Julius Peppers, now thats worth breaking the bank!

It has been reported that the Denver Broncos are interested in the services of Peppers and are pursuing a possible trade with Carolina for this stud DE. I don’t know about any of you guys but to me there are a few players that I feel willing to give up the farm on, and he happens to be one of them.

I don’t like to start a post on, "oh lets grab this guy", but come on, Peppers and Carter on each end??? So, I just figured I would throw this out there since there doesn’t seem to be a whole bunch of news breaking right now, and see what you think.

Tell me what you think it would take, and do you think if these rumblings get over to Mr and Mrs. Snyderato, they would try and become a player. I would be willing to give up quite a bit to get him in maroon and black!

At 27 this boy has many years left in the tank. Here's the link.

Re: Julius Peppers, now thats worth breaking the bank!

I'd be a little hesitant to break the bank on him. He had a down year in 2007 and some reports say for whatever reason he lacked the explosiveness he showed in prior years. Let Denver give him the big bucks.

Re: Julius Peppers, now thats worth breaking the bank!

trust me, I live in charlotte and this guy is NOT worth throwing tons of money after. He played absolutely horrible last year. I know that is only one year, but you can't give a guy that kind of money when he is coming off the kind of year he had. He doesn't play the run all that great. He wants to get paid like a star, but does not act like one. He is not a locker room guy, never talks, never takes charge. He was the joke of Charlotte all last year. I unfortunately had to watch some of those games, and he just basically got stood up every snap. no penatration, no rush, he didn't do squat.

stay away from him.

I really feel that Peppers needs a change of scenery. How many Dlinemen can the Broncos fit on their roster.

I don't know if I'd break the bank, but I'd definitely make a call to Carolina and see what it would take compensation wise. I think I'd offer a 3rd and a late round pick and hold steady there. Considering DHall went for a 2nd.

Re: Julius Peppers, now thats worth breaking the bank!

I think the whole team had a bad year last year, and that a player of his magnitude, given his age, will rebound tremendously with a fresh start in a new jersey. I can definitely see why some may be hesitant on this but feel he has 5+ great years in the tank and would be a great bolster to our team, although I understand the likelihood of the new look GM offers little chance for this to happen.

He would be nice to have, but he also said that he wants to become the highest paid defensive player in the NFL, so I'm gonna have to pass.

I don't know about many years left in the tank, but he would be worth at least a 4 year contract probably making Dwight Freeney money. To top it all of we would have to give up a high day 1 and a high day 2 pick. Honestly, after all of that I would rather have an offensive weapon like CJ. Our pass rush isn't that bad, but our passing game was woefull.

I agree with you completely and would make the call at least and due your due diligence on this guy. I may have been a little over the top on my "break the bank" statement but I think you all know where I am going, something fair and at market value.

defintely worth looking into. sometimes good players lose motivation when their teams sucks. i'd bet his performance this past year was an aberration. with carter on the opposite end and maybe a hotshot 1st round pick in the middle, our front 4 could be playing at a whole new level next year. i think peppers is an intriguing prospect.

HOWEVER, what would we have to lose for him? i don't mid taking his contract and coughing up a second rounder, personally.

wasn't he quoted last year saying something to the effect "I don't love football?"

Freeney got a 6 year $72 million dollar contract with a $30 million signing bonus ... and a high day one pick is 1st or 2nd round (only two rounds on day one this year) and high day 2 is 3rd or 4th. I'm just clarifying the type of numbers you are throwing around when you make a statement like that.

Re: Julius Peppers, now thats worth breaking the bank!

we all the know that, in our system, the front 4 must be able to apply consistent pressure. we simply must improve in that department. immediately. lack of pressure was the single biggest factor in our humiliation at new england this past year.

i recall one of the commentators saying in the 4th quarter, "look at tom brady on the sideline... he's not even sweating!"

pass rushers and receivers (which we are also looking for) generally take a few years to get comfortable to the point where they can truly be impactful. i do not believe we should (or will) try and chance both of these positions in the draft.

a trade is in the works.... it MUST be.

You are right and we haven’t had many good D-lines in the past 10 years and our success, or lack their of, shows that it isn’t a good recipe to being very productive making super bowl runs. We need pressure on the line, which will just make the rest of our D, which looks pretty good, even more successful.

I understand this is a pipe dream, but what else do we have going on right now?

yes when they play a team w/a qb that's got a tender ankle & they continue to call 7 step drops & long patterns, rather than 3 & 5 step drops w/shorter routes.

good d linemen are a valuable commodity in short supply, but I'm not sure how much peppers is worth. If he wants to be the highest paid d player, I'd let him go to wherever he can get that kind of cash.

