Let's talk defense
Alright the offense is a problem, but is anyone else concerned about the D too?
Dumb penalties. Shoddy tackling. Missed opportunities (Rogers dropping an easy INT) Too many big plays given up. Missing Springs hurts. But that doesn't excuse the mental errors and overall sloppiness we've seen the past 2 weeks. This is a unit that returned the majority of the starters. Same system for the 3rd year in a row. So what's the problem?? |
Re: Let's talk defense
Is the line healthy? That's my first thought.
|
Re: Let's talk defense
I was watching the game yesterday and someone uttered, "damn the redskins d sucks". I said that was the first time in 2 years i had heard that. That hurt.
WTF is up with our boy GW? Our 3rd down defense is beyond atrocious |
Re: Let's talk defense
I heard that we signed a pass rusher named Carter when are we going to see him play?
|
Re: Let's talk defense
I gotta' agree TAFKAS. Griffin used to be such a force and we hardly got a push in the middle.
Rogers missing INTs? That's par for the course. :D |

Re: Let's talk defense
I think I yelled something like "9th overall piece of shit" at the TV when Rogers dropped that potential INT. You have got to come up with that one.
I really don't like Carter at all because he has done absolutely nothing to make me like him. GW was comparing him to a young Jevon Kearse, but I don't think he got close to bledsoe once last night. I'd like to see Wynn get int he game a little more. |
Re: Let's talk defense
Rogers just has to start making those plays. The ball hit him right in the chest and he flat out dropped it.
Thankfully Taylor made a play right after with the strip. |
Re: Let's talk defense
--Andre Carter sucks. At the very least, he was supposed to draw double teams and open things up for Philip Daniels. HA!
--They've put all of their stock into Cornelius Griffin and given him absolutely no help. How many seasons were they expecting him to stop the run all by himself? -- Drafting Rocky was a mistake. The same mentality the coaching staff has with regard to Mark Brunell, equally applied to Shawn Springs. They blindly thought they could endlessly rely on him, and now it's come back to bite them. -- Yet another season went by without any thought of addressing the pass rush other than throwing money at a 49er castoff. And now because Shawn Springs is out, they have no ability whatsoever to apply pressure to the opposing quarterback -- because, you know, you have to have a shutdown corner to in order to get sacks. How's that for some backwards logic? |
Re: Let's talk defense
Yes, the defense has been just as much at fault as the offense. Last year, the defense bailed out the offense several times, including the playoff win at Tampa. With the defense being pretty weak this year, the offense owes it to them to step up. Unfortunately, that probably won;t happen too often this season.

Did you bug my house? I said that to my dad, but I don't think I posted it. In fact, I had to put my computer away because I was afraid I would get mad and throw it across the room (turns out I've become numb to our crappy play and I didn't over-react).

Re: Let's talk defense
I'm sorry guys but right now you should ask for a refund from your FA acquisitions 0 - 4
Brandon Lloyd .- is he even playing cause I didn't see him Randal El.- the most average 30mill punt returner Archuleta.- Lot's of tackles 0 coverage he goes for every fake run is easy to beat him. Carter.- Who? |
Re: Let's talk defense
So what's the problem??
all of the above. Seriously though - they need to get back to basics with the tackling and coverage. Forget gameplanning if the basics aren't there - the answer would be: drilling, drilling and more drilling until they get the basics right. |

Re: Let's talk defense
The only two guys strapping it on for the defense are Taylor and Marshall. Everyone else leaves a lot to be desired honestly.
I actually think Rumph and Wright will improve shortly. I honestly think they are going through some growing pains. But they are definitely nickel material as far as I can see. I don't know what in the hell is going on with Andre Carter....Arch isn't far behind him. I don't know, but Carter just seems too quiet, if you know what I mean? He seems to lack intensity on the field. I never see him slapping pads or stomping on the ground or yelling...he just seems invisible out there. The defense has seemed to lost it's swagger. |
Re: Let's talk defense
Yup, and it left with Ryan Clark who always layed the lumber. For being a "workout warrior" Archuleta sure doesn't hit people very hard. I always see him like using every bit of his strength just to drive someone out of bounds.
|
Re: Let's talk defense
I knew Archuleta was going to break our hearts as soon as I saw the size of his contract. Speaking of which, if we don't extend Sean Taylor's before season's end, we're out of our minds!
|
Re: Let's talk defense
Does this all go back to the short summer camp and the light practices we had. I think the coaching staff took things to light this summer and it is effecting our play.

