Washington –It certainly wasn’t a pretty day from Kirk Cousins (-4.7). His accuracy down the field was night and day from the quarterback we’ve seen the past few weeks. On passes targeted between 10-20 yards down the field, Cousins was only 2-of-10 passing for 36 yards. Green Bay forced check down after check down from Cousins and continually made the play. 17 of Cousins 29 completions came between the numbers and within 10 yards of the line of scrimmage.
Gotta remember, Green Bay pass defense has been great all year. Capers secondary looks have confused good QB and their pass rush is decent. You counter that pounding the ball... |
Re: Cousins has arrived
i think we were out coached on both sides of the ball and our guys werent prepared for what they saw. coaches are pretty green as well.
i really look forward to hearing and reading cooley/bullock and cos. film breakdown bc from the TV view you just couldnt see what was happening down field but it looked like kirk just couldnt find any open receivers sans Reed in the middle who kirk seemed to force the ball to at times. Reed - 9 catches 17 targets garcon - 5 catches 8 targets jackson - 2 catches 5 targets my opinion - we got out coached and tried to force our offensive approach instead of game planning to attack the GB weaknesses. |
Cousins has arrived
I think we need to chill on the contract situation. Yes he's going to be looking for a nice deal, but to be paid like a top 5 guy you need a more complete resume. The team does have some leverage to bring to the negotiating table. So let's not assume he's going to take us to the cleaners. I think both sides want it to work and will find some common ground.

He deserves top 15 money rite now due to the limited resume. Though i do believe he is a top 10 guy rite now. Edit: Also if he gets a better offer somewhere and we do not tag him he should take it. I would hold nothing against him. Its a career for him. We would all leave our current employer rite now for a similar job and a substantial pay raise. Just because nobody roots for me at work doesnt really matter. Lol |

If kirk wasn't on the redskins every single skins fan would be saying "I wish we had kirk cousins that guy is good"

Oh he would be the hottest thing since the Macarena! It's understandable that after our laundry list of qb's who did not pan out over the last 20 years that folks are hesitant but my goodness what else can he show us in this short time? |

I think it depends on the agent. If he's got a flashy guy like Drew Rosenhaus it might be more difficult than somebody who's more willing to work with the team. |

Re: Cousins has arrived
Was not his sharpest of games by any means. But it was good enough for the win had the defense not played like a sieve. Couple that with a terrible attempt by Djax at getting the damn ball in the endzone and a missed extra point - and you have a loss. Those 5 points early would have changed some things....The bottom line is that with half of a better effort by our defense and run game Cousins played well enough for us to beat a very experienced playoff team.
I agree with some of this. However; good enough to win a regular season game is different from a playoff game. Lets not forget that delay of game also played a role in not scoring on the goaline. And Alf was churning out 4.5 yards a clip. Its not all on Kirk but a bad game is a bad game. Shrugs.

Re: Cousins has arrived
Was anyone listening to the sports fix this afternoon? They were asking people if they thought Griffin was going to come back to haunt the Skins.. It was amazing how racial the discussion turned. Not that I want to go down this road, but I just can't believe in 2016 so many people are so divided about 2 QB's because of race.

Re: Cousins has arrived
Where does Colt McCoy fit into all of this?
Is he gone next year? Are we going to have two new QBs at the start of pre season? |

Re: Cousins has arrived
I think McCoy comes back and someone is drafted.
|
Re: Cousins has arrived
I think Mccoy comes back and we get some other journeymen type vet for depth. Please do not waste a pick on a project just yet unless it is some extreme talent who is there when they shouldnt be. We need to build a team around Cousins and win with him now. We can worry about his heir apparent when the time comes.

