Best Training Camp Battle of 2009
This isn't a poll about which camp battle you're most excited about or which you think is the most important one. This is a poll about which one you think will be the most competitive and most likely to come down to the wire before a decision is made.

3rd CB/Nickelback-Barnes, Smoot and Tryon Off topic/ I hope that the starting RG spot becomes a competitive battle between-Bridges, Rinehart and Thomas |
Re: Best Training Camp Battle of 2009
#5 Wide Receiver. I think most people, and the FO, would like to see Marko Mitchell get it because of his size and the fact he was a draft choice. I would love to see him get it but I expect some tough competition at this position. I wouldn't be surprised if we kept 6.
|
Re: Best Training Camp Battle of 2009
I said starting LDE because I think it's bigger than Daniels vs. Jarmon. It's also Wynn and Alexander. And even if Daniels does win it, there's no guarantee that Wynn or Alexander makes the roster.
|
Re: Best Training Camp Battle of 2009
This was close between nickle corner and RT for me. Very close. Clicked cb.
|
Re: Best Training Camp Battle of 2009
based on smoots regulations, recievers has to be it. four receivers are guaranteed a spot with roydell, marko, and hagans left. those three all bring something different to the table. it really depends on what zorn is looking for. experience? roydell. height? youth? marko. versatility? hagans.
|
Re: Best Training Camp Battle of 2009
I chose RT. Although I think they feel now that Stephon Heyer is the guy I think once Mike Williams starts playing he's gonna make it interesting, especially since he's getting so much attention and everybody wants to see him succeed.
|
Re: Best Training Camp Battle of 2009
I don't think it will be Right Tackle. It seems as if it is Heyer's job to lose. He was the starting tackle at the start of last season. I know Mike Williams has lost a lot of weight but I don't think he will make it to the field until mid season.
The same goes for nickel corner, it's Smoot's until he starts blowing it in the regular season I think the choice has got to be QB. If colt starts killing it, which I know he will, Zorn will have a hard time keeping Todd on the team. |
Re: Best Training Camp Battle of 2009
It's gotta be RT. Heyer may be penciled in as the starter to begin camp, but you can't tell me if Mike Williams has a good camp he won't put some serious pressure on the coaches to start him. Heyer is hardly the kind of player you can look at and say yeah, he's got that job all locked up.
|
Re: Best Training Camp Battle of 2009
i picked R.T. because i feel its an open competition. i have to believe the skins are hoping someone really steps forward and wins the job
|
Re: Best Training Camp Battle of 2009
I picked RT fairly quickly and without too much thought and wish I could change my vote. I still think RT will be close but as a "go to the wire" battle I think the 5th WR is going to be the last decision made on cut down night and going to be the slot where the "can we find a keep the 6th as a ST guy" come into play.
|
Re: Best Training Camp Battle of 2009
LOL - just saw the tag.
|
Re: Best Training Camp Battle of 2009
I went with #5 WR, but this was a tough question. For me, it came down to the fact that I think the starting RT will be an ongoing battle until and/or unless someone clearly dominates. Meaning even if a selection is made on the last week of preseason, the "losers" are still going to be on the team, and waiting for their chance. But the #5 WR, that's more of a go/nogo situation. You either show your stuff and make the team, or you don't and you go home. For that reason, I think the coaches will have a tough decision on that position going into the last weeks of the the preseason. I almost went with Kicker, but do we have another kicker other than Suisham on roster?
As for the Starting LDE, again I think Daniels starts, with everyone else vying to prove they are the heir apparent. |
Re: Best Training Camp Battle of 2009
i picked cb because I think the players vying are so different in what they bring. I'm hoping the competitions along the line are exciting but I don't think Jarmon or Buzzbee really stand a chance of seeing any playing time in the first half of a game this preseason unless injuries pile up.

I voted before I saw your post. If I hadn't read SS's rules I'd have voted for RT. I think that there will be a lot of competition at WR at camp and during pre-season. IMO RT is SH's to lose. Had he not gone down last year Jansen would've never started. SH also stepped in at LT for CS when he went down. |
Re: Best Training Camp Battle of 2009
I picked RT only because it's been the biggest question mark of the entire offseason. Heyer goes in as the starter with all of the coaching staff's support but with a strong push by Williams he could be nudged to a backup role.
|
Re: Best Training Camp Battle of 2009
I picked RT. I feel that the more time that goes by the more Mike Williams improves.

:) CRedskinsRule, we have Dave Rayner competing with Suisham. I think that will actually be the tightest battle and will come down to Rayner nailing a 51 yarder right before halftime of the last preseason game to give the Redskins a 13-10 lead heading into the locker room. One other one that I didn't include (but probably should have) that I think could come down to the wire is the #3 RB/KR battle. But those positions won't necessarily be filled by the same person like they have in the past (Rock) |

Alexander makes it cause of his versatility. I think that's why Evans wasn't resigned. |
Re: Best Training Camp Battle of 2009
Starting RT
|
Re: Best Training Camp Battle of 2009
I think RT simply because it is the most important. All the others we have decent options with varying degrees of skills. At RT we are rally looking for one guy to stand out amongst what could be some serious mediocrity. I hope someone just shines and entrenches them self by game 3 but we'll see.

