All I know is, if Laveranues doesn't get his widescreen TV this time, he doesn't deserve it. |
Re: Coles Says Jets Lied to Him
This guy's been complaining since the day he joined the Jets, especially this year.

Re: Coles Says Jets Lied to Him
The guy is probably the most over payed receiver in the league and he's complaining?
The way it worked out when we traded him didn't he end up getting a huge windfall of bonus money too? "I ran clear out routes, I deserve TO money." Give me a break. |
Re: Coles Says Jets Lied to Him
I don't think he's asking for TO money, I think he's asking for a long term deal so he can know if he's gonna finish his career there, rather then head into another season worrying about his long term security. And if his numbers are down because he was an unselfish player and tried to help the team out, then it's wrong for them to use that as an excuse.
|
Re: Coles Says Jets Lied to Him
a 30 year old with 11mill in guaranteed money over the next two years and he's still complaining....
sorry, but after that he'll be old, and he's already an injury problem (toe never healed right, so he's slowed down, and multiple concussions). quit being a twirp. you're not going to be in the league in 4 years, so take what you got and deal with it. if the length is the issue, have the jets tack on 20 years at vet min for giggles and call it a day. |
Re: Coles Says Jets Lied to Him
I like Coles, but we don't need him.

Re: Coles Says Jets Lied to Him
Coles got a $13 million bonus in 2003, a $5 million bonus in 2005 and total base salaries of more than $9 million over the last five years, meaning he's averaged about $5.5 million a year since the expiration of his rookie contract while averaging about 950 receiving yards a season.
I think that bears repeating, because it sounds relevant to this discussion. Coles got a $13 million bonus in 2003, a $5 million bonus in 2005 and total base salaries of more than $9 million over the last five years, meaning he's averaged about $5.5 million a year since the expiration of his rookie contract while averaging about 950 receiving yards a season. He's has $18 million in bonuses since 2003. He's made in excess of $27 million over the last five years and $11 million more is guaranteed for the next two. If he plays this deal out, he'll likely either be enjoying the fruits of a new CBA, or signing a deal during an uncapped year. Why the complaints? |

Re: Coles Says Jets Lied to Him
Poor Coles. I liked him as a Redskin. I think he needed a good Doc. to fix his toe and stay off of it. In any event, didn't he leave the team bad mouthing the owner and organization? Didn't he say something along the lines of " I should never have left the Jets" also. Have fun Coles enjoy the team you should have never left.

Re: Coles Says Jets Lied to Him
Coles is always the victim.

Re: Coles Says Jets Lied to Him
While I agree that the "crybaby" comments are relevant to the situation the fact remains that its slightly inappropriate. Coles was molested for 3 three years by his stepfather, so in theory speaking out against what Coles feels is wrong is actually a healthy thing.
I seriously doubt that you were alluding to this Matty but let it be known for everyone else that bashes Coles and calls him a "crybaby" that the guys been through a lot throughout his life. Personal In September of 2005, Coles disclosed in a New York Times interview that he was molested by his stepfather between the ages of 10 to 13. Re: Coles Says Jets Lied to Him
I think just about all of us, at least all of us that have been here the last several years, are familiar with what Coles went through as a child. And it's a horrible thing. But I have no doubt Matty was speaking about his attitude as a football player only.

I know, as I stated before I doubt that Matty was alluding to that. I just think that if anyone has right to bitch and complain its Coles. Anyway looking back quoting anyone and then writing that post was a bad idea. Breath-think-post. Anyway I edited it now so water under the bridge. |

Interesting. I would tend to disagree, but interesting nonetheless. |

I'm well aware of his personal stuff and my comment was in no way related to that.

Re: Coles Says Jets Lied to Him
Laveranues has a tragic past. He creates for himself a tragic present. A cadre of therapists would argue as to whether there is a connection.
The point of the original post was to remind Redskins fans who thought Coles got run out of town of the fact that Coles has created his own professional atmosphere, and when things happen to him it isn't in a vacuum. I wasn't trying to bestow upon him victim status. |

And the reality is that a lot of guys in the NFL have been through a lot. Have they all been molested? Probably not, but still doesn't take away from the fact that several players have been through hell or worse. |

Any of the mods either, go back and read what they said. They explained their position without attacking you. We are the place for knowledgable fans, and with that comes members approaching arguments in a rational way that can be perceived to be mean/too blunt but is not the intention. I understand when 2-3 people argue against you it seems like they are jumping on you, but non of the posts were mean. Also talking about ES, atleast here you can take shots at mods, see the other thread about Om banning a long time member because of a joke. I still dont understand why people think ES is more liberal. |

Dirtbag -
My counterpoint was not intended to slight your point about Coles. Check the record here on our support of him when that news came out. IIRC we mods were zero tolerance on anyone who broached that subject matter in a lighthearted manner. My point (and I do have one) is that Coles put himself in a bad situation here by demanding a trade when he didn't like the offense in 2004 (despite catching 90 passes, he thought he was being misused). He appears to be putting himself in a bad situation in New York now by stating he need to be taken care of financially, despite collecting more bonus money in the past five years than nearly every player in the game. As a boy, Coles was the victim of an unspeakable crime. That is completely seperate from his professional travails now. |

I let my emotions get the best of me on a touchy subject. If anything I wish we could delete all my posts and the responses to the subject I brought up. This whole ordeal turned into an unintentional troll. If anything the Warpath is a place for discussing Football, and more specifically Redskin football. My post is completly off topic and is relatively close to producing the same effect that the trolls produced during certain events over the past year. Right now I just want to get back to talking Redskin football, and discuss how we're going to get rid of our picks this year. |
Re: Coles Says Jets Lied to Him
This is the reason I got kicked off the board years ago... Why would I go by the name EXoffender?
|
Re: Coles Says Jets Lied to Him
If Coles were a free agent now he would not get a big deal...he's not as good as he thinks he is and he's hit 30.
|
Re: Coles Says Jets Lied to Him
Don't like Coles. Liked him when he came on board with the redskins, but began complaining about not getting enough balls???? 90 BALLS ISN"T ENOUGH? Then he wouldn't get surgery on his toe, which to this day hasn't healed right. It is not worth the trouble to get him involved.

Re: Coles Says Jets Lied to Him
36 posts on this thread and no one has hit the real meat of this story. Coles isn't complaining that he's underpaid. He's complaining that the Jets lied to him and misled him about their intentions, stringing him along and repeatedly putting off an extension. If they promised him an extension, then praised him for his toughness and selflessness, then state their reason for not signing him as lack of production... that's pretty bogus if you ask me. Especially coming from a team with huge QB issues, and poor running game, and a lousy offensive line. It's not like he stunk up the joint with Peyton Manning throwing to him. Clemens is totally unproven and Pennington couldn't throw a football through a wet paper towel.
Coles is a leader on that team and the one constant on an otherwise anemic offense. They should resign him. He and Cotchery are a pretty good tandem. Bottom line is the Jets are cheap. |

Re: Coles Says Jets Lied to Him
did anyone see the Jets's official website a few years ago right before the Coles/Moss trade? there was a giant 87 and the words "Bring Back Coles". All I remember thinking is how bad that must have made Moss feel, and how much those fans liked Coles... I bet Coles wishes the Jets felt the same way.
