When will the rookie WR's make an impact?

Just a question...anybody hear if kelly was supposed to play? Are we prepping Thomas for punt returns? Any info at all on these two "prize" aquisitions

Re: When will the rookie WR's make an impact?

They're not going to be making many contributions in the near future. Kelly is still hampered by an injury and is, at best, our #4 WR. Thomas is very raw and, when Kelly is healthy, probably our #5 WR. Davis is the #3 TE and I don't see him producing a lot, especially since #2 TE Yoder has yet to make significant contributions. All three picks seem promising, but they are not going to produce the stats in 2008 that people thought they would (barring injury to the super-productive duo of Moss and Cooley).

really? you think that kelly despite his lack of practices is still ahead of devin thomas? He has show flashes here and there.

Re: When will the rookie WR's make an impact?

They all look promising, and it is a BLESSING to not have to play, and put our francise on them until ready.
Nice to Yoder get some action

Re: When will the rookie WR's make an impact?

I think if they are in the game and getting a lot of balls, then that is bad news for us. Meaning Moss and ARE are either hurt or playing bad.

Sure they will get more at them towards the end of the season, but to me it's a non-issue. As long as we are winning, and our starters are not getting shutdown, no need to put rookies in an extremely tough situation. Best to let them get a few plays, and learn.

Re: When will the rookie WR's make an impact?

i still think it would be nice to have the ability to run a 5 wr set if needed and have the flexibility. I love our WRs..moss are and thrash are all awesome...but i would love to see the new guys size become a factor in the red zone

I'm not sure where Kelly would be on the depth chart if he were healthy. Not to get too technical, but I said he is "at best" the #4 WR and he would probably beat Thomas for that spot. I say that simply because Kelly is much better at running routes than Thomas. Supposedly, Thomas is developing nicely as a deep threat, but you don't go deep a dozen times per game in the WCO and even if you do, Moss is going to get 90% of those receptions.

Re: When will the rookie WR's make an impact?

I think it's also a good thing to not have to relay on them bringing anythign this first year. And if we continue to have secuss its just gonna make them want to work harder and really take some equity in our team.

One thing I like about Thomas is that when he is on the field (kickoff coverage) he is looking like he is having some real fun. He has definitly been humbled a little bit and I think now he really wants it and wants to prove himself.

Re: When will the rookie WR's make an impact?

My prediction is this weekend. The Eagles will try to contain our primary receivers, which will open the door for Zorn to throw them a curve ball with eiither or both of our rookie WR's.

santana will need to be doubled, thatcould lead to thomas running free if he gets his routes down

Give them some time. There's no big rush considering the way Moss and ARE are playing.

Moss, ARE, Cooley, Thrash, and Portis are all going to have more receptions than Thomas. So I'd be surprised if Thomas had 300 yards this season, unless someone is injured or JC throws for 6,000 yards.

Re: When will the rookie WR's make an impact?

Does anyone know whether Kelly practiced yesterday? That would be a big first step to getting back on the field. Let's also not forget about Fred Davis. I'd love to see him in with Cooley at the same time - then you cannot double Cooley underneath. This offense could get downright scary when we get all of the young weapons healthy and up to speed.

The kid from Philly, Jackson, is a play maker. Where was he on the draft board? Why didn't the Skins consider him rather than the two pokes we got?

I suppose the logic was that we already had a guy like Jackson in Santana Moss. I hated the Davis pick at first, but it grew on me when I saw the guy's athletic ability during the preseason. I hope that all of our rookie receivers make an impact soon.

yeah, we already have a "desean jackson" that's why. Man, after all the clamoring around here for some "tall" receivers, we go out and get two and people wonder why we didn't take the little guy. LOL.

Could you have imagined the reaction to taking Jackson when all we've heard the past few years is how we need a big WR?!

Gotta love hindsight.

Re: When will the rookie WR's make an impact?

Thomas is on the field A LOT already, but he doesn't yet have Campbell's trust. They like his blocking ability on the outside and will try to run him vertical behind the defense.

However, a lot of the Redskins passing game is three step drops and getting the ball out quickly to a player that Campbell decided on presnap. Because of the position Santana Moss plays in the offense, he is often going to be Campbell's presnap read. Devin Thomas doesn't yet have Campbell's trust since he's not usually where Campbell wants him.

The 2-3 plays Malcolm Kelly has actually been in on, it seems like Campbell does trust him a bit more. However, he's not doing a whole lot of good on the inactive list every week.

I want to see more Fred Davis.

GTripp0012 10-02-2008 01:42 PM

Re: When will the rookie WR's make an impact?

Malcolm Kelly being inactive these last two weeks meant no empty backfield packages for Campbell. Right now, that's his role on the team, 4th WR.

RMSkins 10-02-2008 01:47 PM

Re: When will the rookie WR's make an impact?

We need to worry about Malcolm Kelly getting healthy before we can worry about him producing. His injury situation is starting to become ridiculous. Devin Thomas is on the field a lot, but it doesn't seem like Zorn and Campbell feel comfortable throwing him the ball yet. I have seen a few plays where Thomas is wide open and Campbell doesn't even look at him. I think the coaches need to find a way to get Davis on the field more. He hasn't had very many opportunities.

MTK 10-02-2008 02:17 PM

Re: When will the rookie WR's make an impact?

