His awarness also seems to get him in trouble as well. It is all about read and react. Of all of his assets this is his weakest point of play. This is what gets him beat deep most of the time. He is not aware of what is going on around him. Example: Wild Card 2005 against the Bucs. Redskins 17 Bucs 10. Bucs have the ball 3rd and ten from the Redskins 32 yard line. Ok take a look at Edell Shepard (WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!) going up against Carlos Rogers. Now rewind back to the Bucs/Skins game earlier when Edell Shepard beat Walt Harris for a 31 yard TD to set up the biggest BS call of the season. Back to the playoff game, Shepard runs the exact same route he ran earlier in the season. (for those who cant remember basically the same route Santana Moss ran to beat Dallas for the second TD on Monday night). Ok Carlos gives a 10 yard cushion and then doesnt take off with Shepard until he is 2-3 yards past him. Chris Simms throws a perfect pass and if it wasnt for Shepard dropping that pass maybe we dont get to play Seattle the following week. (Where he had a chance to sink the Hawks early with Alexander on the bench he drops a INT that would have easily go into the End Zone for a 10-0 lead en route to a route.)

I agree with you 100% and just wanted to add to your point...The entire premise of playing off a WR and giving them a cushion is to keep the play in front of you and to make sure you never get beat deep. Rodgers was providing that cushion, which allows the underneath stuff to open up, yet still getting beat deep on several occasions.

I suspect some of the problem was coaching and poor LB zone coverage underneath, but no one starting at DB in the NFL should be getting deep on you when you have a 5-10yard head start. Some of the game film I saw showed Rodgers waiting for the WR to get into his break before even turning his hips and accelerating toward the player. By that time the WR was at full speed and no matter how fast you are, you aren't going to catch up. Bad fundamentals overall and not what I would expect from a 9th overall pick.

I think it's a good decision. I especially like reason #2. This could be a lot of fun to watch:
2. LaRon is a better blitzer and faster so he will get there quicker
Hold on guys, Laron needs to earn his starting spot first.

I would be so sure about that. there are some savy veterans that he has to beat out first. I am not saying that they are more talented, but they have some experience on the young buck.

Yes. But I really see him being there in week one.

No, I give it at least 3 weeks into the regular season before he gets a start, and even then he wont be on the field every play.

I'd be surprised if Landry doesn't start the season as the starter. Yes, GW has a history of bringing his rookies along slowly, but Landry was a 4-year starter at LSU and is about NFL ready as you could want a rookie to be according to most scouting reports.

i agree with you 100% Matty. Just to add on GW already said that he wants to see Landry in there in week one, because the faster he and Sean mesh together the better.

Re: Sean Taylor at Free Safety and LaRon Landry at Strong Safety

Just guessing here about Rogers (and the scenario) but here goes:
Last year Williams was really worried about all the long plays. One of the changes he made was to move Rogers off the line. Because of Rogers' speed, he had NEVER played (10 miles) off the line before. So he was never comfortable out there. He had to switch from being an aggressive corner to a "passive" corner: don't let anyone get past you. I can easily see this getting you off your rhythm since the receiver is now dictating to you instead of you attacking the receiver.

He did a really nice job two years ago, and I still remember him jumping high to get an INT (not dropping it.)

Since he looked good two years ago, I think his play (as well as most of the defense) last year was a casualty of covering for the absence of Springs as well as Williams' modification of the defense for fear of being beaten by the "big play".

I would not be at all surprised to see him pick up from where he was at the end of '05.

First and foremost. G-dub has forgotten more about defense than the collective Warpath community knows.

Second, for those who think that Taylor has no coverage skills, look at his entire career at Miami (including a senior year with 10 ints) and his first two years here. I know it is tough for many to judge a body of work instead of last year, when he was the basically the only healthy guy who could tackle, but the facts are the facts.

Taylor would be a monster in center field. The wideouts will be more worried about him than catching the ball and he will be running ints back all season long.
