I don't think people realize how deeply racism/bigotry is still entrenched in the conservative movement. Even today as stalwarts such as Paul Weyrich admit SC cases like Green vs Connelly (decided private schools that banned all non-whites were ineligible for tax-exempt status) unified conservatives far more than oft cited Roe v Wade people still tend to ignore reality. Nowhere is this more clear than in western conservatives - very hard to find a conservative in this part of the country who does not hold very strong prejudice against minorities.

Here's a shovel white stuffed shirt conservatives... you just keep digging. As a republican I'm not shocked, and the amount of emails with racial undertones and scare tactics I received from republican people i know really appalled me during this campaign.

I am a minority and happen to be conservative. Oh yeah I also happen to be a public educator and a female. It is sad that there are conservatives who are close minded, but I have also also met and witnessed liberals who are just as close minded and at times extremely hateful.

Joke ay? Weak! I remember not too long ago there was talk of an appalling Michelle Obama "whittey" video where she's ranting in some anti-white diatribe. Leave the jokes to comedian especially if you look like this guy and suffer from intelligence deficiency, m'kay. If I am a Republican I would be celebrating that this moron isn't going to head my party out of the wildernesss.

I'm def a liberal hater... I hate trickle-down economics, health care run by corporate accountants and lawyers in Armani suits, and the military-industrial complex ;)

Ultimately I think we're all somewhat a product of our upbringing and experiences. Had I not been raised in the 80's and early 90's by a family who constantly made us feel scared about the anti-Christs Gorbachev, Clinton and Kofi I would probably take modern conservatism more seriously... well at least up until W. He is the gamechanger of 21st century America. LBJ knew he lost the south for at least a generation w/ the Civil Rights Acts: W lost a whole generation more or less just from his presidency.

If it were Joe Schmoe, it wouldn't be newsworthy. However, it's a guy who might just become the leader of the Republican party. If an African American politician of similar prominence circulated a CD with a track entitled, "Kill whitey," it would be newsworthy and rightly so.

Anyone who believes that racism is not alive and well in this country, is a fool. If you are foolhardy enough to think that the practice of racism is limited to ANY specific race and NOT practiced by all colors......to some degree, you are part of the disease..........NOT the cure.

Oh come on, this is not the same as Chris Rock making fun of how white people drive. More than anything, this reconfirms what a lot of us have known for a long time - Republicans aren't funny!

And any time they try to be, it usually ends up blowing up in their faces. So I guess in that regard they are pretty funny.

Never really thought of that but man you're right. Even my conservative friends/family can laugh part of the time at Bill Maher's sense of humor. There's no equivalent on the right. And Matty called it on the right's attempts to be funny always blowing up. I'll never forget the gruesome video of Lush Bimbaugh trying to make some "joke" about Michael J. Fox where Lush is writhing all over the place in his studio chair. Conservatives from coast to coast defended him like it was somehow done in good humor! Disgusting.

I would love to see Steele as head of the GOP. There are minorities out there who are Republicans and influential in the party. I hope to see more.

The GOP has lost its way its last few years, and has gotten away from its core values. While there were many things I did not like about W, I do think in 20 to 30 years he will be viewed as a decent president. That is if the media ever gives him a fair shake.

No one but you know how these things go, they take a life of their own and stories get twisted and shit gets made up. The story originated from a liberal caller to a radio station and this story which were all the rage on drudge and wingnut blogs a while back. i think its exactly the same, only difference is chris rock gets paid for it. the only reason people are upset is because it was a white guy who has a seat in the republican party. if it would have been a skit on SnL most people would find it funny.

Well that's the thing Wolf, people aren't in the mood for satire from politicians. Especially Republicans. This is even coming from their own party members. They want answers and leadership. But you're right, had this been SNL it wouldn't be a problem. I will say this about comparing Chip's actions to SNL - SNL is equal opportunity. They slam Republicans, Democrats, black, white, female, whatever. S

The thing is the country just finished with a bitterly faught election, from both sides, and most Americans want to move forward. It probably doesn't help that Barack's ratings are through the roof either.

Re: "Barack the Magic Negro"

I don't think they get it. Me calling Bush a dumb peckerwood is not the same as Howard Dean calling him a dumb peckerwood. This isn't about racism either, it's about judgment in light of the perception people have about your party, a party you're aspiring to lead. No one gives a shit about the song or its performer. What they care about is the endorsement of it by someone wanting to lead the RNC.

Because I love history all of this reminds me of Bess Truman poor judgment in light of D.A.R. refusal to allow Hazel Scott to perform at the Constitution Hall because she was black. After she got wind of the story Mrs. Truman issued a press release in the morning condemning D.A.R's refusal to allow Mrs. Scott to perform and in the afternoon attended a tea party held by D.A.R. in her honor.

Contrast Bess Truman's action with that of Eleanor Roosevelt who resigned her D.A.R. membership when Marian Anderson's request to perform at Constitutional Hall was denied. Mrs. Roosevelt later persuaded interior secretary Harold Ickes to arrange for an outdoor concert for Mrs. Anderson at the steps of Lincoln Memorial.

The moral of the story is that judgment and class knows no race, color or creed.

Some political analysts are speculating that the CD may actually help Saltsman become the next chairman of the RNC. Moreover, current Chairman Michael Duncan is actually catching flak for condemning Saltsman's promotion of the song. And the GOP wonders why it got its ass spanked in 2008?

Re: "Barack the Magic Negro"

First off this song came from a guy who wrote it for Rush. I listen to his show about 4 hours a year and happened to hear this part of his show back in 2007. This song was joking on the LA Times article (I think it was that paper) and directed at them and not Obama. If you notice CNN gave links to some things in this story but did not give a link to the article which would put this song in better context. Now, I do think it was dumb for this guy to even produce the CD because of how it would be perceived by the public. I don't know the guy so I'm not going to judge him by what might have been a bad humor.

Which is pretty much the point. If you're a politician, you need to keep your focus on... Oh yeah... Politics!

Save the comedic relief for the comedians.

Although the Barack song was in poor taste, I guess I'm so desensitized, I kinda snickered when I saw the title to this thread.

I mean I think you can make fun of different races as long as you can do so with tact and actually be funny. It's a thin line between making witty racial commentary and coming off as racist. I've seen white comedians make jokes about black people and I'm not offended cause that shit is actually funny. Asian comedians tend to do it a lot too.

And come on, black comedians cap on the black race all the time probably MORE than any other race. Remember Chris Rock's set about the difference between black people and the N-word?

It should be noted that the phrase "The Magic Negro" originated in an opinion piece in the LA Times by David Ehrenstein back in March of 2007.

So it wasn't the Republicans who came up with the term. The guy who writes parodies for the Rush Limbaugh show simply took the term Ehrenstein came up with made a stupid song out of it.

I keep hearing this line of thought...we're just creating a parody based on presumably liberal not so racist L.A. Times writer. This fact alone makes the whole thing inoffensive. If anything we should all get together, have a sing-along and a laugh. People are putting too much stock in what the term "Magic Negro" means, the lyrics of the song, and Rush "Fountain of Wisdom" Limbaugh.
