And the idiot of the year award goes to............
Former Redskins and current Teaxans GM Charlie Casserly.
We all remember Charlie Casserly for how he built the mighty Redskins dynasty of the 90's with marque franchise players like Heath Schuler and Michael Westbrook. Now Casserly is helping the Texans establish the same type of dominance that he built with the Redskins throughout the 90's. Let it be told that Ralph Wilson almost took the award but with passing up on Reggie Bush considering all the money he would have brought and the games he would have won we had to give the award to good old Charlie. I mean lets look at the other succesful D-Lineman selected first overall. Future Hall-of-Famers like Dan Wilkinson, Courtney Brown, Steve Emtman, and Russell Maryland. Congrads Charlie...You earned it. |
Re: And the idiot of the year award goes to............
I now know why there are steals in the draft, b/c GM's fall in love with prospects and reach for them and then claim their an authority on picking players. The reason theres so many 1st round busts is not b/c prospects are misevaluated, but because guys like Jason Babin are reached for in the first round. Then guys like Jason Witten and Lofa Tatupu fall to the second and third round and are considered steals. These guys really drive me crazy.

I actually thought Westbrook was a good pick if he could have stayed out of rehab and off of Stephen Davis, he was the best WR coming out in 95 |

Everbody looks at the kick that never was. The big play was a bad pass that may have been a TD and would have gotten the team in a place to kick a short FG. Theat could have been that Super Bowl that got away! |

Re: And the idiot of the year award goes to............
I don't think it's fair to call him an idiot. While I'm not high on Reggie Bush, I can see his appeal for many teams. And let's look at the facts, in the era of the salary cap you have to be carefull with #1 overall picks, because they demand a lot of money and you need to keep from handcuffing yourself. They offered a 6 year 54Mil deal to both players, Reggie Bush turned it down, Williams took it. This means that they PROBABLY wouldn't of had a contract done with Bush when they drafted him, and Williams will be in camp from day one. Which in my opinion, is just huge.
Yeah, the Texans might have drafted a Courtney Brown, but they might have also drafted a Bruce Smith. If you go through a list of #1 overall picks, about 3/4 seem to have done nothing in this league. So really it's a crap shoot anyways. Lets wait a little while before crucifying the guy. |

Re: And the idiot of the year award goes to............
Personally I agree with the Texans's choice here. They don't need a RB, they need defensive playmakers. Bush is a part-time situational player in the NFL in my opinion. Williams will be in on every defensive play and instantly makes the Texans defensive line better. Maybe they should have traded down a spot or two......that I'll concede, but I think they made the right move here. Of course, I've never been sold on Bush translating to the NFL, so to me, Williams was the better prospect between the two without even considering the Texans's needs.
If I give an award for the dumbest move, I give it to the Saints. With Duece McAllister in the backfield already, and a significant need for a OT, I think they were foolish to get caught up in all the Bush-hype. A trade down with the Jets and then taking Ferguson would have been a better move in my opinion. |
Re: And the idiot of the year award goes to............
Yeah, I agree with the choice too. Even though I still say they should have traded down, they might not have found a partner (except maybe the Jets).

Re: And the idiot of the year award goes to............
Ah, well...
I'll just have to be dumber next year. Maybe I'll start the April Fool's joke in February... |
Re: And the idiot of the year award goes to............
I thought the pick showed intelligence and restraint. I think too many fans and commentators get caught up in the celebrity of different players and mistake it for value. For me, I'd rather pass on the stars and find those hard-working, gutsy, good-in-the-trenches kind of guys. Not to say that Bush doesn't have talent, but I think Casserly made a wise choice here. (No comment on the wisdom of the Westbrook choice.)

On a side note, did everyone enjoy the collective blowfest of the top three picks? During the WHOLE draft, all we got to see was footage of Bush, Williams and Brick.

A trade with them and the Jets should have been orchestrated. The Jets needed Bush, they needed Brick. |

Personally I just hate how as soon as you hit the 2nd round, ESPN feels the need to keep recapping the first round over and over again. Then through the whole rest of the draft you're forced to try to play catch up as the players get announced in the background and you have to keep watching a bottom-line ticker to follow what's going on while 15 different people have to comment on what already happened 4 hours ago. For me, I'd rather them just keep current on each pick through at least the first day of the draft and show us film and pluses and minuses of each pick as they happen. I guess they think that only the first round guys can keep America interested, but for those of us who really know football and want to get introduced to every player who gets picked, it's frustrating. Ok, that's my rant for the day. |
Re: And the idiot of the year award goes to............
Seriously though. I mean they were STILL on their knees over Leinhart WAY late in the draft.

I don't think Casserly is any good either but you can't lay this decision on him really. As for those who think it was a good move. You do not pass on a guy universally regarded as the best player to come out of the draft in years. You do not draft a guy who had an ABOVE AVERAGE college career because he looks big and is fast. At the very least if you think you can get by on passing on Bush you HAVE to find a trade partner. It is called getting value out their pick. They drafted a guy who was not worthy of the first pick with the first pick. That is how you don't do it. You trade back and get some value. If they need defense help anyways Hawk is a safer bet. I gurantee they could have traded to 4 and picked Hawk. The market deteremines what a pick kis worth and they misspent theirs. |