Re: Let's talk defense
Our defense is no way near as aggresive as they were last year. I don't remember us blitzing with any DBs last night. Could be wrong, though. Also, with all those three and outs the defense was just worn down which could explain our shitty tackling later in the game.
This is the problem I have with way we build a team. We give up draft picks to get these free agents and they don't pan out like we hoped they would. So now our obvious need is the D-line and no draft picks to pick up some young stud. |

Yeah I saw the game 5 passes 34 yards 2 runs 7 yards and 1 good punt return for 15 yards Sorry Man this isn't bringging the SHIT in my book.... again the most average gimmik/PR in the game for 30+ mill. |

Re: Let's talk defense
You know what's funny? Our team played this bad last year for the first couple of games but somehow came up winners. Now we're 0-2 and I can't figure how the hell we beat anybody playing like this last year.
Oh and I thought the D was not great last night but wasn't nearly as bad as last week. Getting Springs back would help but we need to put some front 4 pressure on QBs to win. |
Re: Let's talk defense
I just dont understand the lack of pressure. Last two years we have made our name on pressuring the QB. Now, Springs being out probably contributes to how many people we can bring on a blitz, but come on. I would try moving Carter to left side and let Daniels go back to his original RE spot. Generally team put their best pass blocker on the QB's blind side. Maybe moving him to the LE spot, he would go up a RT that isn't quite as good at pass blocking. I speak in overall terms when saying the LT is usually your best pass blocker. Holdman looks better than last year, but I think he still get taken out of the play too much. Teams have run against that side of the D pretty effectively. I think when springs gets back on the field, we will be able to bring some more people on the blitz and create a little more pressure.
I think, this all goes on the offense's shoulders. If they continue to go 3 and out, the D is getting worn out. we need those guys to stay fresh and play with a lead. GW is very good at playing with a lead, when teams have to throw the ball more. |

If Coach Williams is smart he'll try to replace Masrhall at the MLB spot. We need a CB who can cover. People talked about why we let Smoot go after giving Champ up. I think us not re-signing Clark was a bigger setback. |

Yep, the Ryan Clark thing was a mistake. Add him to a long list of players that we develop and then refuse to keep in exchange for the high priced free agent. Brilliant. Seriously though, who'd have thought that our pass rush was so dependent on ... Shawn Springs? Huh? |

Can argue there i'll give the benefit of the doubt until I see at least 3 more games. |
Re: Let's talk defense
The defense sucks because of Brunell. It's his fault!
The funny thing is, this comment sounds ridiculous, but when the offense is 6 for 27 on third downs over the course of two games, the defense is on the field for far too long. And since all but a couple of those third down tries were passes, it IS Brunell's fault. |
Re: Let's talk defense
I notice more than a few things wrong with the D:
The CBs are horrible in run support. The LBs and the line tends to stretch plays out, occupying blockers. But where the hell are Rogers and Wright to seal the corner? No pass rush. Duh. Kenny Wright is downright awful. Just awful. Penalties all over the damn place. We can't blitz because Rogers is average in coverage and Wright sucks. Archuleta is always out of position. No big plays. Only one turnover. Only one or two sacks. |
Re: Let's talk defense
I wonder if Griffin is healthy from his knee issue? I wonder if Daniels is healthy too.
|

I think our defense isn't in terrible shape.... Springs returns soon.... we can take the texans, I'm not petrified. Offense is worse than '04. Which is sad. That scares me. |

I forgot DC's are like the Spinach in your fridge. We're not done yet, still trading our draft choices for FA's with injury history, has been players that at one time may have been good players but injuries have mared their careers, therefore we get them cheap. |

Re: Let's talk defense
i couldn't figure out if the boys o-line was that good or our d line was that bad.
i really hadn't ever watched Carter play for the 49ers. For a pretty athletic guy he looks really slow. Why did we get him? The only positive was Taylor had a great game. It seems he is finally getting some good recognition from the announcers like madden and michaels. |
