ESPN: Bly Traded to Broncos
Per the ESPN ticker, Dre Bly has been traded to Denver. Looks like we're looking at Clements and/or Smoot and, since some other cap-rich team will likely outbid us for Clements, we'll probably end up with Smoot and Rogers as our corners with some less well-known corner as the nickel.

Re: ESPN: Bly Traded to Broncos
I think we keep Springs for 2007 and cut him on this day, 2008.
And somehow I've reached 2,500 posts. My only question is this: when the heck did I hit 2000? |

Re: ESPN: Bly Traded to Broncos
Wow. If the Broncos have Bly at one corner and Champ at the other, that ought to give their defensive coordinators a lot of flexibility in terms of blitzes...
|
Re: ESPN: Bly Traded to Broncos
yeah they shouldn't have cover issues.
|
Re: ESPN: Bly Traded to Broncos
If we go into 07' with Smoot/Rogers as our corners, I think were in trouble. We need to keep Springs if thats the case. I mean I like both guys, but thats a huge risk imo.

Yeah, that's taking a big time risk with Smoot and Rogers. Smoot has a tendency to get beat, but I love the intensity the guy brings, the way he plays, and yes, all the smack he talks. All that, and he usually can play hurt AND hang onto interceptions. He's not great, but I think he's as good as anyone they'd have, more because Springs can't stay healthy than anything else. |
Re: ESPN: Bly Traded to Broncos
Yeah we have to keep Springs. I am not a big fan of dumping our best corner. Get a damn restructure worked out.
|
Re: ESPN: Bly Traded to Broncos
Sign Smoot keep Springs sign Fletcher and then sign some surprise 35 million dollar contract player hopefully for the Defense and we are done. I won't be shocked if they make a big play for Clements, but I don't think we can bully other teams under these cap conditions.
|
Re: ESPN: Bly Traded to Broncos
If I'm not mistaken, Smooty spent a significant amount of pine time in '06. We need Springs in the rotation. It may help Springs health and longevity to no be an every down corner. he has to get a deal done as well. Then again............all that my be total BS
|
Re: ESPN: Bly Traded to Broncos
As to Springs restructure: Is it just that we are trying to free cap space? Or is he due some bonus or such if he is on the roster?
If (a) then it's really not to big a deal - we will just have to find some other way to get cap space and we need not cut him. If (b), then - yes - that could mean bye bye Shawn. |
Re: ESPN: Bly Traded to Broncos
Springs, Smoot. Rogers isn't that bad
|
Re: ESPN: Bly Traded to Broncos
If we can trade down we could hopefully get something like Pittcock/Jarvis Moss and Wilson/Houston
|
Re: ESPN: Bly Traded to Broncos
Here's one for all you Bailey for Portis trade haters out there - Our second rounder became Tatum Bell for the Broncos. It could be argued that, if the trade had not happened and we had appeased Bailey - we could now have a CB trio of Bailey, Bly' and Rogers, w/ Betts as our main RB.

Re: ESPN: Bly Traded to Broncos
I'm so used to getting what I want from the Danny that I am genuinely saddened by this development. I would not mind Smoot coming back.

Re: ESPN: Bly Traded to Broncos
Seems like alot to give up for Bly.

yeah that seems like a worse trade than the champ-portis deal, bly is 30, too much to give up for an aging corner |
Re: ESPN: Bly Traded to Broncos
Dont worry about our secondary, The Ade is going to have a breakout year in 2007!!!

broncos screwed us over again

Really? I think it's a pretty fair trade. Neither Bell nor Foster were working out for the Broncos. Bell never became the Portis-esque back people thought he would become, hence his having to split time with UFA Mike Bell. Foster was supposedly in danger of being cut. I personally do not like Bly (who I think is an aging malcontent) and I'm glad we didn't trade for him, but he's probably of more value to Denver than Foster and Bell. Someone on that "other site" speculated that the Broncos are trying to swap 1st rounders with us to get Adrian Peterson. That would make sense given Denver's lack of RBs, the rampant speculation that Shanahan was going to get the team a franchise back this offseason, and that Adrian Peterson seems to be a good fit for the Broncos. Then again, the Browns will probably nab him at #3. |

i meant to say broncos screwed us all over again |
Re: ESPN: Bly Traded to Broncos
Yeah it think the Broncos kinda got the short end of the stick, but we should all remember that this isnt really a hole the Broncos expected to be in. Considering the circumstnaces around why they need a 2nd cornerback, I'm not really going to bash it. They gave up a couple guys, get a decent player in return.

I don't know why they would dump Springs if they can't get Clements. With the salaries that are flying around this year 7 million plus for Springs seems pretty reasonable. Drop him next year when you can save a ton on the cap. |

I agree. We may be forced to keep Springs which may be a blessing. |
Re: ESPN: Bly Traded to Broncos
Now that he's a Bronco, The Skins should be able to find a creative way to acquire Bly.

I know it was idle speculation from a fan site but how ironic would it be if they made a move up the board to get Peterson? After all this BS about how it is the system and not the players to see them make a move like that would be great. Especially after the last few guys didn't exactly set the world on fire in that "great" system. |

Yeah, I remember them saying that Quentin Griffin was going to be the next Terrell Davis. Then it was Tatum Bell. Then it was Ron Dayne. Then it was Mike Bell. Maybe, just maybe, guys like Terrell Davis and Clinton Portis were/are actually good backs and not "system guys." |

When Alex Gibbs left for Atlanta, their system went with him. And that system is basically that the o-line plays as dirty as possible and makes ever d-lineman/linebacker fear for their knees (and careers), causing them to hesitate, which allows rb's to get loose. |

It's hard for a lot of fans and media members to understand that great players are the only method of producing continued success. Obviously the Denver running system has been successful for awhile, but only among the leagues' best when a guy like Portis or Mike Anderson or Terrell Davis had the football. Mike Shanahan obviously has a knack for noticing RB talent, and the Denver O line has been underrated for years, but that doesn't mean the cut block system is any "better" than anyother zone or man blocking system. It's just different. Players make it successful. |
Re: ESPN: Bly Traded to Broncos
I've said it before and I'll say it again. People can gloat all day about Mike Shanahan and Denver's system for running backs. But he hasn't won 3 Super Bowls with 3 different running backs, Gibbs has (4 really, when you consider George Rogers was the man all year long in '87). And yes Portis is a system back...the NFL system.
|
Re: ESPN: Bly Traded to Broncos
Why isn't anyone wondering why Detroit needs the Tatum Tot when they have KJones? What do they know that we don't know??
What a horrible trade for FF players everywhere. |

You know what else pisses me off about Denver: I feel like they go out every offseason and get as many, if not more, free agents as we do but everyone always pisses on us for trying to build through free agency. I guess the difference is that they make the playoffs pretty consistently, but it's not like they usually go very far once they get there. I used to like the broncos but the more I think about it the more I say "F them." :soapbox: |

kevin jones hasn't played a complete season in awhile. i'm not suprised

Bell hasn't, either... |
Re: ESPN: Bly Traded to Broncos
Kevin Jones actually suffered a serious leg injury last year. He will not be back until the middle of the season, and he may not return to the back he used to be. Tatum Bell is an insurance policy at best and at worst the next great Detroit Lions featured running back.

Travis Henry is about to be cut by the Titans because they don't want to pay him a $8M bonus. With rumors of McGahee being traded, have you heard anything about the Bills looking at Henry again? I never understood why you guys didn't keep him, he looked good in Buffalo and Nashville. |

"Next" great Lions back? Sanders, o.k. Who was great besides him? Artose Pinner? I would be skeptical of Tatum if he couldn't thrive in Denver. |