--Phin
Maybe so, but when you consider the fact that 15,000 to 20,000 people that had already purchased tickets didn't show up to the games last year, than you have to take a long hard look at the amount of money forfeited in $5 hot dogs and overpriced team apparel. Yes, the Texans are a high revenue team but they are not on the same level as storied franchises like the Redskins and Packers who have fans that will show up no matter what. Back in Atlanta there use to be a fan that went to every Falcons game and as a result he usually had extra tickets. So to be nice he would leave the extra tickets on his windshield and when he came back to his car after the game he found that other people had left their tickets too. Today you gotta pay way above face value or have some good connections to get Falcons tickets. Remember the Oilers didn't move b/c they were making too much money. Plus I gotta say I don't agree with Mario Williams being picked #1 overall. I mean 11 sacks in 23 games???? with Manny Lawson and John McCargo on the same line!!!! If this guy is lucky he'll be as good as Trevor Pryce. And how is he getting Julius Pepers comparrions? Peppers had 24.5 sacks in his final two seasons of collegiate football with a line that wasn't nearly as dominant. And you say they already have a running back. I mean I love Dominick Davis as much of the next guy, late round pick that paid his dues but hes not exactly durable and last year he was the Texans offense. All in all its like asking the Texans if they would rather have Trevor Pryce or L. Tomlinson. |
Re: And the idiot of the year award goes to............
Charley is a pile.
In November 93, Richie Pettibone was struggling in his first year as head coach. Charlie meets Norv at midfield prior to Cowboys v Redskins game to discuss coming to the Skins. A heinous crime. Charlie, for this reason, eeks out Norv as the worst person in Redskins history. |

From what I heard, almost every team had Bush and Williams 1 and 2 in some order, so I'm not so sure most people in the NFL would agree that Williams was only above average. I'll agree with you that they should have traded out of the pick, but you don't really know who they would have traded with. If it's the Saints, how much are they really going to get? If you trade with anyone other than the Saints, how do you know that the Saints won't pick Williams at #2? Then you don't have Bush, and you don't have Williams. I suppose they could still take Brick (which, I would actually call a great move if they were able to trade down to 4 and get him), but if you're really sold on Williams (as a lot of teams were), then you have to get your guy. At the end of the day, I don't think we can criticize all that much for the Texans taking a player maybe one position ahead of where he was projected. |

I'd be willing to bet Bush will never come close to being the back that L.T. is. |
Re: And the idiot of the year award goes to............
I concur. Bush played on an all-star team. You see how many USC players got taken in the first two rounds?
|
Re: And the idiot of the year award goes to............
And every time he touched the ball he had fresh legs. I mean, if he's really THAT special, then why did USC give the ball to Lendell White more than Reggie Bush? If the Texans deserve the idiot award, then what about USC? They had the allegedly best college football player to come along since God-knows-when.......yet they didn't give him the ball on every play? Or even a majority of their running plays? Doesn't make sense to me.

U cant consider USC an ALLstar tam if they didnt have Reggie Bush,,without Bush they would have sucked,,everytime they needed Offense(BLING) REGGIE BUSH. I had season tickets to the USC games, if bush wasnt there I couldnt have given them away. MS |

MS
Again, if he was so incredible, why wasn't he their primary RB? Why wasn't he in on every play? |
Re: And the idiot of the year award goes to............
I'll go on record to say the Texans made a mistake in my opinion. When you have a chance to pick up a game changing RB (potentially), you gotta do it. Especially if you are the Texans. It changes their whole offense. They've made some upgrades to their line, they have some good WR's, and to add a Reggie Bush to the mix would instantly upgrade their offense. Teams would have to honor someone that could take it the distance from 80 yards out which would open up the field for everyone. Not to mention boost ticket/merchandise sales for their business.
Not to say that Williams won't be good but its much more of a risk taking an DE. Look at history. |
Re: And the idiot of the year award goes to............
I heard charlie on the radio this moring,in fairness to him, this pick sounds more like this was kubiacks descision, when asked about trading down he said they had absolutely no offers at all to trade out of the pick, they contacted the jets and the jets werent interested, williams was the guy they wanted so they had to take him 1st because there were no trading partners
|
Re: And the idiot of the year award goes to............
bush was drafted on production, williams was drafted on potential.
the texans felt they had a PB returner, a good RB that can catch and 2 #1 WRs. I think bush should have been the pick anyways, but they decided williams would be a bigger improvement over what they already had. the best WRs this draft were bush (all around) and vernon davis (not good on deep balls). |
Re: And the idiot of the year award goes to............
Mario Williams was a way better choice than Reggie Bush. They didn't need Bush at all. RB is probably their best position, except for maybe WR. Domanick Davis is mad good and he is probably better than Bush. He wouldn't have really helped their offense. Reggie Bush will be another Brian Westbrook...yeah I said it.

The Washington Redskins, George Rogers. |

and had under 20 carries in 19 more. |
Re: And the idiot of the year award goes to............
The only two reasons people have for reggie bush to not be good is that he played on USC and he wasn't the number one runningback. Every Miami team has plenty of players that enter the first couple rounds and are still very good in the NFL i.e. Sean Taylor, Santana Moss, Clinton Portis, and Edge are just a few examples. But for the people who say he wasnt the numebr one runningback he had 200 carries while White had 3 less over last season and had 400 more yards but 8 less TDs. Bush also had 20 more catches plus the punt return duties where he did a dante hall worthy job. And either ESPN doesnt record fumbles for them or neither of them have ever had a fumble too which would be really amazing.

Re: And the idiot of the year award goes to............
Which is why they should have drafted D'Brickashaw Ferguson.
Well with that they could have easily traded down with the Jets or Saints and still gotten the Brick. After the Ditka fiasco I don't think anyone will pay more than what the Giants paid for Eli Manning in regards to getting the #1 overall pick. However cudos to the Jets. I wanted to just laugh at them for passing on Leinart but in seeing that they added Mangold to boot it shows that they have a plan and a direction. I said it before, in 3 years the Jets will have the best O-line in the NFL. . All they need is to draft 2 solid prospects next year and add a marquee FA and bam, anyone they stick in their backfield will rush for 1200 yards with at least a 4.0 average. |
