Re: Rumor: Nate Clements to 49ers.
The rumor here at work is $24 million signing bonus
|
Re: Rumor: Nate Clements to 49ers.
Email from Geoff Hobson:
Clements is gone to san fran for $23 M to sign - a deal the Bengals could have done if they cut the few guys who do play defense.
Apparently Geoff Hobson writes for Bengals.com, so if this email was actually written, he is in position to have knowledge of such a deal. |

Well there you go |
Re: Rumor: Nate Clements to 49ers.
24 mill????
Sh*t. The market is going to be worse than thought. That smokes Champ's deal. |
Re: Rumor: Nate Clements to 49ers.
I have no idea who that guy is GTripp, but that sounds about right.
|
Re: Rumor: Nate Clements to 49ers.
Smoot is the best option for us. And this might be a blessing in disguise because he will be much cheaper than any of the CBs out there. Also if we spend less on CBs we might have more room, which equates to a higher possibility of resigning dock.
|
Re: Rumor: Nate Clements to 49ers.
24 mill. to sign???!!??! man we had no chance to get him. The f-n redonkulous!
|
Re: Rumor: Nate Clements to 49ers.
At this point, Smoot is the best available.
|
Re: Rumor: Nate Clements to 49ers.
LOL what a joke, they can have him for that price.
He's no Champ, not even close. These contracts are going to be insane... buckle up. |
Re: Rumor: Nate Clements to 49ers.
I disagree that Clements isn't worth that. The salary cap has skyrocketed recently, so there should be several CBs who are worth more than what Champ got from the Broncos a few years ago.
If Champ were on the open market right now, he'd be worth a $35 million signing bonus. If Peyton Manning were on the market right now, he'd be worth a $50 million signing bonus, at least. That's the nature of a changing market. You have to adjust to new contract values quickly. It's not that Clements isn't worth that amount, it's that the guys we now have under contract are incredible bargains in comparison. |
Re: Rumor: Nate Clements to 49ers.
That's it!
|
Re: Rumor: Nate Clements to 49ers.
Your far better off if you don't a house when the market is at it's peak, and the supply is low? Much better if you can wait a little while and let things stabilize.
You can get a lot of houses for 24m............whatever the F... that means |
Re: Rumor: Nate Clements to 49ers.
Just to clarify, I don't have confirmation that the deal is $24 million. The guy from Bengals.com is saying $23 million so it can't be too far off I suppose.
Also, hearing they're close to a deal with Adailus Thomas |

No he's not. True shutdown corners like Champ would get a lot more than $24 million up front. |
Re: Rumor: Nate Clements to 49ers.
Our 2006 signing bonuses are looking pretty puny right now.

Yep. And next year's will dwarf this year's. When we see what Adalius Thomas gets, we're going to feel pretty good about what we're paying Andre Carter. |

The thing with Thomas, I think that most teams don't know whether to give him DE money or LB money because he's a hybrid sort. He's a good linebacker and he's a good pass rusher off the edges as well. |
Re: Rumor: Nate Clements to 49ers.
Right, but what I meant (I should have been more clear) was has he gone to meet with any teams yet? Over the past week ESPN made it seem like he's be in San Fran right away but I haven't heard a thing about it yet.
|
Re: Rumor: Nate Clements to 49ers.
Oh, okay...you're right. I haven't heard much.
You know, it would be very interesting to see if the Cowboys show some interest in this guy as well as the Giants. Either could be a good fit. |
Re: Rumor: Nate Clements to 49ers.
Yeah, that's the sort of thing that I don't want to happen. Then again, if it did, hopefully we would only have to deal with him for 2-3 seasons because he its getting up there in age.
EDIT: Nevermind, he's younger than I thought |

Thanks, I must have missed that line. Stupid lexdysia.
|
Re: Rumor: Nate Clements to 49ers.
Any news on Smoot yet?
|
Re: Rumor: Nate Clements to 49ers.
ill tell you what. with all the bitching and moaning that goes on around here, how come no one ever praises our capologist? those puny 5 million dollar signing bonus', along with the 5 year contracts look like bargain basement prices right now. kudos to our front office

Re: Rumor: Nate Clements to 49ers.
As to Thomas, I think someone is going to seriously overpay for this guy. He's been around for a while and it was only this year that he came up big. Don't get me wrong, I think the guy has talent BUT I also think that Baltimore's D Coordinator (Rex "son of buddy" Ryan) was very creative in their use of him.
He is not a plug-and-play guy. He needs a scheme that lets him have a lot of options in how to play. You stick him in as a traditional LB or DE, he is nothing special (Baltimore did both of those things - he was good but not superstar good). With that said, a creative D-coordinator could have a lot of fun with this guy. If I was him, I would've been headed to Boston so fast it would have made your head spin. If the Pats were anywhere close in terms of money - I would have accepted less to play on Belichecks D. Completely off topic - With salaries and SB's so high, you would think a few of these players would think quality of life issues in making their decisions. I mean, really, how much money do you need? If its between signing with a loser for 20M and a winner for 15M - I go with the winner every time. But hey, that's just me. Since it is unlikely I will ever be confronted with two such offers, I am fairly certain I shall never have to face such a dilemma. |
Re: Rumor: Nate Clements to 49ers.
Laying 5mil on the table is a pretty serious decison. Don't let the difference between 20 and 15 being 5 fool you. The part that is important is the MILLION. 5 is not a lot. 5,000,000 is a huge amount.

I said 5 days ago the Niners were gonna get him and he would get between $20-25 million guaranteed. But a $24 million SIGNING BONUS!! Holy shit, what is he, Peyton Manning??? |

I absolutely agree that 5,000,000 is a huge amount. But that's my point, 15,000,000 is a HUGE amount. Give me 15,000,000 NOW and I will never have to work another day in my life. I invest the lot, and, even at a exceptionally conservative 3% interest, that's 450,000 a year for the rest of my life. Say I spend 1,500,000 to get my self set in a nice house, couple nice cars, etc. I still have, at min ~400,000 a year to spend - with no mortgage or car payments. If that is an insufficient amount to live well on, then you, my friend, have a problem with budgeting. (Hell, you could even let loose on occassion and make it rain for a few hookers). Yes this is simplistic and doesn't account for taxes, but my point is that, at the numbers being thrown around, a million here and there is just greed for greed sake. Okay, I await the - "well it's the sports culture that costs money" - response (or its equivalent) |
