e3 happenings...
I don't know how many of you follow e3, but i've looked through all the videos (go to www.ign.com or any other gaming site), an found these titles pretty impressive right now:
Spore (which blows everything away) battlefield 2142 (future mechs and tanks, oh my) Halo 3 (no surprise there) Metal Gear Solid 4 (they do cinematic trailers better than anyone) Crysis (sequel to FarCry) for the wii (nintendo): mario galaxy (mario works so much better than sonic in 3d :( ) smash brothers (featuring samus (metroid) and snake (metal gear solid)) --- snake even comes with a cardboard box and nintendogs appear on the screen as well If you have time check out the Spore e3 demo, Halo 3 trailer, and new smash brothers trailer. Those are the best 3, though the metal gear trailer is also very good, and you can tell by the gameplay footage that the new mario and crysis are going to be worth checking out. anyone else see something that caught their eye? there's some madden 2007 stuff, but no extensive video on the new features yet (not that lead blocking i going to make a very compelling video anyways). |
Re: e3 happenings...
I'd still take 3D Sonic over most of the crap being made today.
|
Re: e3 happenings...
*Spore looked absolutely insane.
*My top 3 things shown @ this years E3 were Zelda: Twilight Princess, Ninety-Nine Nights, and my absolute number 1 has to be Gears of War with an honorable mention going to Capcom's Lost Planet. *Assasins Creed looked awesome and I'm a huge fan of the Prince of Persia titles and the fact that it loosely involves the Crusades has grabbed my attention. *Dead Rising looked so much better this year than last and Enchanted Arms looks like it could give Final Fantasy a bit of a run for it's money graphically. *Resistance:Fall of Man and Eight Days were the only PS3 titles that caught my attention. *Anything Crytek does is gorgeous so I gotta upgrade my comp for that one. *Super Smash Bros Brawl is gonna probably the most fun game to play with the Nintendo Wii. *DOA Ultimate Volleyball has independent boob jigglage ;) *Hellgate London looks sweet as hell and hopefully the old Diablo team can pull off their FPS/RPG. *Spiderman 3's character model looks almost exactly like the movie's cg version. *Lemmings, Valkerie Profile, Ultimate Ghosts and Goblins, Field Commander, Online Chess Kingdoms and Ratchet and Clank r games that might convince me not to sell my PSP. *The new Indiana Jones game looks like its gonna be full as hell to play. *And last but not least Sonic for the 360 & PS3 looked incredible and looks to bring back Sonic from it's recent trail of crappy titles. |

Re: e3 happenings...
the speaker in the wii remote = more awesome ;)
hellgate london looked amazing last e3, so far the gameplay vids this year make it look like a very boring diablo clone :/ gears of war is an unreal based game, and with unreal 3 due out soon, i rather just wait for that ;) |
Re: e3 happenings...
wow, warhawk reminds me of airquake... looks nice.
lost planet also looks great, been awhile since the last good mech game... though it reminds me more of battletech than mechwarrior (some game released after mechwarrior 2 where you could get out on foot and also steal mechs). enchanted arms just looks like another FF clone. good GFX, but repeating the same crappy story for the 100th time. I wish assassin's creed had a gameplay video instead of just a pre-rendered trailer.... |

I was into rainbow 6 3 the original on xbox live and then the next one came out and I liked it for a while but it died out on me. That game was amazing though online because you would have your team and you all were against the other team and it was tactical. Halo 2 online was great being able to play 16 players and not all in the same dirty basement facing different TVs. This is the next step of Xbox live, live anywhere. I think all the stuff at E3 is more impressive this year than last year and I think that I'll get back into it. I just hope someone in my dorm can afford this stuff. I still haven't even got a real chance to play 360, i hope all three are somewhere near by next year for me. |

HAHAHAHAHA!
yeah, SSBB looks like its the clear #1 in terms of gameplay. Too bad I won't be spending $250-500 on a console. mario galaxy looks great too. |
Re: e3 happenings...
I hate how you basically have to bend over when you want to get the newest generation game consoles. I'm JUST NOW getting my own PS2.
|
Re: e3 happenings...
PC only here. every 3-4 years i get a $500 computer and a $50-110 gfx card. If I had unlimited funds i'd consider it, but i don't.
|
Re: e3 happenings...
See, I CANNOT stand the process of rebuilding a new machine. I know you can normally plug and play the hard drive into the machine but I prefer a clean install and that takes me like 2 weeks working on it 2-3 hours a day to get it back into the condition that I HAD it in. Not only that, I want to have the best graphics card because I feel like a bitch when I have to play my games on average settings.

Re: e3 happenings...
Well, Sony pretty much flopped at this years E3 with their $600 price tag. Nintendo did well with the Wii and M$oft was probably the best one at the show this year as they continue to gobble up market share with at least a year lead time on Sony in the next gen race.
M$oft is now starting to tie in Windows, Xbox, mobile, etc...with some pretty sick ideas. Not too mention they did land Grand Theft Auto IV for the X360 in 2007 to go along with Halo 3. |
Re: e3 happenings...
I really have lost almost all interest in video games. I use to spend hordes of cash on upgrading my PC every two years or so. Now, well, I don't even have Windows installed on my home machine. About the only console games I ever play are NFL 2k5 & NBA Live. I don't know why I lost interest though I suspect the non-existence of worthy games and having something else to do with my free time has something to do with it. It's all boring really.

