Bill didn't lie about it when approached either. That's the difference. They acknowledged it, took their lumps and moved on. Payton and crew on the other hand denied it and lied for a couple years. Not the same situation.
Yeah, you have a point there. I still feel Belicheat believes he did nothing wrong. Oh well. Sent from my Samsung Epic 4G. |

I'll step up, I was one of the fans that wanted Williams to replace Gibbs when he stepped down after 2007. I'm definitely glad that didn't happen now. |
Re: Bountygate Punishment for the Saints
Those that wanted GW as our HC shouldn't have to eat crow, it's not like we had any idea this was going on or what a scumbag he is. In hindsight sure, it would have been a bad idea.

Ditto. At the time, he was what looked like the best option. Could have even been better than some of those we interviewed for the position and certainly would have been better than Zorn...but where would this scandal have us now. We could be the Saints right now, so we probably dodged a big bullet. |

Not really. First off, when he was being discussed as Gibbs' successor, none of the bounty stuff was public in anyway, so it's not like people knew he was POS and still wanted him as HC. Secondly, I'm of the frame of mind that he probably wouldn't have had a lot of success as HC here, and even if he was given the job, he probably wouldn't have it anymore, regardless of bountygate. |

Brad Johnson was worth $15K late in his career?

Actually, it worked out perfect. The terribleness that we have come to know as Zorn and Vinny led to the arrival of our current front office and head coach. Not only that, we are on our way to drafting a franchise QB of the highest caliber. Suffer for two years to get a decent coach/front office? I'll take that deal. |
Re: Bountygate Punishment for the Saints
I think they were just about right, the saints organization is a sleeze! Also, there fans used to constantly complain about other teams doing this and tried to act as if they were innocent...

Developing story that Sean Payton has approached Bill Parcells about coaching the Saints this year. Woah. Wouldn't that be something.

It ain't so. Personally I think it would be a good move on the Saints part since they know Payton will be gone the whole year. |

Just out of curiosity, does the league regulate spending for coaches? I know that Payton is not being paid, but I am sure Parcells won't come cheap for them. |

Re: Bountygate Punishment for the Saints
I am amazed that 57% in this poll think the punishment was just right or to light. Would love to see those numbers if it were the Redskins getting these penalties. Suspending the head coach for a full season is like handing out a death sentence to the 2012 Saints. What did the Saints fans do to deserve that?...especially the season ticket holders who had to plunk down their money a couple weeks ago. I don't care if they fine Payton his entire salary but it is not fare to the fans for them to suspend him for a full season.
|
Re: Bountygate Punishment for the Saints
It sure didn't seem to hurt their season ticket sales.
Saints fans not bailing out over bounty fiasco | ProFootballTalk Imagine if Parcells gets talked into running the ship for a season? I don't think losing Payton is going to hurt them a whole lot in the end. Brees can practically run the offense in his sleep. All they need is a caretaker at HC. |

Not to mention Payton's job isn't threatened if Parcells takes the reins for a year. He's 71 years old. He's no long-term threat. But if one of this assistants steps in on an interim basis and the team is still very successful, Benson may think twice about bringing Payton back with all that baggage. Of course I suppose any decision is Benson's anyway. |
Re: Bountygate Punishment for the Saints
Does anyone know the details about why the Saints can't put one of their assistants as an interim? Is it another rule that the NFL just made up or something?

They can, but I can think of two reasons why Payton wouldn't. 1) Sean Payton is worried that one of them will out do him, thus he is worried about his job security and has contacted Parcells because he knows he will only be a one year type deal; or 2) He has no faith that any of his coordinators are good enough to be head coaches currently. |

The only rule I know of is the Rooney rule that requires the team to interview a black coach for the position should the team look outside the organization for a replacement. Though, that may be unrelated to what you are looking for... |

I wonder how the Rooney Rule applies in this situation. It's an interim head coach filling in for a head coach that is currently under contract, but suspended. Certainly a different situation than the normal coaching search process. |

If they choose an internal candidate it doesn't apply, it only applies if they look outside the org. |

Re: Bountygate Punishment for the Saints
I know they've said we've been absolved of wrong-doing, but they also approved those contracts during the uncapped year. I'm still concerned until we draft RGIII or Luck...
|
Re: Bountygate Punishment for the Saints
So at this point it seems that Goodell has not closed the Bountygate investigation. Given how the league seems to make sh*t up, I am slightly concerned about this.
However, at worst I think any penalties would be a fine on the team, but they'd have to prove that Snyder somehow knew about this, since he's the only person leftover from that regime. A lot of the severity in the penalties for the Saints came because the league had warned them to stop the bounties and the Saints did not. Still, as TMC said, I will be more comfortable after the draft once we've selected RG3 (or Luck). Before that, there's a small part of me that is paranoid about this. At least until the matter is closed by the league. |

There is no cap on what a team may spend on coaches or GMs or scouts or any personnel of that nature. The only cap is on players... |

The Saints can name almost anyone to be their head coach next year. The only people I can think of off the top of my head who would not be allowed to work in that job would be Sean Payton, Gregg Williams, Joe Vitt and Micky Loomis. Are there any other folks sitting out league imposed banishments? If so, none of them could be the Saints coach either... |