Haggans is only 5-10. News pundits are starting to talk highly of Trent Shelton 6-0. You also forgot Jaison Williams 6-5 who looked good and impressed in camp. Then you left out Keith Eloi 5-10 who also impressed and has speed similar to Moss. Just pointing out. I picked RT. I know Heyer has been named starter but they didn't hire MW to simply see if he could be a story book and with Buges I think they want him to start if he can. The sad fact is I'm happy we finally have more Lineman on both sides in case of injuries but we can't keep them all. Then I like all the new WR talent but again we can't keep them all. I'm excited to see all the RB's and hope one of the faster guys; Dorsey, Alridge can beat out either Rock or Betts, but again we can't keep them all. There's a lot of nice talent so I know I will be upset with some of these guys being let go whether they are Vets or Rookies. |

Re: Best Training Camp Battle of 2009
I said RT. I pray that this is correct.
I think that receivers may sort themselves out in terms of clearly different levels of performance for the most part. I pray that at RT everyone will have performed quite well, making them to be about equally good, thus making the decision for the week 1 start a difficult one. If this situation occurs, RT will not be the problem that many fear. |
Re: Best Training Camp Battle of 2009
I think the battle for Mike Williams right now is to get in shape and make the team. If he's the starter by opening day, it's a miracle. I do think he'll make the team, but if he beats out Heyer in the short time he's had, I'll be surprised. Heyer hasn't just been sitting on his ass since last season.

I definitely agree. Heyer is no slouch and I think he's determined to win the RT job. I voted for the CB battle, because you need to have 3 solid CB's to cover WR's especially in the NFC East. I think Barnes has a shot to take the job from Smoot. |

In the words of Johnny Carson..."I did not know that." Thanks. |

Good point 53! vallin, as for Barnes, see the article below. Barnes got a 41 on the Wonderlic. While the Wonderlic is an imperfect measure, we still have reason to think that he may pick up the defense quickly from a mental standpoint. ASHBURN, Va. (AP)—The Washington Redskins signed third-round draft pick Kevin Barnes(notes) to a four-year deal with a $782,500 bonus. Barnes is a cornerback who played at Maryland and was the 80th overall pick in April. Also Thursday, the Redskins cut two rookie free agents: defensive end Derek Walker of Illinois, and wide receiver Jaison Williams of Oregon. Barnes started all 20 games he played over the last two seasons at Maryland. He posted the highest score (41) on the Wonderlic logic-thinking test given to prospects at this year’s NFL Combine and is also well-known for a big hit that became an Internet sensation. Barnes leveled California’s Jahvid Best last season, leaving Best on the ground several minutes before the running back vomited. |

Sir....you are probably correct. I just thin MW will be supprising people. He was supposed to be the best of the best of the best when he came out of college. True he's had his issues with injuries, sat out, and gained weight, but I don't think he has lost all his abilities to block. He's healthy, and he's lost wieght. That's half the battle. Hopefully he has built up his endurance. He had Buges working with him practically one on one. Now he's out in Arizona with Dock, Heyer and another player working on all facets of the game....strength, endurance, and technique. I like Heyer, I rooted for him cause he was not drafted, but he has had trouble with run blocking in the past. Now if he has fixed this problem then keep him where he's at but if he's still struggling use someone else. Honestly I hope he has been working on this and RT is not an issue. Then we can rotate the other lineman to keep fresh legs on the field or in case of injuries. |
Re: Best Training Camp Battle of 2009
I voted RT, but now that Vick is going to be back in the league, I say cut Todd Collins,
and I'll change my vote to 2nd QB..... |
Re: Best Training Camp Battle of 2009
I would say RT . Unless Jarmon has a monster camp , Its Danials job . I hope we see alot of Orakpo at RDE and LDE atleast as a pass rusher during pre seaeson , as I believe he will end up at DE for years . As far as RT , is Bridges going to get any work at RT ? RG should be a battle if RT is not 100 % ,,, Rinehart and Bridges should compete as well . Im curious , do you guys think big Al is a lock at DT :) ? I will say , if we are improved at RT and LDE ,,,, we should kick some tail this year !

I'm glad we got him signed, and I think he'll be a solid contributor this year. |
Re: Best Training Camp Battle of 2009
RT, it is the only one that is going to come down to the wire. One of those recievers is going to separate himself from the pack and it is going to be obvious early who should stay.

I think Marko has turned some heads and now is the front runner for the 5 spot at wr IMO |

lol based on what? Camp hasn't even started yet, I'm not sure we can pencil anyone in at the #5 spot just yet. |

Last I heard from anyone inside Redskins Park (and I think this was a Stan Hixon interview), Roydell Williams is the front runner for #5 spot right now...though ultimately I think it won't be him |

Jaison,Marko and Roydell were said to be the front runners for the spot. Jaison is gone and Marko is big,can stretch the field and has caught everything thrown his way. Roydell?? Yeah thats just what we need, ANOTHER WR coming off of season ending injury. COMEON MAN!! |
Re: Best Training Camp Battle of 2009
He still has a long way to go is all I'm saying.
It's definitely premature to assume he's the #5 WR before camp even starts. |

Ill agree with that, im just sayin he has good size and speed. obviously he has great hands. put him at the 5 spot and let him develop. I wasnt saying the guy was ready to start but he does show promise of being a good wr and maybe we can get him on the field in certain situations. |
Re: Best Training Camp Battle of 2009
The big thing to see is can he get open against NFL defenses? He's a bit on the lanky side and is going to have to deal with physical corners, and he needs to learn the nuances of running routes at this level.
Roydell Williams has a leg up on him in those areas. |