On a side note, it doesn't appear the broncos have changed their personel philosophy at all. They've shelled out some big deals for fa's & trades out there.

The guy has one bad year on a really bad team and everyone wants to remove the talent level from the previous years in which we all could argue he was one of the most dominate forces in the game. Almost all great athletes have 1-2 bad years in them. At 27-28 this guy didn’t just forget how to play football, come on!

Also, it is to our advantage that he had a bad year as his stock, and contract negotiation powers have dropped slightly, otherwise Carolina wouldn’t be willing to deal him.

He might need a change of scenery. But in order to trade for him we're going to have to give up our first round pick and maybe another pick on top of that one. Plus he's probably going to want a new deal. So I ask you is it worth it? I say it 's just too risky.

We've already tried to FA route for several years and it never really works. I like the appoach we're taking this year and I hope we keep it up in the future.

Yet he apparently wants to be the highest paid defensive player in the league (or very close). As we all know by now, the problem with trading for players are that you end up with someone another team didn't want, presumably for some reason (I've heard some things about attitude and desire being an issue for Peppers in Carolina, but I'm not in the locker room); you give up picks that can turn into productive players (when the Skins trade picks people say 'why did they trade that pick', when they don't trade picks then we have threads saying 'why aren't they trading their picks'?); draft picks are cheaper than giving older players big contracts; if you miss on a 2nd round pick you can get rid of that player with pretty minimal cap implications, if you give Julius Peppers $30 million guaranteed and he doesn't work out you are in a bind.

Plus, just look at some 2nd and 3rd round picks in previous years. I know it is hard to fathom now that anyone outside of the top 10 on Mel Kiper's Big Board will ever be a productive player, but every year guys from these rounds turn into some of the better players in the NFL.

I'm sorry good players do not slack off because they are playing for a bad team and if thats the case with him then he needs to stay in NC. This thread is based off an article where someone saw him at a basketball game in Denver.

Okay so what your telling me is that Defensive Players are supposed to shine on bad teams, and that great athletes never have bad seasons and rebound? My opinion is that Defense in the NFL is a team sport and if your teammates aren’t playing well, your numbers will drop. They were middle of the pack last year but trying to support a 29th ranked O that couldn’t stay on the field.

I will clearly state that 95% of the time I have a draft driven opinion and I have been truly upset with the amount of free agents that have been brought onto the team over the past few years, and enjoy the new approach. It is apparent from the article that Peppers is being shopped and I don’t see why we wouldn’t "possibly" entertain the idea as the majority of us have stated clearly that DE is our biggest need. I wouldn’t be upset if we perused him and the price was wrong, but I would be mad if he ended up on a team for a crazy cheap price, i.e. Randy Moss last year.

I say we just leave our options open on this and see what they may want. I do understand being optimistic and pick/trade stingy as that’s my general rule of thumb.

They sure are looking good, possibly a good QB, or average play with little turnovers from Jackson, to making a run. I see them in the second round of the playoffs this year.

You think so? IMO it's not going to matter as long as they have no QB. Do you know if they were trying to trade for Sage Rosenfelds?

rypper11 03-18-2008 12:14 PM

Re: Julius Peppers, now thats worth breaking the bank!

I absolutely want him. He is not a leader or a self motivating player, but he is a dominant force. During the Pussycats heyday Minter pushed every player on that D to play harder. Losing Minter last year hurt him because he needs to be led and motivated. Coach Blache, Fletcher, Springs, Daniels and Washington won't let him slack. Ever. This would be the greatest signing ever!
I would absolutely trade at least two 2nd rounders and possibly add a 6 or 7 to it for him.
The question is, how do we afford him? I think he absolutely worth $7mil/yr. But how do we afford it?

Dirtyskin21 03-18-2008 12:21 PM

Re: Julius Peppers, now thats worth breaking the bank!

i'd rather keep the pick and hopefully we can land a stud in the lower rounds rounds.. Look at the studs we have landed in the 5th and 6th. Imagine the type of players we will be able to get with the 1st,2nd,and 2-3rd's. I dont think between the contract he's gonna want, and the picks we will have to give up would be worth it.

But if he was a FA, I would def say pull the trigger. A physical specimen like peppers will be a freak until he's 30 at least, last year he was just on a bad defense and they had NO team leaders and so his numbers and play sucked. You can't base one bad year on the rest of his career, especially when he has been AWESOME every season before.

