JLC says Blaylock is a Skin
Redskins Insider
RB Derrick Blaylock agreed to terms a little while ago according to his agent. I think it's a nice signing for depth and he will be someone to watch at camp. I know Rock will be keeping an eye on him. He's prospered in this system before and in KC averaged like 4.7 per carry, was a good return guy and scored 8 TDs in 2004, starting 5 games. |
Re: JLC says Blaylock is a Skin
Scouts Inc. Profile:
Full Name: Derrick DeShaun Blaylock Born: August 23, 1979 Atlanta, TX Height: 5-9 Weight: 210 lbs. Age: 27 Pos: RB Experience: 5 years College: Stephen F. Austin Drafted: Year:2001 Round:5 Pick:19, Chiefs 2007 Scouting Report - Scouts Inc. Grade: 61 | Key Alert: B Comment: Blaylock is an athletic change-of-pace back. He was the Jets' alternate kickoff return specialist in 2005 and is pretty versatile. He is a slasher who has good speed and acceleration to get downhill quickly and press the hole. He has deceptive big-play ability and a little more power than his size suggests. He has some run instincts and vision. He has decent hands and can be productive after the catch in the open field. But Blaylock is undersized and is more effective on the perimeter than inside. He doesn't always see run lanes develop and too often tries to cut back or bounce outside. He lacks the power to consistently run through contact between the tackles. He is a small receiving target, and he goes down easily after the catch. He lacks bulk and good leverage in pass protection. He plays small and is inconsistent as a blocker. |
Re: JLC says Blaylock is a Skin
The LAST thing we need is another RB. Give me a break! All Rock Cartwright has done is be a loyal Redskin and do what is asked of him. Plus he is a team leader who actually contributes. So to bring in Blaylock makes no sense at all. Who gives a rats ass if he knows Al's system.

Re: JLC says Blaylock is a Skin
It's a good move for depth considering that Portis may take a while to come back and they're certainly not going to rush anything with him. Best of all it didn't cost us any draft picks. Slowly but surely I think this front office is learning.

Re: JLC says Blaylock is a Skin
I dont see the big deal, they carried 4 RB's last year. Portis, Betts, Cartwright, and Duckett. All they did was replaced Duckett.

Yeah, and thats great and all. All I am saying is that they had 4 RB's last year and they will probably have 4 RB's this year. I really dont see Rock going anywhere. |
Re: JLC says Blaylock is a Skin
It sure isn't a very good idea to carry less than four runningbacks in a run first system with a developing qb. And I don't see how Rock has been so loyal. Betts has been loyal. It's not like Rock had any better opportunities. I mean, he has played for the team he is under contract to. To not sign needed depth out of perceived loyalty to a backup is folly.

Re: JLC says Blaylock is a Skin
I also think it's a great depth signing. He's not gonna break the bank.
Also, CP status is uncertain, as far as his time frame for when he will be ready to go full speed. |
Re: JLC says Blaylock is a Skin
good signing. Whoever is the 3rd string back is going to get significant carries this year. I am not comfortable w/Rock stepping in as the #2 when CP or LB is hurt.

Yay! Common sense wins again! Having Blaylock is a good move all around. He will be able to fill in if Portis or Betts are banged up, as well filling in for Cartwright's ko duties should he be unavailable for a game. He knows Saunders system and flourished quite well in his limited starting duties. |

Maybe its to play him solely during the preseason in place of Portis? |

Sort of like what the Chargers do with LT ... who had a decent season last year. |

Yesssssssssss! Sign him for a 1/4 season contract. |
Re: JLC says Blaylock is a Skin
I like the signing, Portis may not be completely healthy, Betts has a history of nagging injuries. In the event either suffer a setback, we won't have to make another panic move like last year with the Duckett deal........Good move, if he makes the roster he can contribute in various ways.

Rock is arguably one of my top 5 favorite skins....but if Blaylock is better for the job, than who really gives a crap?? They can battle it out in camp, and whoever is better willl play. Its about winning. |
Re: JLC says Blaylock is a Skin
I wonder if little Westbrook will be in the mix. I played against him when he was at Salisbury, He's not bad at all.

I agree, and I really don't see why this move would be a serious threat to Rock as long as he keeps doing what he's been doing all along. Gibbs loves him and there's going to be room for 4 backs just like last year. No reason to get all crazy about this. |

The thing is, league roster restrictions will force either Rock or Blalock to be inactive anyway. Rarely do teams activate 4 running backs on game day. |

This is exactly right. Let the chips fall where they will. |

I didn't say he was the team leader. He is one of the leaders. Especially on teams. |

I understand what your saying. The NFL is not for people who can't take competition. |

My exact sentiments. This is a great move based on the injury history of Portis and Betts. If this is this year's version of the TJ Duckett move, then our front office is definitely learning. We get a solid veteran #3, he's only 27, knows Saunders and his 700000 page playbook, and we didn't piss away draft picks to get him. Welcome Derrick Blaylock, good job FO. |
Re: JLC says Blaylock is a Skin
Why is he not on the roster?
