Re: Jerome Mathis signed
Hes a depth WR, maybe used for PR since Rock doens't do those. He probably signed a veteran minimum deal so if he F's up, a better WR becomes available or just cant produce on the field, they can cut him and not worry about it (no signing/roster bonus = no cap penalty if cut). Since Hackett and Caldwell signed elsewhere, they needed to fill in some depth at WR. Simple as that. Anyone waiting on a big FA signing and being dissappointed with this.... you are an idiot.
Wow...Jerome drives a '97 Honda. Definitely a disappointment. |
Re: Jerome Mathis signed
A lot of people used that argument against Sean Taylor and still to this day call him a "thug" because of that ATV situation where charges were DROPPED.
If he stays healthy, he's the best returner (outside of Hester) in the league. Depth for WR, a great returner...I can't hate this move but I still wonder where it came from.
Maybe it's the whole idea that it was a woman. Sure, I really would like to know ALL the details about that incident and I definitely believe people need to be given a chance to reprove themselves, but as of now, the guy ranks about a 7-8 on the human excrement meter, below 10s like Pac-man. If he gives us performance and a whole season without incident, then he drops to a 4-5 next year. It's one of those I could forgive, just not forget type of things. It would be totally bittersweet for me if the guy who supposedly was choking his pregnant girlfriend is a key piece in our Super Bowl puzzle. What are we? Dallas? |
Re: Jerome Mathis signed
It's funny how some people can quickly rationalize a player's off the field issues once he signs on to be a Redskin. If he had signed with a division rival I'm sure the majority of people here would be laughing and pointing at what a dumb move this was. I had hoped that the front office had learned their lesson after Lloyd. Not saying it's the same type of move, Mathis isn't going to cost us $10M in bonuses, but I just thought that after Gibbs 2.0 there would be more of a premium on character around Redskins Park. This move was disappointing to me.
Sad but true. |

HA. True.
He must not be good enough for them. |

Re: Jerome Mathis signed
All I have to say is sometimes you don't get the whole story and things may be different then they seem...
For example. One of my good friends is in a domestic situation right now where he hasn't been able to see his kids all weekend due to his wife calling the cops on him last thursday. She said that he threw boiling water at her... I know this guy very, very well and he would never, ever do that.. he tells me that they were fighting at the dinner table and he got up and threw his plate in the sink. His 5 year old son tells it the same way. Yet he was unable talk to his kids or sleep in his bed all weekend even though he was not charged with anything. I'm not saying that he didn't do anything wrong, they fight all the time and you shouldn't lose your temper like that... but it did not go down like she said and when all this shakes out who knows how this will look on his record. |
Re: Jerome Mathis signed
From what JLC said Mathis's contract is not too high and contains NO BONUS - so cap wise it has zero impact - plus it contains protection to the Skins in case of injury.....
Redskins Insider Mathis Contract Forgot to include this in the earlier post. Mathis's 1 yr vet minimum deal came with no bonus - obviously in this case - and he could earn $520,000 if he makes it all 17 paychecks. The deal is "split" which means it has provisions that would allow the Skins to pay him less should he be placed on IR. For those of you who believed DJ Hackett would have been the best solution to the Skins search for a young, tall receiver (or at least believed he was a talent worthy of at least a legit offer), here are the numbers on his deal, too: Hackett got $750,000 to sign, the only guaranteed money in his two year deal. He could earn a max of $3.5 million over those two years. |

I’m sorry that sound so cruel but your constant defense of such behavior must be routed in something personal. Yes, I am very critical of bad behavior. But behavior (unless you are psychotic) is a choice and times I have had a overwhelming feelings of rage but the only thing that separates us from the animals is our ability to know that ACTING on our emotions in this way is wrong and should not be tolerated. The constant rationalization of criminal behavior may not explain why it happens but it certainly explains why it happens so often. I know you will ignore this or worse, turn it in to some sort of justification for your position, but maybe someday the light will go on for you, good luck. |

Re: Jerome Mathis signed
C'mon, he's a hometown product, that's going to work out. Regardless of pay, he can play. Somebody call up Darnerian McCants.
We totally should've cut Sean Taylor when he got arrested, huh?
Wow, and it gets worse. Sean T didn't choke his girlfriend... he was defending HIS stolen property (and was caught up in the process)... kind of like he was defending his family when he was KILLED!!!!!!!!!!!!! To use ST as a comparison to this guy? Are you kidding me???? He loved his girlfriend AND his daughter!!! Not to mention the love we all feel for him as a Redskin?? Go have a few drinks with some others on this board that seem to share your opinion. You guys can have your fun. I've seen and heard quite enough.... Ciao. |
Re: Jerome Mathis signed
Everybody, deserves a second chance. I am glad to see that the Redskins are taking a chance on a guy like this. If you are looking to find a diamond in the ruff, you will have to do alot of shaping and polishing, before it is a finished product. I hope it works out.

I am gonna have to agree with hess here, ST and mathis are not comparable at all. Mathis has a clear track record of fighting with teammates(which ST never did everyone loved him) and ST did not harm those who he loved(girlfriend, etc). I do think you are going too far however in saying members should go and have a drink with other people. Many males on this board agree with you hess and you dont have to turn everything into a personal vendetta against this site. |
Re: Jerome Mathis signed
pop a chill pill everybody!! geez its not like we signed this guy for seven years and $20 million. If it doesnt work out, we cut him. We cut our losses and just be glad it wasnt another Brandon Lloyd. He is here to return kicks and provide depth. If he was coming in as our #1 or even #3 guy I may have something to say. He is highly expendable and could lose his job to a draft pick. How many other players on our roster can you say that about? Wish the draft would hurry up and get here. this silence is going to cause everyone to kill each other.
