Or bring Brett Favre out of retirement and give him a multi-year deal. |
Re: Smoot Lays The Smack Down (Redskins vs. 49ers) (Thread is Open)
Crompton looked ok in the preseason. Not terrible, not great. Had some fine throws mixed with some ghastly ones. And none of us here have seen him throw a pass as a Redskin. So, yeah, some grasping is going on.
That said, we know that Beck and Wrecks are not the future. Therefore we should test drive Rockytop once we are eliminated and no harm to our season can be done. Maybe he is not our future. But he's the only QB we have who MIGHT be.
Agree. We are 3-5 with games remaining against Dall-ass, Iggles, NYG, NYJ, Pats. Is there anything to indicate we can go 3-2 in those games? Even at 3-2 there and sweeping MIA, SEA, MINN that leaves us at 9-7. I don't think 9-7 gets us in the playoffs this year. We are not a playoff team, I agree with the youth movement. We need to evaluate and get the youngsters on the field to build towards 2012. Maybe Crompton can be a solid QB, or even a solid backup, let's take a look. He won't be worse than Rex & Beck have been....and even if he is neither Rex/Beck give us a realistic chance to win games. |
Re: Smoot Lays The Smack Down (Redskins vs. 49ers) (Thread is Open)
I've got no problem with playing Crompton, as long as he's ready to play. We signed him to the PS on 9/4. I just have a hard time believing that he's anywhere near ready for prime time.

Re: Smoot Lays The Smack Down (Redskins vs. 49ers) (Thread is Open)
Smackdown - John Beck as a starting quarterback. Can you at least look at your receivers before throwing it to Helu? A RB w/ 14 receptions means your offense is terrible. McIntosh/Doughty chasing a wide open FULLBACK streaking down the field for a TD. To me that play sums up both of those players perfectly. They were good Skins but its time for an UPGRADE!!! Fred Davis baby - you're still my favorite Skin this season, but you gotta catch the ball. Is that really Anthony Armstrong or did someone kidnap him and dress in his uniform? How many catches does he have this season? I have more but my fingers are getting tired.
Smackup - Helu/Hankerson/Kerrigan, making our draft look very good yesterday. Let Mr. Hanky start the rest of the season. He is our best chance of a playmaker from the WR position. Defense - they played well all things considered. They must go through tons of gatorade for how much time they have to spend on the field. I didnt notice Hurt - which for a left guard is a good thing. He looks like he might be able to stick as O-Line depth in the comings seasons. |

Don't need prime-time. Scale back the offense to run first, keep Crompton's throws between 22-30 per game. Simplify the progressions (half field or quick reads), be more creative in the run/PA game, and see if JC2 can make some plays. Expand the playbook as he progresses. On another note; I agree with the following in a big way from Dirtbag's post: "...Redskins play to what they wish their strength was. Schemes are terrific, but they don’t win titles. Playmakers in good schemes win titles. Using guys to their strengths matters, too." I can understand a philosophy of wanting folks to understand the system so when you get the franchise QB you can run KS's "system". But, you don't have....and may not get....that franchise QB. The pass happy system only works with exceptional talent at QB. If you look at Houston 2010 & 2011, you have an offensive system that runs first, yet puts up great run & pass numbers. In 2010 (7th rush yds) and 2011 (1st rush yds) you have an improved YP(run)A from 2008 & 2009. Since KS left, Houston has improved in total points ranking (2008 17th, 2009 10th vs. 2010 9th, 2011 4th-Keep in mind 2011 has been without Johnson for a big chunk). Schaub isn't a Pro Bowl QB, there aren't Pro Bowlers all over Houston's offense. Foster while a very good player, is more a product of the system. It's time for MS to take the reigns here and dictate a change in philosophy. A committment to the run game helps (protects) a subpar QB. Plus when bad weather sets in it hampers the passing game. Here are some numbers, I'm sure you'll quickly figure out what they are: NYG 34 - 26 W ARI 43-35 W DAL 37 - 22 L STL 29 - 40 W PHI 37 - 14 L CAR 37 - 23 L BUF 33 - 11 L SF 47 - 15 L First number is pass attempts, second is run attempts. Pretty clear correlation to an imbalance and losses. I'm not saying we'd be 8 - 0 with a balanced attack, put we'd be putting more points up and not keeping our D in consisently bad position. If we get the franchise QB, then we can open it up and will be an even more explosive O. |

Re: Smoot Lays The Smack Down (Redskins vs. 49ers) (Thread is Open)
rex could throw the ball past the line of scrimmage... just saying. beck's never won a game in the nfl, is past 30 and has been passed over by the ravens and the dolphins.
I have no idea why we brought him here or why anyone thought he'd be any good. this is what i expected, and i wish it was wrong, but i think it's time to fix it. |
Re: Smoot Lays The Smack Down (Redskins vs. 49ers) (Thread is Open)
I was as hopeful as anyone that Beck would be at least a serviceable QB, if not an upgrade over Rex. But my take after watching yesterday's performance is that what happened to Rex is weighing on Beck as he's playing like a guy who is afraid to make a mistake and therefore takes no chances at all. After not having had an opportunity (except on one of the worst teams in NFL history in the 2007 Dolphins), Beck finally gets his chance, but only after Rex throws a bunch of terrible picks. So Beck figures if he can throw high percentage, short passes, avoid the INTs, they'll be able to generate enough offense to keep him in as the starter. So he doesn't look down the field, doesn't look for crossing routes, and tries to unload the ball as quickly as possible (which, given the drubbing by the Bills, is somewhat understandable).
But the problem is that no one is afraid that he can pick anyone apart. That the 49er safties were positioned for pass plays like they were run plays says a lot. No fear that the passing game is a real threat, and it surely isn't. The real elite QBs in this league walk onto the field thinking, "I am going to light you up." Beck walks onto the field thinking, "Please don't light me up." And it shows. |
