83 Skins Rank #4 All Time

Actually CNN ranks 83 redskins offense fourth best in the last 25 years, NOT best of all time.

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/multimedia/photo_gallery/0605/gallery.bestoffense/content.7.html

"Joe Gibbs had already won a Super Bowl, but it was in '83 when he established himself as an offensive genius. The Skins scored 541 points, the second-highest total ever, and finished 14-2. Washington had an unstoppable power game with John Riggins and Joe Washington running behind one of the greatest offensive lines of all time. And the Redskins were dangerous in the air, with QB Joe Theismann throwing to Charlie Brown and Art Monk."

Where is the '91 team? I would have taken the '91 team over the '83 team.

Re: 83 Skins Rank #4 All Time

I loved that 1991 team. In 2 games that season against NFC divisional playoff opponent Atlanta the Redskins outscored the Falcons 80-24.
In 2 games that season against NFC championship opponent Detroit the redskins outscored the Lions 86-10. In 3 playoff games they scored 102 points. The O-line allowed 9 sacks all season long. Three playoff blowouts! Buffalo scored two late touchdowns to make that Super Bowl score somewhat respectable. Some of those teams in the top ten did not dominate the playoff competition anything like that 1991 Redskin team did. That offense was a Steamroller! IMO

Re: 83 Skins Rank #4 All Time

The '83 team scored a NFL record 541 points, a record that stood until 1998. If that team had won it all I think we're talking about one of the all-time great teams.

The '91 team scored 485 points in comparison.

The '91 team kicked major ace but I'm guessing the writers are trying to please as many different team's fans as possible.

Plus the '83 team had some ridiculous turnover ratio of +48 or something like that (though for the purposes of this poll it's only about the offense). And they lost two games by a combined 2 points.

I think you can argue that the '91 team overall was better because they won the whole thing, but that '83 offense was ridiculous.

It was a much diffferent game 75 years ago. For awhile, the league didn't even allow the forward pass.

Here's a little trivia for you. The number 6 team on this list is the 1981 San Diego Chargers coached by Don Coryell. Joe Gibbs helped build that team as O-coordinator up to the 1980 season. He was hired by the Redskins for the '81 season. For more on Gibbs' career, look here.

Re: 83 Skins Rank #4 All Time

I have been a skins fan since the mid 70's and the 1983 team is the best Redskins team I have ever seen. I have magazines from 1983 comparing the redskins to the 1970's Steelers leading up to Super Bowl XVIII. Had they not laid an egg that day in the super bowl we would be talking about one of the greatest teams in NFL History let alone Redskins history.

When You consider the 1983 teams greatness you also have to take into account that they played that year as defending champions which means that everyone was gunning for them. In spite of that they lost only 2 games by 1 point each and set a record for points scored that stood for 15 years. We saw how the pressure and complacency of a championship unraveled the other two Redskins title defenses. That was simply a great team...

If you are going to do a best of ,then do it from the begining.Just don't pick when you want .Pick the top 10 of all time from 1927,Jim Brown will show up in there some where.

Again why 25 ?

I don't know. Maybe it's just not as big a deal to me. 25 years, 35 years, 50 years. Whatever. It's just an arbitrary list subject to opinion

Maybe if it was a list of the top rushers then Jim Brown would show up, but really who else was on the browns offense other than Jim Brown? If you look at the article it was listed as the top offense not top offensive player...

even if it was all inclusive it would still be opinion. It's not a statistical list. Not like they're saying "Team A is number one because they score 600 points, Team B is number two because they scored 500 points, Team C 400" and so on

You make no sense at all, if you look at all the teams on the list, each team had atleast more than just one offensive weapon. The Browns just had Jim Brown. And that we do know, who else was on the Browns offense when Jim Brown carried the team, er the ball for the Browns? It is not like the future which we will never know how good Reggie Bush is or the great throwing arm of Vince Young those are unknown...

The league didn't start 25 years ago ,is Barry Bond chasing the all time home run record or the one in the last 25 years ?

And the Giants have never had a top five O....ever

You are right the league didn't start 25 years ago, but like someone stated earlier in this thread the game evolved and changed alot since it did start. Maybe they should have started from when the AFL and the NFL merged. Would that have ben better for you?

Also your example of Barry Bonds is just bad!! As to your half hearted attempt with Jim Brown. Again you need to be reminded that they are individuals not the whole offense or team. Againg if the list was top (insert individual contribution) then your examples of Jim Brown and Barry Bonds would fit.

As for "the Giants have never had a top five O....ever" I wouldn't know, but I would not be surprised if they didn't!!!!

It's like what your sig says. "I like people just fine. It's the morons that I don't care for." Well, for someone to be arguing about 25 years vs. who the hell cares, that's just simply "moronic." Mr. Giantone, you are simply a moron. Bash me all you want, I won't respond because there is no point, to me you are wall, nothing sinks in, it just bounces right off.

Just because.

We didn't make the stupid list so bitch to us about its validity. The list pertains to the best offenses of the last 25 years. Plain and simple. Just because you think another opinionative metric would be more interesting doesn't mean the list is worthless. It is what it is. Sell crazy somewhere else.

The '91 team blew out more teams, but they didn't score even close to 541 points. So, it seems as though the competition was tougher in '83.