I am fine with also drafting a QB with promise, to develop him. |

Draft a QB?
No.... UDFA? Yes... Jake Rudock - Michigan Wolverines - 2016 Player Profile - Rotoworld.com |

Colt is a good backup. I'd like to see them draft a QB late like 7th round or something maybe to develop

Or do you think they stick with Kirk next year no matter what? What i want to see is the team have patience with KC. I know Jay Gruden will to a point, but i still worry about un-needed extra crap on the team. I think it should be KC, then McCoy as backup, then if they absolutely must have a 3rd string guy, bring in an old veteran guy like Matt Hasselbeck or someone like that who can still go for a game or two if absolutely needed |

If you give KC big money, he's not going to be looking over his shoulder with a late round or undrafted QB. They stuck by him all this year, why would that change? Come on now. And if you have McCoy, you don't need Hasslebeck. |

Re: Cousins has arrived
Seems like a waste to me, usual setup is a 3rd stringer is inactive. You don't need a vet for that.

100% imo whoever the rogue third string body is he would be inactive. I mean u cannot gameplan on losing two qb's in the same game. I just think the bigger waste would be a pick when we need to win now and win thru the draft. I think i just have so much faith in SM that I think he can pluck 7 contributors out of one draft. Lol. Hey like i said if there is some qb sitting there at any spot and it is absolutely shocking he is still there than snatch him up. Im with Snake though I dont want to mess with KC's psyche even though I think it is strong. He just went thru so much with Griff n the pressure of proving himself to the organization. Whatever happens I got faith in this FO and staff though. |
Re: Cousins has arrived
I wouldn't draft one either. UDFA all the way.
If you don't pay Kirk a 4yr/85-90mil contract .
Correction on this. I meant to put 5yr/85-90mil. Kirk definitely isn't in a position yet to demand 20+mil a year. I think the contract hits about 17-18mil/yr with us being able to get out after that second year. (if it's structured properly) |
Re: Cousins has arrived

Jake Rudock seems like a good UDFA QB we could stash and develop. I am fully confident in Kirk but you always want to be working for the future. And it doesn't hurt that his HC is Harbaugh. |

I dont think he should take any less then the franchise tag. So anything under 19 would be foolish to take if I was his agent. |
Re: Cousins has arrived
I dont think he should take any less then the franchise tag. So anything under 19 would be foolish to take if I was his agent.
I think he might well take less than the tag amount depending on the amount of guaranteed money. Anything could happen in the future, so the guaranteed amount is an important consideration. The only possible disaster for the Redskins in their negotiations with Kirk and his agent would be for the Skins to be forced to tag him. In that event, the Skins would not be able to manage around the $19.5MM cap hit. As a fan, I don't really care how much the Redskins pay him as long as it is structured to allow enough cap space to give Scot M. the flexibility he needs to continue building the team. If Kirk cares about winning, and I'm sure he does, he'll cooperate with the Redskins in structuring the deal. |
Re: Cousins has arrived
The tag isn't a starting off point for negotiations. A long term deal is always the goal for the player. More money, more security.

I kind of agree here. Our draft picks need to be guys that can contribute right away. |

Re: Cousins has arrived
BPA every pick, every round.
I'm not necessarily a BPA proponent yet, based on where we are right now as a team, that might be the way to go in this draft. Any pressing needs could be addressed in FA prior to the draft. |
Re: Cousins has arrived
Man, I tell you, in years past, while our offense was on the field, I'd be watching with clinched butt cheeks and waiting for the first reason to throw out my choice of four letter words. Almost on cue, the QB overthrows a wide open receiver, or throws a pick, the running back fumbles, or a big play is called back because of a holding penalty, or something to kill my buzz.
It's such a welcome change to watch cap'n Kirk play! I haven't had this much confidence in our offense since Mark Rypien's '91 season with the 'skins. |
Re: Cousins has arrived
I'm going to just throw this up against the wall and see if it sticks.
Scenario: let's say negotiations don't go well with Cousins, his agent's demands are outrageous, so McCloughan slaps the franchise tag on him. Remember, players under the franchise tag can sign offer sheets elsewhere. The Redskins would then have the option to match the offer sheet or let him go and take two first round picks in return. Let's say he signs that offer sheet. Would you take the picks, or match the deal? Obviously your answer might be 'depends on how much the offer sheet is for'. Feel free to set a limit. I know what I would do but curious to hear. And for the record I don't think the negotiations ever get to this stage. But for shits and giggles, as they say. |