Longtimefan 03-18-2008 12:28 PM

Re: Julius Peppers, now thats worth breaking the bank!

While JP has in previous years demonstrated the type of physical dominance most teams covet, it's not likely we'll be interested in offering the Panthers what they would want in trade.

Furthermore, neither would we be interested in paying the type contract he would be seeking for his services.

Look for the team to continue the approach you've witnessed since the beginning of FA. It's a nice thought, just not likely to happen.

Yeah, last I heard they offered a 3rd but the Texans were asking for a 2nd. They also reportedly offered a late round pick for Chris Simms, which the Bucs rejected. But that could be revisited too.

I look at the division and I think they have a great shot even with T. Jackson to take the division with a 9-7/10-6 record. I guess a lot will depend on just how good Aaron Rodgers will be with the Packers.

That’s how I feel about it, you don't forget how to play but with a little motivation, and a good locker room (which we have), he would reclaim his dominance in becoming the best DE in the league.

Re: Julius Peppers, now thats worth breaking the bank!

Nope. No way. Nyet. Nein.

I have entirely soured on the "trade for other teams players" route especially the "trade for other teams stars" route. If you look at our recent draft history (since 2004), we have hit on all our 1-3rd round picks (six picks, six starters) (jury is stll out on 2005's JC and Carlos).

Somewhere around 2004'ish, the FO starting getting some good hits and it seems, to me at least, that our drafting has actually improved. As such, I really am all about getting as many shots in the lottery as possible. For those who say, "you know what you're getting when you trade for an established player" You mean like Archuletta? LLoyd? Trung? John Hall? Chad Morton? Free agency and pro players are a crapshoot too. Is he going to adapt? Was he just looking for the payday? Was he a product of the system? etc.

I like our draft choices recently and hope we can continue to hit on the early rounders and find some gems in the later rounds. If so, then we will be built to win EVERY year not just for a particular year.

the guy was surrounded by leaders in the locker room in Carolina. John Fox is a defensive coach, who drafted him. Steve Smith, Vinny T, Morgan, Jenkins, all were there trying to get this guy to play hard, intense and he did nothing. Look, maybe a change of scenary will work, but to break the bank with a guy like him, coming off a horrible season, and basically was getting beat one on one every snap, i say no way.
Carolina stunk, but the defense was not horrible. it was decent. I believe it finished top 15?? I just so no. I live in Charlotte and hear the bad stuff every day during the season and I just dont want him on my team.

exactly, look how good we have been drafting players in the high rounds.. imagine what kind of studs we will be grabbing with the first 4 picks.

We have a 1st, a-2nd, 2-3rds,5th(not sure if we have 2 5ths or not),6th, and 2-7ths.[the comp 7th is more like the first shot at signing UDFA]

(but the comp pick is more like the first pick in the begining of the 4th round) So I would just say we have a full set of picks if you count that comp pick as a replacement for our 4th we gave away for duckett.

I think we are going to get some GREAT players out this years draft. Theres not much talent difference between a 1st rounder and a 3rd this year so that REALLY helps people with later round picks like us. jmo
though
the guy was surrounded by leaders in the locker room in Carolina.
I live in Charlotte and hear the bad stuff every day during the season and I just dont want him on my team.
nah man.. you are kinda wrong on this.. I remember hearing a big thing about there being no leaders in caroline and they were trying to force the leader role on peppers.. you cant just force that on him... Ever since their safety retired their team sucked. They dont have ANY team leaders. Steve Smith is a playmaker, but hes not a team leader.

btw- i just moved back to VA from raleigh, i was living there for about 2 years, and I have a lot of family in Raleigh and charlotte, and my cousin and my uncle by marriage are huge panther fans and they have been saying the same thing. At least they got lucky with Beason.
The guy has one bad year on a really bad team and everyone wants to remove the talent level from the previous years in which we all could argue he was one of the most dominate forces in the game. Almost all great athletes have 1-2 bad years in them. At 27-28 this guy didn’t just forget how to play football, come on!

Also, it is to our advantage that he had a bad year as his stock, and contract negotiation powers have dropped slightly, otherwise Carolina wouldn’t be willing to deal him.
football is unlike any sport. the older you get, you will reach the pinnacle of your individual success. i think Peppers has already peaked. it has been forever since the skins had a dominate pass rusher. so i understand your enthusiasm. but don't get blinded. he is definitely looking to get paid. and he has sustained his talent level, why is Carolina willing to trade him? i say no( again)