If they are pricing the games at $69+ I would be more worried. You're also getting a next generation DVD player too (here is to Sony winning the DVD Wars). |
Re: e3 happenings...
If they don't win though, you've just invested a lot of money in a dead technology. I'll cross my fingers for anyone who buys a PS3.
|
Re: e3 happenings...
I have an X360, so I won't be getting a PS3 unless they start to show me some online gaming capabilities and Blu Ray does take off. Personally I don't think Sony can match the online play that M$oft already has in place and will never catch up. M$oft is really putting the resources in the xbox 360 and the online platform this year and for the foreseeable future...Sony could be in some trouble in this gen of gaming, but certainly will fight back in the next gen 4-5 years from now.

Re: e3 happenings...
I am going to go play video games right now, this thread has made me want to play.
|
Re: e3 happenings...
Do you think that games are ever going to "hit the wall" in how realistic they can get?
|
Re: e3 happenings...
Do you think that games are ever going to "hit the wall" in how realistic they can get?
your the resident "playa", what do YOU think?
|
Re: e3 happenings...
Until I can actually pimp out the girls in games, it's not realistic enough.
On a serious note, games are basically going to be "movies" that you play. |
Re: e3 happenings...
no, but the improvements will be less and less noticeable.
right now physics are getting the big push, maybe lighting and audio will be the next thing to work on. |
Re: e3 happenings...
I want to be in the game. You should be able to walk into a room and you run through the game and can pick up shit and do whatever. Maybe with some virtual reality goggles on your head or something.
|
Re: e3 happenings...
I'm hoping lighting. For me, that's the thing that's most noticable that I'm playing "a game". The audio is pretty good for me and I'm loving these THX-certified games.

You're speaking of my broken dreams. When I was like 10, I was thinking how cool it would be to have a game that was basically the entire world. Like a collaborative project where say a whole state films footage of basically every square inch of it. The project would be the biggest undertaking in history, but make it where EVERYTHING is interactive and you truly can "live your own paht" like in Fable. I remember I thought the game was something called "One Wish" when I came up with it. Like you had one wish (the wish had some limitations) and then you could live your life in first person view, interacting with all people and objects in the game. You could accelerate your life by 10x, 100x, or END and see where you finish. Like you could rob a bank in your home town and see if you could get away with it. I honestly can see AI eventually going there. It's far-fetched, but honestly I don't think it's THAT far-fetched. |

The potential for a game like that is there eventually, but think of the monthly cost for a game like that online. It's Fable meets the Sims! |
Re: e3 happenings...
sonic in 3d just isn't that great :( in 3d, the engine has to pump out polygons for huge levels to allow for the speed sonic needs, and unlike in 2d, in 3d its VERY eassy to go slightly off of the intended route and (with the speed multiplying that error) end up way off from where you should be.
|
Re: e3 happenings...
you can get in the game right now. CAVE evironments have been around a long time and can be very quick... in addition, goggles (both with monitor lenses or lasers that overlay a GUI over your RL vision) and motion sensors also work right now.
real life quake has been around since 1998 or so (q1 engine, but you can move around your RL city with your plastic gun). ISU is putting up a $4mill CAVE environment (upgrading the old one) starting this summer (super high def in ALL directions, you literally walk into a room and the floor/ceiling/walls are the monitors. they also have mist/fog based 3d displays you can use for true 3-d imaging (as well as holograms, but those are too limited to be useful). in 2004 at e3 they had goggles and motion sensors for sword duels (with broomsticks)... people kept getting too into it and snapping the "swords" though (against walls and the ground on accident). |
Re: e3 happenings...
i don't just mean goggles, i mean i have to be able to pick up stuff in the game with my hand and think it is in my hand, i don't care if I have to wear a body suit that makes me feel everything.
I think that a stripper game would sell well... |
Thought this was really interesting:
http://news.punchjump.com/article.php?id=2458
and actually either Ign or Gamespot had a small article about a game being designed for the ps3 that might also be going to the 360 was actually being played on a covered up 360 with a 3rd party PS3 controller plugged in through a usb port. and numerous game designers have said while the PS3 has the higher possible graphics, the 360 is much easier to design for because of how the software has to be divided up and have programs written for each and every little thing on the PS3's cell processor. it's going to be interesting if the risks sony is taking pays off cuz the 360 has a full year head start with quite a few awesome titles already out with more coming out later this year and Nintendo has a lot of positive buzz that might help it make a run at the top again or atleast be respectable in the home console war. and sonic comes out around the 2nd or 3rd week of November. http://www.gamespot.com/xbox360/action/sonicthehedgehog/media.html |
Re: e3 happenings...
MS releasing early was the best move they could make. Its much easier for them to launch new consoles ince they're very close to PC architecture, and that also makes them easier to design for.
as for sony, they always pull lame tricks like that at e3. usually they run pre-rendered cgi and call it "actual gameplay." actually runnning their demos on a hidden 360 is pretty funny though. |
