Is Sammy Knight a solution at Safety?
Just saw the Chiefs cut Sammy Knight. Although he has 10 years in the league does anyone know if he is still any good? Is he primarily a cover safety that would compliment Sean Taylor or is his style like AA?

Re: Is Sammy Knight a solution at Safety?
I think Sammy Knight is a more than solid player but not for us in my opinion. He's not great against the pass and I could see us having the same problems we had with Arch. I'd pass

Re: Is Sammy Knight a solution at Safety?
i think he is known for his tackling rather than his coverage
|
Re: Is Sammy Knight a solution at Safety?
he's alright i just like watching him dive at santana moss in the game in 05 and moss just runs right past him and knight just goes into the bench sliding hilarious but he is a good player just not for us

Re: Is Sammy Knight a solution at Safety?
Nope.

Re: Is Sammy Knight a solution at Safety?
No, but LeRon Landry is.

Exactly!!!!!!!! |
Re: Is Sammy Knight a solution at Safety?
Everybody stop with the Landry. We arent drafting Landry

We're not going to pass on a DL to get Landy unless someone in the front office is insane, and yes we should go after Knight. He's getting older, but he can cover (check his record) and still gets a lot of tackles. He would legitimately beat out our other safeties (other than ST, whom he would help stabilize) and end the idea that Springs might be needed at safety. In my opinion, Knight's still better at his position than Rogers and Smoot are at theirs. Teams will throw at our corners, not our safeties. Knight has a history of timely interceptions and will not make mistakes or be easily beaten. I think he had in the neighborhood of eighty tackles last year and has never been a liability on coverage. Why do you guys think he has been? He's being cut because of money and a very talented young guy behind him, not because he can't play. |

you sound like someones dad giving them hell. and i think knight is a fine player, he isnt for the skins. almost the same kind of safety as archelutta. |
Re: Is Sammy Knight a solution at Safety?
Everyone needs to stop reading that Landry thread over there. It's twisting your perception.

Re: Is Sammy Knight a solution at Safety?
over where? and good morning
|
Re: Is Sammy Knight a solution at Safety?
"There". You know what I mean. :D
I just find it interesting that while many of us frequent both sites, there's this HUGE Landry thread over "there" and now apparently Landry is an option?! |
Re: Is Sammy Knight a solution at Safety?
no. I believe preilou(never spell it right) if healthy, which he should be, will play just fine. He was going to be starting over Arch last year anyway. Stoutmier filled in nicely when he was here. Plus with us likely keeping Springs that gives us 3 good corners and if Bly comes that is 4, with springs possibly playing more of a safety role. I think Rogers, Smoot, Springs, Preilou, Stoutmier, Taylor, Fox, Doughty, and possibly Bly would give us a lot of options.

Re: Is Sammy Knight a solution at Safety?
If we were to trade down draft Landry, keep spring's in the corner rotation and focus on the Dline/ OG with the extra picks it wouldn't be that bad
|
Re: Is Sammy Knight a solution at Safety?
we have no business drafting landry. not saying hes a bad player, but its pointless. for once we need to start up front. id LIKE more to take a DE with this pick, but a tackle works for me too.
assuming we make some kind of deal, i say we take the best DE available and a second/third round DT. |
Re: Is Sammy Knight a solution at Safety?
If we wanted to draft a sexy pic, we'd pick up landry. If we wanted a better team, we'd draft a DL.
Sammy Knight, doesn't that sound like a porn star name. I don't like that one bit. |

Re: Is Sammy Knight a solution at Safety?
I hope this is a humor thread??? GOD NO.

That wouldn't be possible mathematically -- only five would be gone before us since we pick at #6. I'd put cornerback at a higher need for us rather than safety. Rogers could turn out to be trash, Smoot is just a band-aid, and Springs is on his last legs. |
Re: Is Sammy Knight a solution at Safety?
I just wanted to give my personal evaluation of our safeties for this coming season since were on the topic.
Sean Taylor: We know he has it locked down at FS, hopefully he improves his coverage skills this year, and he will be one of the best Safeties in the leauge this year. Two consecutive Pro Bowls?? after Sean Taylor I am extremely concerned with our safeties. Pierson Prioleau: Is 30 years old, and has really only started two complete seasons his entire career, and not to mention he has only one interception in his entire career. I like Prioleau and I hope he can do well for us next year, but you have to be concerned with the injury he suffered last year, and if that will affect him this year. Omar Stoutmire: Omar did a good job with us in 2005, and it looks like he had an okay season with the Saints last year with 9 starts, and 2 interceptions, he knows the system, but at 33 years old he is just a backup at this point in his career, and should only start if Prioleau is injured. Vernon Fox: We seen what Vernon is capable of from his 6 starts last year, and personally I don't think he is worthy of a starting position in the NFL, and is just a viable backup, but Vernon is a very good special teams player. Reed Doughty: Obviously this kid is a good on special teams, but as far as coming in at safety goes we have no clue what he can do, but I am guessing it's nothing spectacular. So after Sean Taylor I feel as if we have no other really "starting claiber" safeties to complement Taylor, hopefully Prioleau does well this year, but I am still concerned, and I think the SS issue is going to have to be addressed next year. |

People were pretty high on Prioleau before he got hurt last year. He and Stoutmire filled in nicely in '05 when called upon -- though you have to wonder if they overachieved like so many others on defense during the playoff run. Hopefully they're not tapped out, we'll need them to step up again this season. I don't remember where I read this, but it seems to be a prominent philosophy among some general managers across the league -- some consider safety the one position on defense you can where you can "get by" without having to spend high draft picks. Only in cases where there's an absolute phenom, like Sean Taylor, do you take the plunge and devote a high choice to the position. If the front seven does its job and the corners can provide solid coverage, the safeties generally look great. |

Hopefully Prioleau, Stoutmire, and Fox weren't overachieving for our sakes, but it's hard to believe that they weren't. I also agree that if we have good play from our front seven, and CB's Taylor and Prioleau (or whoever else is at SS) will have good years, hopefully this is the case. |
Re: Is Sammy Knight a solution at Safety?
i dont like the idea of sighning Knight at all. I tihnk we are ok at saftey, the players we have will make it work.
