slobby P says bet the house: Archuleta and Carter will be Skins
Bet the mortgage that, by the end of the weekend, the Redskins will have added St. Louis strong safety Adam Archuleta (the relationship between agent Gary Wichard and personnel chief Vinny Cerrato won't hurt on this one) and San Francisco end Andre Carter to an already solid defense, one that statistically ranked No. 9 in the league in 2005.
Carter, who has started at end in the 4-3 and rush linebacker in a 3-4, will provide the Redskins the consistent upfield pass rusher they have been missing. Under brilliant coordinator Gregg Williams, one of the NFL's most creative defensive minds, Archuleta should dramatically upgrade his game. Archuleta is a liability when playing in space, but he could become a player in the mold of Pittsburgh safety Troy Polamalu, with a bit less speed. Archuleta can be explosive over a short area, although he doesn't have Polamalu's range, and Williams will conjure up ways to move him around close to the line of scrimmage. The Redskins picked up one of their targeted players Saturday when they traded with the 49ers for receiver Brandon Lloyd. The Skins gave up their third-round pick this year and their fourth-round selection in 2007. |
Re: slobby P says bet the house: Archuleta and Carter will be Skins
I love the addition of Andre Carter, if it does happen. I've been screaming about a pass rushing DE for like the last 4 years. He would bring a whole different dimension to the D. He can consistently get up the field to rush the passer. I don't care what side they put him on, he's going to be a huge upgrade over Renaldo Wynn or Phillip Daniels. Hopefully, if they put him on the right, they'll move Daniels to the left side.
As for Archuleta, I'm not sold, but if Williams is, then I'll wait and see. If he comes in and steps up his game I'll be really pleased. If they turn him into Troy Polamalu I'll love that guy. I think that the Skins should still strongly consider keeping Omar Stoutmire and Ryan Clark because who knows what's gonna happen with ST. |
Re: slobby P says bet the house: Archuleta and Carter will be Skins
I have to agree I'm a little nervous about archuleta. I'm still nervous about him in coverage. I guess if GW wants him he must feel like he can utilize him well.

Re: slobby P says bet the house: Archuleta and Carter will be Skins
I think Carter could come right in and have the same immediate impact that Marcus Washington had when he arrived
|
Re: slobby P says bet the house: Archuleta and Carter will be Skins
Im just thinking about the idea of Adam Archuleta and Sean Taylor in the secondary with Andre Carter, Corneilius Griffin and Philip Daniels on the D-line. And I guess our linebackers are pretty good too. This should be a lights out defense.

Re: slobby P says bet the house: Archuleta and Carter will be Skins
Do you have a link for this?
|
Re: slobby P says bet the house: Archuleta and Carter will be Skins
I agree. I think the Skins should look into Witherspoon and Peterson to fill the hole on the weakside. However, even if we end up plugging in a rookie or low priced vet not named Warrick Holdman I think we'll be fine.
|
Re: slobby P says bet the house: Archuleta and Carter will be Skins
I'm warming up to the idea of Archuleta. The more I read about him the more I like. Fast, big hitter, plays with passion, sounds like a Gregg Williams kinda guy!
That would be a pretty formidable defensive backfield, ST and AA laying monster shots... I can see WRs cringing and alligator-arming balls as I speak. |
Re: slobby P says bet the house: Archuleta and Carter will be Skins
Sorry Matty but I've gotta disagree completely. Even though Archuleta may be talented, I'd prefer Ryan Clark since he's probably considerably cheaper. Clark is a younger player who has been with the team, and whereas Archuleta has been over-hyped and underachieving the last couple of years, Clark has been a total overachiever. I can't see any reason why the 'Skins are not making a stronger effort to re-sign Clark. :frusty:
|
Re: slobby P says bet the house: Archuleta and Carter will be Skins
Archuleta is clearly the more talented safety over Clark, that's not even debateable. In Williams' hands he could really develop into a monster. Just wait and see. Look at what happened with C-Griff, career underachiever with the Giants... sound familiar?
|
Re: slobby P says bet the house: Archuleta and Carter will be Skins
Maybe you think Clark is cheaper but may Clark doesn't thinks he's cheap!
Thats why they haven't signed him probably, he think he deserves a big contract and the Skins disagree on the size of it. Archuleta is probably going be cheaper |

I not so much about Archuleta IF Taylor is back there! But I am getting a bad feeling that we may not have Taylor in 06! If Taylor troubles become the Redskins and Archuleta ia the main stay back there We need a back up plan!!!!!!!!! Resign Clark or someone else!!!! Carter will be big in GW defense and I really hope he signs!!! |
Re: slobby P says bet the house: Archuleta and Carter will be Skins
There are some decent safeties in the draft. I just thought Bowen didn't fit into Coach Williams' scheme. So why would Archuleta?

