Re: Maske/JLC: Gibbs Hints Redskins Might Trade Up
If your a linebacker in the NFL. You've gone to two pro-bowls... you really want to make your money soon. I mean your one freak injury away from losing your big day.
He's got his pay-day in his grasp, and Chicago franchised him and that really pisses him off. It would piss me off as well, and I don't think it directly reflects anything about his character. The NFL is a business, and business wise that's a smart choice. I have no problem with his decisions. As far as filling the needs, I understand that. But the same kind of philosophical thinking that goes into the "draft the best player available", is it that much of a stretch when a pro-bowl young quality proven linebacker is on the market? Get him because he's there. I tend to dis-agree with this thinking, but when the offer is on the table to loiter around inside your head... the idea sounds better and better.
Now as a player I understand why you go for your money now. I understood why T.O. did it when he did. I understand why they all do it but given the teams history you don't want to do too many things that may cause any type of resentment towards the organization from the players. I KNOW that I am being VERY hypocritical because I think they should take Calvin Johnson which could cause problems with your Wide Outs but until snyone whose name isn't Moss becomes 6'5 overnight and runs a 4.3 40 then Eff them. Bringing in Briggs who is an OLB to replace a guy that you just gave up picks for last year who replaced a guy that you signed to start last year doesn't make sense to me. I know that Briggs is a proven player, and I'd like to see him here but not for the kind of money that he'll command. I don't think the Skins should use the 6th pick unless it's Calvin Johnson because of the money they'd have to pay. I think Briggs should get all that he can but not at the Skins' expense. The Skins needed a corner as well but believe me I didn't think they should've given Nate Clements the world either. |
lets see what we'd have to give up to get johnson before we start freaking out
Re: Maske/JLC: Gibbs Hints Redskins Might Trade Up
I think Gibbs is set on Calvin Johnson. It just seems when they are high on a player they do whatever it takes to get that person. It will be this years 1st, next years 1st, and 2nd, possibly a player. About a month to go and then we'll see what all this is truly about. I get the feeling also from reading some of the other post that Lance Briggs will not be a Redskin.
OK, so beside that stupid clip how did you find out that Gibbs is so set on Calvin Johnson? |
Re: Maske/JLC: Gibbs Hints Redskins Might Trade Up
What do we have that will entice any team to trade places with us to move up?
It's not like we have another first round pick, and a second, third, fourth -- which is what it would take for someone to give up on Johnson. |
Re: Maske/JLC: Gibbs Hints Redskins Might Trade Up
You got me but it's a different situation. Briggs isn't to linebackers what Portis was to running backs when he came in. I could see if Briggs was Urlacher, then I understand but he isn't. He doesn't fill a "need". As far as the Portis deal, Champ wanted to go and Denver wanted him. The Skins needed a running back at the time so Portis came along in the deal. Was Portis going to sit for the year ? Can't remember but wasn't he going to make less than $1 mil that year ? What's Briggs slated to make about $7.5 ?
Didn't you hear? The No. 6 pick wants out of Washington!

Re: Maske/JLC: Gibbs Hints Redskins Might Trade Up
briggs wants a long term deal and market value. they offered 7 years 33 mil, id say thats substantially below market value compared to what we have seen this offseason. joey porter got 5 years 32 million...

Re: Maske/JLC: Gibbs Hints Redskins Might Trade Up
Rocky has no value right now. The only way he will ever have any trade value again is if he earns it on the field.

Yeah, the Bears are pretty cheap. Not only that, Jerry Angelo is an insecure little bitch (and I don't use that word often). Look at the facts - They lowball Lovie Smith on a contract extension - They trade Thomas Jones because Jerry Angelo wants to show the world he made the right choice in drafting Benson. - He turns down the Redskin trade claiming he doesn't want to be bullied by Briggs. What man, secure in himself, would announce that publicly. - They let Ron Rivera, one of the best DC's in the league go because they think he'll cost to much. - The reason Lovie Smith was hired in the first place had more to do with cost then credentials (though I will go on record and say he was definately qualified). You deserve better Chicago. They did such a good job builidng a team but now there cheap nature is coming back to bite them in the ass. |

If I was in his position, I would have made most of the same moves Angelo did. I think he's a good GM. One thing about him is that he is an extremely patient team builder. He will not trade up to 6 unless he thinks there is a player who can help their team. Theres no guarentee the Bears make this trade. |

The only thing that really seems to be on the line is Angelos ego. |
