It's belated if it is. |

Lol, damnit don't use big words that make me go to dictionary.com |
Re: Jerome Mathis signed
Wow. This guy is a douchebag. We waited all this time to sign someone and we sign him?
|
Re: Jerome Mathis signed
James Hardy looks like a chior boy compared to this guy.
|
Re: Jerome Mathis signed
The timing is kind of funny too...hasn't JLC from the Post said that the Skins have been releasing unflattering team related info on FRI and SAT nights because they know that everyone is out on the town and won't pay attention.
Wonder if this is one of those aptly timed releases. |
Re: Jerome Mathis signed
Wow guess we see who is replacing Reche
|
Re: Jerome Mathis signed
On a positive note, I heard he was a beast punt/kick returner.

Well I wonder where does that put Rock on special teams? |
Re: Jerome Mathis signed
Vinny Cerato: So what can you tell me about your domestic dispute where you allegedly choked your pregnant girlfriend?
Jerome Mathis: I ran a 4.10 on my pro day. Vinny Cerato: Welcome to the Redskins Jerome |
Re: Jerome Mathis signed
I'm a little surprised at this move. He hasn't been productive at all at the WR position, good on KR, but isn't that why we just re-signed Rock? And the character issues that he brings along are all very concerning.
I'll take a wait and see approach, but this move doesn't excite me at all. Redskins Sign WR Mathis |
Re: Jerome Mathis signed
I bet he's released by training camp

I hope you're right. |
Re: Jerome Mathis signed
I hope we use him on reverses/fake reverses on special teams, hopefully he can get around his past troubles and stay healthy.
|
Re: Jerome Mathis signed
guy cant stay healthy but he's got speed to burn, with him and Rock back on kickoffs they could be a hell of a tandem
|
Re: Jerome Mathis signed
local guy as well, from petersburg and went to hampton. im not opposed to this pickup
|
Re: Jerome Mathis signed
Did it ever occur to anyone that maybe he was brought in to takeover on punts so Randle El can focus all his attention on offense.
|
Did it ever occur to anyone that maybe he was brought in to takeover on punts so Randle El can focus all his attention on offense.
I thought that might be a reason, but why would we give a guy 30 mil to just be on offense, wasn't one of the reasons we signed him, was to have a punt return specialist. |
Re: Jerome Mathis signed
Randle El has turned into a pretty good reciever and he hasn't been very effective on punts but still this signing pisses me off. People are turning their back just because he has 4.10 40 speed. I thought the Redskins were better then this.
***Censored***** Basically I thought Dan Snyder would have learned a thing or two from Gibbs about character. |
Re: Jerome Mathis signed
i think he will be a good returner and he wont be 3rd string we will still draft a WR
|
Re: Jerome Mathis signed
we gave HIM 30 million dollars?????? NO WAY
|
Re: Jerome Mathis signed
hmm another short WR, maybe they signed him to ease the concerns of WR depth b/c Caldwell didn't sign?

Well he can be the Chad Johnson of the Skins. Woot? |
Re: Jerome Mathis signed
From JLC:
The Redskins have ended their search for a PR rep and have decided to hire Shirely Phelps. Shirley Phelps is best known for creating the websites God Hates America and www.godhatesthenorthwestdistrictoflondonnexttothenewpubthatwasbuildonmainstreet.com |
Re: Jerome Mathis signed
Unusual signing. Definitely unexpected, but I think if Mathis can stay healthy he is an upgrade over Rock. Rock is a good KR, but he doesn't have break away speed and that is where I think Mathis trumps Rock. It will be interesting to see how this turns out.

Re: Jerome Mathis signed
First post; Careful on the charges. Though all of us hate violence toward weaker individuals, as a defense attorney my knowledge of these cases are they are usually overblown. As one 60 year old female attorney said to me. "If this law was applied as is to everyone, both me and my husband would both be in prison." I can go into a dissertation on the problems of false data on these reports, but will not bore you. If the money is as reported it seems like his role will be more than just a returner. Hey, and still a great draft in front of us.

Re: Jerome Mathis signed
I guess ignorance is bliss. Oh well, here are the facts on Jerome Mathis.
Texans Returner Jerome Mathis Charged With Choking Pregnant Girlfriend - FanHouse - AOL Sports Blog
"Mathis has already been in the Texans doghouse for maturity issues. After a breakout season where he was All Pro as a returner, he injured his hands riding a motorcycle. In his rookie season, he got into a fistfight with TE Marcellus Rivers on the team bus. After 2005, he spent the most of the next two season on IR with various leg problems."
The Facts
When officers arrived at the home late Friday, they saw a red mark on Smith’s neck just below her jawbone, Foreman said. Smith reported no other injuries but was “worrying about her unborn baby,” Foreman said. She refused to be taken to a hospital and declined to press charges.
So allegations of his domestic dispute aside, the fact that he got into a fist fight with his own teamate should've been enough to discourage the Redskin's from signing this guy. God, how many times do I have to bring up Jeremy Stevens? In all honesty, the number of fans looking the other way, just because he was a pro-bowl kick returner worries me. |

According to PFT I was on the right track with the release of the Mathis signing being on FRI night so as to have it go unnoticed. I don't think it matters that much anyway because he will more than likely not make it past training camp due to his injury riddled past. |

Doesn't the league prevent teams from releasing injured players, (for example Shaun Alexander). |

I believe with contracts like these they are contingent upon him making the final roster. Whatever signing bonus agreed upon would be his to keep, more than likely a small amount, and we could cut him with no ill effect on the cap. The deal more than likely is bottom rate since he was out basically the last two years with injuries. He'll be lucky to make it out of camp healthy. Complete speculation on my part of course. |
Re: Jerome Mathis signed
Well, was his girlfriend acting up? You have to look at both sides of the story.
But seriously, if someone does something wrong, is that person to never be allowed to redeem himself? That is unforgiving and harsh. It was from an earlier post, we gave Randle El 30 million. Just a mix up. |
Re: Jerome Mathis signed
A good pick up if you ask me. His maturity issues dont bother me. In fact maturity issues have never bothered me.
You have to ask yourselves one thing: Is this guy going to help us win games or not? I believe the best people to make that call are the guys in charge, and im not talking about danny. Guy was never charged for anything with his girlfriend, so that should be done with. He also punched a Teammate, ok, wow, big deal. We are talking about football players, not school teachers. |
Re: Jerome Mathis signed
Anyone think this spells the end for Thrash? I think it might. One of Thrash's pluses is that he can return some kicks. And Gibbs was always the one who loved Thrash so much - makes me wonder if Vinny feels the same way.
Now I don't know if Mathis can cover on teams as well as Thrash could, so that's a question mark. But if he can, I can definitely see Thrash being expendable. |
Re: Jerome Mathis signed
I hope this is just a move to bring in some competition at the WR & PR positions, and he doesn't make the final roster.

Those three things are I think good reasons to keep him. Mathis is not a big dude 5'11 191, and injured a ton last season, only played 5 games. I'm not sure even if we kept him that he would be tackling anyone on special teams. |
Re: Jerome Mathis signed
Sketchy pickup. I don't like it mainly due to his issues off the field. The guy sounds like a real loser.
|
Re: Jerome Mathis signed
If the front office wanted to give the media and fans some excitement in an otherwise dull offseason, mission accomplished.
This is definitely a head scratcher. Does Mathis really fill a hole in the Skins' roster? Punt returner, maybe.... All this is even more mysterious given his off-field record. I'm eager to have Zorn and/or Cerrato weigh in on this acquisition. |
