Gibbs hinted that Springs is hiding an injury
During the press conference he said that Jerry Gray noticed that Springs was slower when sprinting and breaking on the ball. If this is true I hope we trade his ass before an offical word gets out, this is becoming way to much of a habit.

Well if the coach said this in a press conference I thnk that the word is out. |
Re: Gibb's hinted that Spring's is hiding an injury
NOT GOOD.
Let us hope Macklin can step it up. |
Re: Gibb's hinted that Spring's is hiding an injury
Shit, but did he notice this before or during the game? If he noticed this after the game, then that still doesn't explain why Springs wasn't starting.
|
Re: Gibb's hinted that Spring's is hiding an injury
That's too bad for Springs and too bad for the 'Skins. He had a good game yesterday even though he was used sparingly.
|
Re: Gibb's hinted that Spring's is hiding an injury
Like your input thats awesome, good job man way to think it through
|
Re: Gibb's hinted that Spring's is hiding an injury
I suspect they're hiding something else. Any more on those disciplinary rumours that were being hinted at here last night?
Or they are just generally being cautious. The phrase injury-prone gets tossed about too much, but I do think it applies to Springs at this point. Save him for December to the extent you can. If you can limp along winning games with Smoot and Rogers while resting Springs, you are better off when the really important games are played. |
Re: Gibb's hinted that Spring's is hiding an injury
I was bewildered as to why the didn't play him.
He also was reported to have said he didn't know he wasn't starting until right before the game. I was thinking that perhaps they baulked at starting him so as to preserve him some for the next two games against division rivals. You know keep the injury prone star healthy for as long as possible... But this seems doubtful, you should really go all out on the first game of the season, and see what type of squad you really have. Ill be very concerned if he doesn't see the field soon. Rogers and Smoot are not a very staunch set of cb's. |

If he noticed that before the game that WOULD explain why Springs was not the starter. |
Re: Gibb's hinted that Spring's is hiding an injury
Yeah I was thinking that also
|
Re: Gibb's hinted that Spring's is hiding an injury
If springs is hurt AGAIN this should be no suprise. This guy can not stay healthy.
This is his last season in DC. I hope this injury is short lived. |

I haven't been able to follow up on that today |
Re: Gibb's hinted that Spring's is hiding an injury
We better hope he is just stiff and working out the rust . Rogers and Smoot will get burned all year with the pass rush being non existent , I thought Miami had a horrible line , yet Green had all freakin day to throw / Thank god chambers couldn't catch a cold ! We need a S. Spring at 100% to win more than 9 games this year .
|
Re: Gibb's hinted that Spring's is hiding an injury
its plain and simple, we need springs, to be the best football team we can possibly be. he is our best cover corner
|
Re: Gibb's hinted that Spring's is hiding an injury
Springs really needs to get healthy. If we have to depend on Smoot and Rogers all year as the top two guys, opposing offenes are gonna slice through us like Sherman through Atlanta.
|
Re: Gibb's hinted that Spring's is hiding an injury
Is this a surprise to anyone?? Springs is NEVER healthy, and he's getting old to be a starting corner. And if Chambers hadn't dropped several passes we might not have won that game. Smoot needs to step up as the starting corner so Springs can play more sparingly as the nickel and stay fresh. So many teams have HUGE injuries, Jansen included. I just want to avoid the damn injury bug for here on out.
|
Re: Gibb's hinted that Spring's is hiding an injury
I kinda thought it had more to do with the fact that he refused to restructure and maybe there's kinda some bad blood there. I don't blame him for not restructuring, though... thats kinda a thing you do when you think you're going to be at a place for a while and he knows they're looking for more youthful bodies in the secondary.

Re: Gibb's hinted that Spring's is hiding an injury
Seems Jason La Canfora was just as surprised as the rest of us not to see Springs; also he seems to believe springs is healthy:
"And all the while I can't help but be baffled by Spring's standing on the sidelines. Gregg Williams says he wants to keep the guys fresh and rotate and all of that jazz, but ain't no way I don't have Springs out there. Heard that after the game Trent Green was asked some of the Skins players what was up with that, 'cause the Dolphins went into the game hoping to pick on the guy not on Shawn's side, and ended up only facing Springs in the nickel package for the most part. Springs is healthy, and I'd be playing him like heck now." Redskins Insider Could this just be GW looking at the younger guys and giving Springs rest against an easy opponent? This is all very strange... |
Re: Gibb's hinted that Spring's is hiding an injury
Idk what it is but we need him to play, with the pass rush we have Smoot and Rogers can probably expect to have bad seasons back there. If we trade his ass after the season then whatever, but we can't expect to have success on defense without him for now.

