no sound from computer

I can't figure out what the heck is going on. I've got no sound whatsoever, but no device conflicts or problems in device manager. Nothing is muted, any suggestions?? I tried to do a system restore but it says nothing has changed. I haven't changed anything, the sound just went out of the blue.

Not trying to be a smart ass, but are you're speakers plugged in the the wall, the computer, and turned on?

I troubleshoot these things for a living, and you'd be surprised what is overlooked.

speakers have power? did the cable come out of the output socket in the back of your computer?

MTK 06-06-2006 06:19 PM

Re: no sound from computer

power is double checked and power light on the speakers is on. I unhooked everything too and hooked everything back up.

Re: no sound from computer

do you have a 2nd set of speakers to test? maybe the thing blew itself out or a wire came loose or some such...

Maybe you've just gone deaf. Let me remind you of the results of a study conducted by eminent psychologist Dr. Monk-Fan:

"The use of the drug Ecstasy has also been implicated in hearing damage. Ecstasy, and similar 'dance drugs', fuels the need to dance longer and at higher volumes. Furthermore, the analgesic qualities of the drug mean that loudness discomfort is blunted, further lengthening exposure times."

Might want to take that pacifier out of your mouth and stop going to those raves with JoeRedskin

On top of what others have already said...

- Headphones attached to the headphone jack?
- Is your sound muted within Windows? Make sure that Wave is not muted, also.
- Did you hit the mute button on your keyboard (if so equipped) accidentally?

Re: no sound from computer

yeah i thought that something was wrong with my sound too, until someone told me to check wave and i saw someone had messed with it. Anyways, maybe your speakers are dead, and you need to buy new ones.

-No headphones
-Sound is definitely not muted anywhere
-No mute button on the keyboard

Sound card or integrated on motherboard?

Umm I don't know.

I guess on the motherboard, it's not aftermarket or anything, just what came standard with my Dell Dimension 2400.

Re: no sound from computer

A common problem is it somehow gets muted. go into Start Programs -> accessories-> Entertainment
then click on audio. Make sure its not muted.

Matty, go to your Device Manager, right click on whatever the driver is for the audio, tell it to "uninstall" and then reboot.

If it reboots, and redetects the card, it should set it back to all default settings. If it detects it and it still doesn't work, there's some other things I'd consider. I'd also consider updating the BIOS using the files located on the Dell website.

Alright, tried that now I'm getting a question mark next to Multimedia Audio Controller in the device manager.

MTK 06-08-2006 09:08 AM

Re: no sound from computer

Now I'm having even worse problems, after 2 or 3 minutes after booting up everything freezes up.

cpayne5 06-08-2006 09:28 AM

Re: no sound from computer

I'd recommend backing everything up and doing a fresh Windows install.

What model is the machine? If it didn't redetect it and it previously had before, it sounds like there is definitely something wrong hardware-wise.

Yeah, Matty, have you checked the device manager for the yellow ?'s after a reboot?

TheMalcolmConnection 06-08-2006 09:35 AM

Re: no sound from computer

If you let us know the model, I'll find the driver and put a link directly on here so you can try reinstalling the driver. Freezes after bootup sound pretty bad, specifically if your sound card is onboard. I'm thinking maybe motherboard issues. :(

Yeah it's not there now

I'm throwing in the towel and calling a local computer repair guy today. Usually I can handle minor issues but this is obviously getting out of control.

Let's try one thing real quick. What model is it?
Let's try one thing real quick. What model is it?
Dell Dimension 2400

I've already tried multiple driver sets, and I used the recovery disks that came with the computer.

Re: no sound from computer

OK, one more thing. Look on the back of it and see if where you plug the sound card is like built into the motherboard or if it's in one of those slots more towards the bottom of the tower.

It's at the bottom on the right hand side as I'm looking at the back of the tower.

I'm pretty sure its onboard, TMC. Dell likes for everything to be on the board.

OK, install that and see if the yellow question mark goes away. It sounds like you have a PCI Sound Blaster installed.

True, but I just saw on the website when I was looking for drivers that his particular model had Soundblaster options.

I'll give it a try later today, thanks

I've got Soundblaster 5.1 if that means anything

Ah, yeah, sorry. I missed that option.

Pull the card and see if the freezing up stops. If it does, you can leave it out and turn the onboard audio on in the bios. It won't be 5.1, but it will be sound.

True enough. I forgot that since it's PCI you can remove it. That's a good call. If the card is malfunctioning, then it may not be motherboard related so much as it's just that card.

MTK 06-08-2006 01:44 PM

Re: no sound from computer

OK, I removed the sound card and everything seems to be running smooth. No freezing, no conflicts in the device mgr.

Is it safe to assume the problem was the card? How do I go about buying a new one, do I just buy the same one? Are there any compatibility issues I need to know about?

thanks guys

cpayne5 06-08-2006 02:15 PM

Re: no sound from computer

Does your motherboard have sound? If so, you can enable this in your bios, and you'll have sound. If not (or if you want 5.1 again), you can just buy a new soundcard and install it.

MTK 06-08-2006 02:21 PM

Re: no sound from computer

I enabled the sound in the bios but I'm still not hearing anything, board must not have sound I guess.

TheMalcolmConnection 06-08-2006 02:24 PM

Re: no sound from computer

It's conflicting with the you currently have. Try taking that card out of your computer if you are comfortable. AND if you see slots that'll fit a speaker connector on your motherboard, you should be good to go.

TheMalcolmConnection 06-08-2006 02:25 PM

Re: no sound from computer

Scratch what I said before. Saw that you already did that.

I'd just order a new one from newegg. I always trust their shipping and prices. I would also say it is safe to assume it was the card causing all the problems.

Re: no sound from computer

What I mean, is if it has another set of holes for mic/speakers like on this MB. It's between the monitor port and usb ports.

Did you plug in the speakers and enable the ports in the bios?
