Schweigert released...

Wow. Stuart Schweigert must have made quite an impression in the game film from last night. Apparently, he was badly out of position on one of the Colt touchdowns. Surprising for a guy with 42 starts.

i'm not surprised. a rookie 7th round draft pick cant be outplaying u like that.

Re: Schweigert released...

No way. I mean I know he struggled last night but released? Wow, I guess that makes my boy Doughty the unquestioned starter but I guess that Horton made quite an impression last night. Plus they might have been looking to carrry more players at other positions like DE and CB after strong performances from Richardson and Jackson.

Also did Horton play FS last night? I was under the impression that he was being used at SS but I didn't really pay attention. Didn't help that the camera angle was really close but I think that was a product of playing in such a small stadium.

Do you have a confirmed source? I can't find it anywhere on espn.com, nfl.com, or redskns.com. Share the link.

Re: Schweigert released...

It's on the ticker at the bottom of the screen on NFLN. Also another ticker on there said we released Danny Verdun-Wheeler and we signed Pete Schmitt and another guy.

As for Stuart, too bad. I wasn't expecting him to be anything more than depth anyways, idk where everybody was getting this whole "he expects to compete for the starting job" idea anyway. I know he had a lot of starts but in Oakland he wasn't that impressive of a player anyway.

I'm curious to see Kareem Moore in action, I want him to make an impact and earn a roster spot this season.

Re: Schweigert released...

I apologize, just saw the redskins insider link...WOW! Surprising, but not surprising. I mean if the Raiders cut him last year...he couldn't have been that good! Plus, I think they really like Horton and Moore. Let's just hope that LaRon does have a serious injury this year because we would be really thin at safety.

Re: Schweigert released...

My guess is that he wasn't cut just because he had a bad game.

mmil12 08-04-2008 07:35 PM

Re: Schweigert released...

I agree 100%. For them to cut him after the first preseason game...there was definitely something behind the scenes.

Of course...he CAN'T get hurt....it would kill the secondary.

They must see something in Horton and Moore that put Schweigert on the outs, but i think the's more to this story than the redskins are letting out.

Ruhskins 08-04-2008 09:16 PM

Re: Schweigert released...

Wow, a bit surprised about that...although, wasn't Schweigert supposed to be Landry's back up, and not competing with Doughty? I hope Horton continues to develop and would like to see what Kareem Moore has to show.

I guess better to just cut bait now, but still that's a bit surprising. My "surprise" pick from April of Horton backing up Landry/Doughty at Safety once the regular season rolls around is looking more possible.

Matt Sinclair was pretty solid last night, solid enough I guess for Verdun-Wheeler to get cut. Still, why not hold onto as many LBs as possible during camp? I think they're pretty happy with Fincher as well though

Okay, tell me if I'm way off base with this, but...

They had Horton line up for two safety blitzes last night. Since the preseason games are auditions for rookies, do you think it's possible somebody on the coaching staff really likes Horton and put him in a special position to make a name for himself? Or are they simply experimenting with safety blitzes and somebody else will have a couple of cracks at the QB next week?

I don't think it has much to do with Horton really. I think they are both experimenting and putting rookies/young players in positiion to make plays to see if they actually will.

He could have easily missed the QB on those two blitzes...plus he really had to work to get down that lineman the Colts had playing at QB. So possibly, but in the end Horton had to make those plays, and he had an impact in both (a sack, and a QB hurry)

I bet Vernon Fox is happy. I was cheering for SS; so sad. At least he'll have an opportunity to latch onto another team.

Re: Schweigert released...

Wow! I never saw this coming. Schweigert looked really bad last night, but I can't help but think that we jumped the gun alittle bit on this one. It's not like we replaced Schweigert with someone better, we replaced him with Patrick Ghee, a guy we cut earlier this season. If this means that Horton and Moore are impressing and are going to make the team than I am all for it, but if not it's strange that we would release a vet at a position that we have very little depth at. I can't help but to think that there was something going on behind the scenes with Schweigert that they aren't letting get out.

Relax with the conspiracy theories -- it's just Stewart Schweigert.

I'd say there is nothing going on behind the scenes, which is exactly why Schweigert was cut -- he stunk last night, and he's probably stunk in practice too. So, the coaches cut him.

You said it. It wasn't like we cut Chris Samuels or someone. The guy was..well, another safety who happened to be competing with a very hungry kid named Horton. Horton makes this team.

Let me throw this out there right now. This year is possibly Blache's last season. I wonder if Dwayne Walker will leave UCLA and come back to the Skins as the new D Coordinator. Just a thought.

i don't think he'd come back for a DC gig. he's happy with where he's at.

a GREAT coach though, no doubt.

It's funny, yesterday morning on 980, B-Mitch was like, "Scweigert WILL be starting by the end of the season."

Then they cut him.

Re: Schweigert released...

I'm not suprised...anyone who saw that first INDY TD pass would say...What the heck was that?
Both the safety and CB were way out of position....check the game thread...we all saw that.
The safety was Sweigart and the CB was Tryon...Tryon actually played worse...but he has an excuse....hes a rookie playing his first game on an island.
Sweigart was the vet saftey that was supposed to cover for him.
For a vet to be suckered that badly just shows that the guy was totally lost...and the scary part was, he was playing coverage....his supposed strength.
If that's his strength, I'd hate to see him in run support.

Horton clearly had the best game of any defender...
My only concern would be if it was just a one game thing....
The Skins wouldn't cut a vet unless Horton was doing that on the practice field as well though....I am glad for Horton.

Regarding the LBs....I think they may cut more of em and get a vet or 2 as backups unless they improve next game
They struggled

I thought I heard somewhere that Schweigert had been struggling in camp. Either way not a huge deal. Good news for the younger guys.