Yeah that was a small typo, I meant after. |
Re: Gibb's hinted that Spring's is hiding an injury
Yes, very strange. Of all the plausible scenarios I've heard, it's got to be an injury issue.
Which is even more troubling since Springs played sparingly all preseason. |

Great idea! Let's trade away our best CB because he might have a minor injury that he played half the game with. Come on let's be rational here, it's the first week of the season and Shawn Springs has a minor injury that he played through, its not like he is out for the season. If Rogers, and Smoot have to start every game we will be in big time trouble, we need Shawn Springs to be out there as much as possible, horrible idea to trade Springs. |
Re: Gibb's hinted that Spring's is hiding an injury
BTW: In the same press conference Gibbs said that their concern about Springs came from what they saw during practice and that is why the made the decision to start Smoot, but that Srpings seemed to be 100% when he showed up for the game...He also said he will start games this year.
It seems that they are just trying to make sure h gets himself to 100% and can stay healthy down the stretch. I wouldn't be surprised if later in the season we see Smoot start again against an easier opponent in order to rest Springs a bit. Gibbs has confidence in all three cb's, but Springs is the man and will be in the starting lineup again very soon. |
Re: Gibb's hinted that Spring's is hiding an injury
I think it has nothing to do with health. I think snyder decided springs will be get his pay cut by hook or by crook

Is there a clause in Spring's contract stating if he doesn't start certain number of games, he doesn't earn 100% of his salary? |
Re: Gibb's hinted that Spring's is hiding an injury
Good look on watching that presser Will, I hope your right about Springs' health.
I normally wouldn't be concerned... but given Springs history, and age... it seems more than likely that he would get hurt this year. I'm praying that he's got another year left in the tank, because Smoot's cushion makes Rodgers look like he's pressing the receiver. We absolutely need good corners, that is a staple in this defense. We need to spend another high draft pick on the defensive backfield, or attack this problem via free agency next year. |
Re: Gibb's hinted that Spring's is hiding an injury
If we are to address this problem in the offseason (who knows maybe it will shore up during this season), I would rather see us pick up a veteran corner via free agency because I don't want to see another rookie in there at cornerback.

Wouldn't surprise me if we take another look at Asante Samuel again next year Samuel guaranteed free agency if team wins 12 | New England Patriots | projo.com | The Providence Journal |

If I ever hear of a Redskins coach holding someone out against a "easy opponent" I will not stop petitioning until they are fired!!...but seriously...I dont understand why he wouldnt start, if it is a rotation dont you think Springs would have been the first one?? I dont know but I hope to see him starting next week against a much more dangerous offense in Philadlephia. |
Re: Gibb's hinted that Spring's is hiding an injury
My gut feeling is that Springs is not on great terms with Williams, Gibbs, and / or Snyder.. He just said this to the post:
Springs said. "I don't know what Coach Gibbs is talking about." Springs, who rebuffed requests for him to slash his salary in the offseason, said that he is not anticipating a quick change to his starting status. "Start? I doubt it," Springs said. "Usually when you start the season off like that, that's probably the way it is." Springs said that he is okay with his role, and was not shocked to be on the bench, though privately some players said that the coaches did not clarify the starting situation with the corners until game day, and did not speak with them to clarify their status. Springs laughed that off. "Man, with my salary this year I'm not trippin,' " he said. The two bolded comments look like shots at Gibbs and Snyder. |
Re: Gibb's hinted that Spring's is hiding an injury
We really don't need another "player in the doghouse" story. Hopefully it's something minor and we can just get on with the season.

I was just about to post something to this effect....if GW hasn't figured out that this kind of crap hurts the team...then he'll never be a head coach...granted that my statement is only valid if it is in fact a case of springs being "in the dog house" |
Re: Gibb's hinted that Spring's is hiding an injury
Hopefully this will blow over. Hopefully they are just being careful with him. Williams needs to do whatever he needs to do to nip this in the bud so we can move on. We certainly don't need another Dale Lindsay/Lavar situation. Figure out a way to co-exist and then everyone smile and keep your mouth shut. I'll never understand all this childishness.
And Springs is getting all his money for this season, so there is no reason for him to be upset. What does he want? A guaranteed lifetime contract? Maybe a Snickers bar? |

Re: Gibb's hinted that Spring's is hiding an injury
Without being behind the scenes, it looks like there's some vindictiveness going on here, Springs refused to get on board with a pay cut, and now it's payback, Springs looked like he wasnt quite cutting the way he should? Awfully astute for a coach who has been playing Mark Brunell for the last 3 years, to find out after every bad performance Mark may have had an arm or leg injury? What happened to letting Springs go out on the field and fight his guts out? Gibbs constantly sings the praises of players who fight through injuries, yet Springs and the players around him say he's fine and yet he's not on the field? I have to laugh, at least have the guts to leave out the lame excuses.
|
Re: Gibb's hinted that Spring's is hiding an injury
Wow. I can't see him being injured as much as he has. I like him, but this can't be over-looked.
|
Re: Gibb's hinted that Spring's is hiding an injury
There was an article in the wash post a month ago or so in which Springs was asked by the coaches about playing nickel & he said he was cool w/it as it would help extend his career. Now it sounds like he's pissed at not starting, or at least pissed at Gibbs' explanation.
Hopefully the two talk this week & it's settled. I agree w/those who said that this sounds too much like a lavar, l. coles situation. They should be over that stuff, can't expect the team to come together w/those circumstances. |
Re: Gibb's hinted that Spring's is hiding an injury
This all sounds a little familiar. Springs has contract dispute, now all of the sudden he isn't good enough to play? The guy says he is as healthy this year as he has been coming into the last 2 or 3 seasons. Yes smoot and rogers are younger, but no where near the cover abilities of Springs. Its crazy how these things all work out. I just think this has nothing to do with injury. If he was injured and cant run, then why did they play him at all? This stinks of Snyder laying down the hammer because Springs wouldn't redo his deal.
