Update: Evans Signs with Niners

My fingers are crossed. We really need a run stopping end who can get some pressure.

*Just noticed that I wasn't the first to find this

I was saying weeks ago I thought Evans was an important guy to keep around, even more so now with JT out of the picture. I think he would be fine as a 2 down DE. And bring in someone like Wilson on 3rd downs.

With Taylor gone, it makes sense to bring him back. And I guess he'd have been given assurances he'd start if brought back. So then you get Smith/Oher in the first round and Freeman in the 3rd.

I would pop a top to that! For 2 years for 4 million we should throw some performance bonus in to get this done now...

Schefter says they've discussed a two-year deal in the $4 million range, but I can't tell if he means Evans and the Niners or Evans and the Redskins, or both?

Is this the same as sleeping with your underwear inside out to have a snow day? LOL.

I hope Evans decides to sign with the Skins.
It would be a huge improvement on goal line D and Short yardage D to line up Evans at one end and Daniels at the other and Haynesworth and Griffen at DT. That would be a tough line to run on. Sit Little Andre Carter down on the bench on obvious run plays.

Never heard of that. But here in Syracuse NY it snows almost every day. But if it will bring Evans back I'll give it a go. :)

You'd bring them both back? Why not just bring Evans back, and on goal line situations slide Haynesworth out and bring in Montgomery or Golston (even Alexander) as your second DT?

That is another good option, but you need depth at DE. I have always been in favor of keeping two pass rushers and two run stoppers at DE and sub them as needed. Due to Daniels injury last year we only had one run stopper Evans.

For true Goaline D you usually line up 3 DT's (Haynesworth, Griffen and Montgomery) and 2 DE's (Daniel and Evans).
For short yardage 4-3 I would lne up Griffen and Daniels at DT and Daniels and Evans at DE.
It would be tough run on those D-lines.

Although I will say in the Power Situations you speak of, that might not be the case.

I respectfully disagree.
AC is a good player and a good pass rusher, he is very good in the open field. He is not good in tight spaces against the run, Which kind of makes him a little bit (not completely) one dimensional. Which is why we need a run stopper to sub in for him on occasions.
Did you see the Ravens game? The Ravens ran the off balance O-line and had a field day against AC. I also remember the replay of Jason Whitten knocking the snot out of AC on a run play during one of the Dallas games. I do not want my DE to man handled by a TE. Not good.
Flozzell Adams would push him around pretty good on a run play.

Further down in that link was a story that jake Grove signed with Miami. He would have been good to make a run at. Oh well...

LMAO... i was surprised to see Evans really isn't asking for a ton.

I know GTripp dissagrees but i think we'd be short-sighted to not sign Evans. I say give him a 3 year deal as he's never been injured and even though 29 has very little wear and tear.

I would have thought he could get more than that since he has Drew on his side and Canty signed for 7 million a year.

I definitely think that Evans and Canty are compareable.

BTW. Huge plus that he left town without a deal. I view that as the skins have the last say in this.

I completely agree. I think Carter is very underrated as a run stopper. Since his first season here, he has gradually become an all around end. I think because of his size its easy to say that he gets pushed around but I just havent seen that happen on a consistent basis since his first year here.

Haven't we learned anything from Antonio Pierce, and Ryan Clark we need to start keeping our guy's instead of training them for other teams.

re: Update: Evans Signs with Niners

This is a deal the Skins should be able to get done. The contract amount and the length of the contract are reasonable, Evans gets to start (I assume) and he wouldn't need to move across the country and start over with a new team to do it, and the Skins-friendly Drew Rosenhaus is his agent. On the surface, this looks good for the Skins.

re: Update: Evans Signs with Niners

Yea I think he should resign. Now that Taylor is gone, Evans is pretty much guaranteed to be the starter and he's not asking for much money, so the Redskins should definitely get this done.

Redskins Outsider shows that we are interested in Daniels too.

I like Evans and Daniels because both can play inside and out.

Sounds like Haynesworth can play some DE. He is the best at whatever he plays. DT, DE, K, P, beer vendor etc.

Paintrain 03-04-2009 02:39 PM

re: Update: Evans Signs with Niners

For a moderate deal like that and a need at starting DE I'm good with Evans returning. There's talk of Daniels returning too? I'm not really as sold on him. 36, coming off a major injury, seemingly ALWAYS hurt, what's the draw? To bring back him, Kendall and/or Washington just re-ages us and doesn't really make much sense.

I'd be fine with an Evans pick up and a Orapko or Malaugua draft pick. Not ignoring OT but if we can get 4 young playmakers (Haynesworth, Hall, Landry, '09 draft pick) on one side of the ball that can take us a long ways.

Coaches have certain players that they want with them all the time. Daniels is that guy for Blache. But at 36 an coming off major knee surgery, maybe someone should overrule and say let's move on.

Kind of like Buges and Jansen.

Who knows, they may just have the lines of communication open since Evans is a maybe.

I am being lazy but how many d-lineman do they usually carry?
LOL i didn't see this before i posted... did u change your mind or just didn't want to overpay for Evans?
My assumption (an incorrect assumption) was 1) that Evans was going to get a contract similar to the one Antonio Smith got with Houston, 2) San Francisco was going to pay him like that because they see him (incorrectly) as a nice 3-4 end, and 3) We'd be fools to match that offer.

Evans is no less mediocre now than he was yesterday, but if the going rate is 2/4, then holy crap why would we not match? In football terms, that's a half step above free.

That's where i would draw the line. I don't feel as an organization you should make guarantees regarding starting, being rotated in, or flat out sitting the bench. We pay you to do what we tell you to do, baring in mind all of the restrictions in place provided by the player's association.

Here's why in an example: We draft a young guy that really just blossoms by week 4. The coaches are going to feel obligated to continue to start Demetric because of his contract. Furthermore, most coaches try to instill a sense of competitiveness for all of the starting positions. It's good for morale, and it encourages effort.

I think it's flat out stupid to guarantee ANYONE a starting job in their contract.

Dirtbag59 03-04-2009 03:18 PM

re: Update: Evans Signs with Niners

Demetric Evans = Ryan Clark in 2005 and this time I wouldn't count on a guy like Laron Landry falling to us to replace him. Then again good left ends are about as easy to find as safetys so it's not like we can't find anyone. Still would be nice to see if we could get Michael Johnson out of Georgia Tech in a trade down, assuming of course that he has the size to play LE, as we don't want another Jason Taylor type deal where we put a RE at LE.

I agree wholeheartedly. 2M a year is a bargain and the fact that it would only be a two year deal almost makes this a no-brainer. Since, as a practical matter, two year deals are essentially one year deals where the team has the option for the 2nd year... so the contract benefits the skins greatly. it also benefits Evans greatly because - if he does well with haynesworth by his side, he could easily negotiate a more lucrative contract extension with us in the offseason.

This is a deal that needs to get done. The skins may have actually been wise to not offer Evans a deal and let him test the market. its certainly brought down his price. This is a case where i'm happy to admit i was wrong.

Daniels and Evans should both come back. They are good on this team and it's not like they haven't played well for us before. They know the scheme and are good stop gaps for a year or two.