Thomas needs to earn the trust of JC, when he does that he will get his fair share of looks. Kelly just needs to get on the damn field.

Re: When will the rookie WR's make an impact?

I think right now we are in a great situation. With Tana, ARE, and Cooley playing the way they are, we have the luxury of allowing these guys to keep learning the system while we win games. Devin Thomas seems to be giving good effort and should become a great deep threat. I have visions of him and Tana going deep with Cooley and ARE (or Davis) going medium routes and Portis coming out of the backfield on a short route. I was most impressed with Kelly early on and it sounded like Jason was high on him too. I just hope he's not injury prone because this guy could come close to making this "O" unstoppable. I think Davis will work his way in more often as Zorn works more plays into the "O". Not a bad situation any way you look at it. Like I've said before, when these guys start contributing and this offense becomes second nature to our starters... WATCH THE F#*K OUT! .....Oh yeah, and Jason has only started 4 games in this system and has the best rating of his pro life.

Agreed, I've said that too. According to the experts we don't have the weapons that the Cowboys, Giants, Eagles have, that's BS!! When these guys start producing and my feeling is that it will be sooner than later, then you better have your defense ready to play us. The key to all this is our OL needs to keep doing the job they've done so far in protection.

Hopefully they do start producing, but until then they can't be considered weapons. Receivers have a much harder time making it in the NFL which is why teams tend to shy away from them in the top rounds. How many top picks have we wasted at this position in the past? These guys haven't done anything yet to prove they will pan out. Luckily Moss, ARE, Cooley and Portis have picked it up and JC seems to be settling in and making smart decisions.

yeah, I really feel we need to address the oline in the draft next year (1-3) primarily at Center and Guard, which luckily usually come in round 3 and later. We seem to be set at the skill positions on Offense for the foreseeable future (maybe we could look for a complimentary back for portis...).

Re: When will the rookie WR's make an impact?

Thomas will have an impact sometime this year. As GTripp said he's already playing. He just needs to get his feet wet and earn JC's trust. Kelly can't even practice so I'm not sure if we'll see much of this guy until next year. And Davis hasn't even been active. But as long as the vets are playing at a high level we don't need these guys quite yet.

Re: When will the rookie WR's make an impact?

A lot of comments about trust, which is probably true, but also, if my belief in Zorn is well founded why not hold back some of what you want to do (Thomas for example) until people start stopping what you are doing. I can think of alot of games in the second half of the season where defenses will still trying to be figuring out Zorn's tendencies. With Kelly, if he needs time to heal, then thankfully we seem to be able to afford it (knock on wood) .
This question seems alot more appropriate only if our goto guys are struggling or worse injured.

I've been wondering were they are, but thankfully our starters Moss, Are and Cooley are doing fine so it allows are rookies to come along slowly and learn the play book probably (fingers crossed) their time will come.

I agree thou if there is a stud OL guy available I would take him since you can always use them with all the injuries and our line is old. I think we need to address the defensive line. With how our secondary is playing, if we had a dominant front line this defense would rock.

I still think it will not be until towards the end of next season unfortunately before we have any feeling on how our top 3 picks pan out.

Dline dline dline...how many years do we have to get dlinemen??? We def could use a tackle to help but i dont think its a necessity. I think our thinnest position right now is at lb...and im going to go out on a limb here and saiy it mght be time for betts to be replaced by a younger change of pace back..we can only go with the same 3 back set for so long

They are not great picks until they become great players on an NFL regular season game field. Let's not start calling any player great until they show it in a regular season game. Not in a practice, remember Tayor Jacobs greatest practice player ever, according to Champ Bailey. Or in a preseason game like Mike Oliphant, great pre season player.

Safety Horton is deserving of praise, he has produce. Cerratto and company finally produced a late round pick that can play. One player. Let's not go over board either.

Ah how many years have we used a top pick on dline? Guess I missed those drafts. I do know we have drafted alot of receivers thou and that has panned out nicely for us.

Well Kelly won't be playing this week either..

Malcolm Kelly took part in the full workout and has recovered from his sprained ankle, but Zorn said the rookie receiver needs more practice and will be among the inactive players Sunday.

Re: When will the rookie WR's make an impact?

I am going to go out on a limb here. But I see Thomas making some big plays in the game. Maybe even scoring a touchdown. Because the Eagles are going to be focusing on Moss. Not saying how much he will play. But I see them fitting him into the game plan for a few plays to stretch the field or maybe a reverse. I just have this feeling someone other than Moss is going to have a good game at WR either ARE or Thomas. I also think they may play Davis on a few situational plays. Just because the eagles arent game planning for them.

I also hope that Selelrs get the opportunity to make a few catches and get a few runs. Not many but enough to make a few first downs and to beat up the eagle lbs and secondary a little bit. But overall I see Cooley having a big game and even with Eagles run defense I think Portis will have another 100 yard game. Also JC running for a few first downs.

We better pick up atleast 2 D-lineman next year. In the early rounds or atleast draft two mid round D-lineman and pick up a fairly young player that has alot of potential and is budding this year. Not an old dried up one that hasn't done anything in 4 years. Like we have been accustomed to doing. I hope we pick up some D-line man badly!!!! That should be the first and second pick. BUt we need D-Lineman and O-line overall and maybe a linebacker.
