd also examine Santana Moss a little bit... Whats up with him? He basically hasn't done anything in 2 weeks. And when he did have a chance to do something, he fumbled the ball like a dope.
What's with him? I mean is he even #1 calibur anymore? Sure doesn't look like it to me.. |
Re: Smoot Lays the Smack Down (Redskins vs. Rams)
Zorn must take a look at film and make a harsh critique of himself. No problem with either 4th & 1 decsion, just a shitty call at the GL. Stretch/Zone blocking is fine outside the 10, but there are not cutback lanes that close to the GL. Should've called the same play as the previous 4th & 1 or run playaction left and roll JC back out to the strong side w/both TEs.
At first look, and I hope this is recognized, our run game is much better with Sellers leading from the backfield not on the edge Zone blocking. |
Re: Smoot Lays the Smack Down (Redskins vs. Rams)
Bill? This is Dan.
Soooo, how's the wife and kids? "Hey lookie here Billy, you have had a 2 year vacation......sooooo, how's about I send Redskin One, a sack O'cash, and maybe a piece of 6 flags your way, and you move to DC? How's that sound to you"? |

We did win today......right?

Re: Smoot Lays the Smack Down (Redskins vs. Rams)
Well on the bright side, the Pats scored 9 points today as well.

Re: Smoot Lays the Smack Down (Redskins vs. Rams)
Zorn is only here if he gets this team into the playoffs. The same likely goes for JC.
I think it is a bad idea to switch coaches midyear unless you have a real coach in waiting. The only guy on this staff that is even close to that is Jerry Gray... |
Re: Smoot Lays the Smack Down (Redskins vs. Rams)
I didn't think I would say this after last week's lost to the Giants, but next week is critical for Zorn again. He needs a win - a big win.

JZ's presser on 980am (espn980) now
|
Re: Smoot Lays the Smack Down (Redskins vs. Rams)
Well I saw alot of improvement today. The offense has definitely opened up. Sellers and Thomas had TD's in their hands and dropped them. I would imagine that Zorn will spend a lot of time this week on playcalling in the redzone. If he works that out, our offense is going to look fantastic. I think he'll learn because he's not an idiot. Stop thinking so much and making it complicated Jimbo, it doesn't have to be rocket science. Trying to outsmart the defense in the redzone is not the answer. Call something solid and execute...... And it's not mandatory to wait until 3rd down to throw into the endzone.
|
Re: Smoot Lays the Smack Down (Redskins vs. Rams)
Zorn
You did a great job calling plays between the 20s, but your redzone playcalling was absolutely awful. It was predictable. It was ineffective. It failed to take advantage of what was working (i.e., the passing game) and emphasized what wasn't working (i.e., the running game). You failed to adjust the playcalling inside of the redzone after repeated attempts at executing that offense failed. |
Re: Smoot Lays the Smack Down (Redskins vs. Rams)
Before we run Zorn out of town.
- We put up 362 yards - 7/15 46% on 3rd down. - JC was 23 of 36 0 INTs 63.8% - Not counting the kneel-down, we had 7 drives. 4 were 13+ play drives, 1 was 9 plays, only two 3 & outs I know we're playing the Rams, but Spags is a D guy and it's not outside the realm of possibility that his D will be getting better week-to-week. Also, these are not Zorn's fault: - JC two bad throws on deep balls that would've likely been TDs (Kelly & Thomas) - Moss fumble inside 10 yd line - Sellers dropped TD I remember the Gibbs' 80s well. I remember Mark Moseley being the MVP and a few 15-14 & 12-10 wins in those days. Let's take the W and hope Zorn looks at film and improves the RZ offense over the next couple of weeks. |
Re: Smoot Lays the Smack Down (Redskins vs. Rams)
Dear Jim Zorn.
I'd like to introduce you to my new friend Marko Mitchell. I'd also like to introduce you to throwing the football to the back of the endzone. Please meet my friend the slant. This is my other friend he is named the quarterback rollout. |

In fact, I posted in a thread last week that I would be looking for certain statistical production. This game was anamoly. You won't win many games in the NFL without scoring in the red zone after so many shots. |

Re: Smoot Lays the Smack Down (Redskins vs. Rams)
People keep saying Thomas dropped that one in the endzone but I thought the defender broke it up? Maybe not I haven't seen it again just asking.
