Point is, a ONE time issue isn't always true. I am in no way defending someone striking his wife, but why is there no pictures of her with a bruise or anything?
Also, people that strike women, don't do it once. They are habitual. Why is it this is the ONLY case of Mathis striking someone??? Just doesn't add up right now. I could be wrong (I hope I am not cause no woman deserves to be struck by a man) but why is everyone so eager to convict?

The police spokesman reported that there were red marks on her neck.

As for you theory on the recitative nature of this behavior, don’t worry, he’s a young man, there’s plenty of time to prove you right. Does your theory give a timetable when subsequent attacks should take place?

Whoops. Guess I was wrong about that last line

Betts trade rumors are supposedly more than just idle chatter, but he won't be traded just to be traded.

More than likey, in my opinion, this is like the Kevin Dyson signing of a few years back. Let's see if he even makes it past week 3 of preseason.

Yeah, I've heard the Betts trade rumors as well. Of course I don't really think it's a good idea. Especially when you're saying that Portis is going to be an 1,800 yard back, which tells me that the team is going to use him a lot, which in turn makes him an injury risk.

Also just for the sake of putting it out there. I think a lot of us have yet to realize including myself that for all this talk of adding another reciever the true #4 recieving option in this offense after Moss, ARE, and Cooley is probably going to be Portis. In the meantime they might be comfortable with Mix and Thrash as their backups at Reciever as I can't see a whole lot of Recievers they'd be able to take in the third round. That is unless Jerome Simpson or Jordy Nelson drops to them.

Re: Jerome Mathis signed

IF he makes the team, he should be given a chance. The organization has had plenty of "troubled" persons in the past. Didn't Gibbs have Dexter Manley? Didn't Gibbs draft the Big Bad Thug in Sean Taylor? (nobody seemed to care about these guys issues on game day) Obviously, Gibbs believes in character but also in giving people second chances. I understand Zorn carries the same mentality. I trust the organization will make the right decisions when it all comes down to it. Think about how many players hit their wives/girlfriends, amongst other things that are frowned upon, that we never hear about or that are never reported. For all we know, half our team could be losers. Doubtful, but possible. I do wonder though if we are still doing thorough background checks on everyone or if we are just overlooking the past now and hoping for a positive present and future.
I don't see him making the final roster. Wonder why Cartwright hasn't
worked with Brian Mitchell on learning to field punts. If he did it would
only increase his value.

Strange move, but he just may be a warm body for now.
Just because Mitchell said that on air doesn't mean he extended a formal invitation for Rock to receive his services, unless he has and I've missed that.

Do we know that Rock knows? Has B. Mitch contacted the organization, or was it just a clip from a show? Did Rock feel he was serious? Does Rock WANT his help. We may never know, it's kind of early right now anyways, could still happen.
Bad signing. I wish everyone would just agree to stay away from players who've been arrested for: DUI, Drug Possession/Use or Violence Against Women. Also, regarding the fight with the tight end, I seem to remember another questionable character at wr that was involved in practice field fight: Michael Westbrook. Baaaaad signing.
We totally should've cut Sean Taylor when he got arrested, huh?

Well since you were there I'm on your side.
Gee whiz, how unfair!!! How could they possibly suspend him when the charges were dropped? What happened to "innocent until....", no, nevermind.
They suspended him when charged.. the charges were dropped after the suspension was over. How dense are you?
Just shaking my head.... why am I not surprised.
A LOT of domestic and even sexual cases have stronger testimony than what happened and there have been many many which were shown to be that way.. and also many that landed someone in trouble who shouldn't have been.

Duke Lacrosse case is a high profile one. I had a friend accused of rape by a girl and turns out her boyfriend found out (it was at a party) so she lied and that got found out.

On the flip side, I once called the cops while at my cousins' fathers house because of a guy screaming at his wife and her crying violently, though it didn't seem like any violence was going on, it was just over the edge for my comfort level. Their family got pissed at me because apparently they never got a permit to build another house on it (the one the couple was renting) and thought that they would get found out or something. They told me they always fight and there was nothing wrong. 5 months later, he killed her, and I wasn't big enough of a douche to say, "I told you so" but I very well could have.

At the end of the day, it can go either way, and unless you were there, you don't know what happened and neither do I, but it's not my deal to judge and accuse him of something that I know nothing about. Who knows if she was attacking him and he was trying to hold her off? Too much to speculate and I don't see why we have armchair eyewitnesses here.

Re: Jerome Mathis signed

Seems to me that there are a lot of people quick to condemn Mathis due to one unproven (but admittedly terrible if true) incident and a fight with a team mate (that is hardly a unique event in such a testosterone driven, aggressive sports environment). Why don't we give the guy a chance and see what happens? Everyone deserves a second chance, surely?

As has already been pointed out, Sean Taylor did not exactly have a shining record as a personal citizen and was involved in a some pretty reprehensible behaviour both on and off the field, but fans soon forgave him because of what he did on the field. Ditto Dexter Manley.

Mathis may turn out to be an ass but let's give him a chance and not condemn him before he even gets here. If he returns the opening kick off for a TD against the Giants on opening day will anyone be complaining about his so called 'character issues'? Didn't think so.
the "common law" wife could have made it up cause she was being hormonal.
Man..this "common law" wife must have amazing powers to convert her imagination into physical choke marks on her neck...what a bee-och....either that or she asked a friend to choke her to make marks or her neck so she could drag this guys name in the mud.....and then decline charging him.

Re: Jerome Mathis signed

It's funny how some people can quickly rationalize a player's off the field issues once he signs on to be a Redskin. If he had signed with a division rival I'm sure the majority of people here would be laughing and pointing at what a dumb move this was. I had hoped that the front office had learned their lesson after Lloyd. Not saying it's the same type of move, Mathis isn't going to cost us $10M in bonuses, but I just thought that after Gibbs 2.0 there would be more of a premium on character around Redskins Park. This move was disappointing to me.