Why pay more money for only slight improvement? Clark did a pretty solid job the last two years; we have other bigger needs. |
Re: slobby P says bet the house: Archuleta and Carter will be Skins
I think we wouldn't be going after Archuleta if Seany boy didnt thug it up last year. But now we need insurance.

Re: slobby P says bet the house: Archuleta and Carter will be Skins
Dear god, please let Sean Taylor play this year. fingers crossed.

God just might need to help Taylor out!!!! Taylor troubles are not good. I just think we need a back up plan here big time!!! |

we've got one serious draft pick and bigger needs at both CB and quality OL backup. |
Re: slobby P says bet the house: Archuleta and Carter will be Skins
Witherspoon signed with the Rams today.....Petetson is still out there.......I love Akin Ayodele but he looks to be going to Dallas.

Carter left Redskins Park today without sigining anything.

i dont think we have the money to move on a big name LB. the money for carter, the WRs and archuleta would be most of our space. |

Two reasons, size & size. I think he want's more money than we're willing to pay, and two, I think we want more size at the SS position. Clark is not a very big guy and I think we're looking to get a little more physical at that position. Remember the LT TD run in overtime of the SD game last year? Clark is still saying he should have made that tackle three yards in the secondary. |

Uh oh That doesn't happen too often. |
Re: slobby P says bet the house: Archuleta and Carter will be Skins
If the Bears snag Archuletta, who else is out there really? What about Charles Woodson? He might be worth signing since he can play the safety position as well as the nickel spot.

Slight improvement? Archuleta is much more than just a slight improvement over Clark, let's get real. Plus he's a good insurance policy for Taylor. |

Re: slobby P says bet the house: Archuleta and Carter will be Skins
Slight improvement?
Archuleta is much more than just a slight improvement over Clark, let's get real. Plus he's a good insurance policy for Taylor.
Here are last year's stats: Archuleta: In 14 games--70 tackles, 17 assists, 3.5 sacks, 1 int for 85 yds TD, 2 passes defensed Clark: In 13 games--57 tackles, 15 assists, 0.5 sacks, 3 int for 10 yds, 2 passes defensed It would seem from the evidence that Archuleta is better in run support and less effective in pass coverage (based on stats alone). I realize, however, that stats can be misleading. Yes, Archuleta has more talent, but talent (as we have seen with Heisman Trophy winners) isn't everything. Let's also not forget that a big reason Archuleta's tackles are higher than Clark's may have something to do with the Rams' pitiful run defense, which forced him to make more tackles since their front seven couldn't do it. Again, I'm not saying I dislike Archuleta; he should end up helping the team. I'm just afraid that we're screwing one of our own and possibly hurting some team cohesion. |
Re: slobby P says bet the house: Archuleta and Carter will be Skins
Losing Clark isn't going to cost us any team cohesion in my opinion, I think alot of people are really overvalueing Clark.
Archuleta is clearly more talented and as we've seen, one of GW's strengths is getting the maximum from his players. I think Archuleta could really blow up under GW. |
Re: slobby P says bet the house: Archuleta and Carter will be Skins
I hope you're right, but I'm also afraid we are screwing Clark. Nothing against Archuleta, but I'm hoping we didn't overpay him only to end up losing Clark in the process.
|
Re: slobby P says bet the house: Archuleta and Carter will be Skins
Personally I don't understand the lovefest for Ryan Clark.
Decent player, overachiever, solid guy. I'm not hating I just don't think he's anything special. Archuleta is by far the more talented player and has much more upside and could really blossom under Gregg Williams. He is potentially a special player. |
Re: slobby P says bet the house: Archuleta and Carter will be Skins
Okay, lets stop throwing the hugs and kisses in Archuleta's way. Unfortunately I live in St. Louis. I've seen this guy play every week since he has been a Ram. I'm not overly impressed. He is a hard hitter. A good blitzing safety. Has poor closing speed and coverage ability. Williams must plan on using him as a roverback (half linebacker/half safety). He would do well there. As a strong safety, he would be a liability in pass coverage, just like Matt Bowen.
