Re: Fred Smoot Update
Pierce, the cerebral leader and top tackler in the third-ranked defense in the league last year, was poised to sign a six-year, $26 million contract, including a $6.5 million signing bonus, with the Giants. Pierce had said all along that he wanted to stay in Washington, but he also said he expected the type of payday that the Redskins have thrown at incoming players over the years.
The Redskins, however, are limited because of their spending splurges of recent seasons, including the $49.6 million they spent in bonuses to six new players over a four-day period a year ago. In the end, that made Pierce's asking price too high. The team also noted that his deal with the Giants turned out to be better than the six-year, $24 million contract the Redskins gave linebacker Marcus Washington last year. Washington went on to make the Pro Bowl, while Pierce was a second alternate. "We thought it was very important to have a salary structure here that makes sense for all our players," Gibbs said. "We went as far as we could go, I felt like."
Two years after we let Smoot and Pierce go because we wanted to keep a "salary structure that makes sense for all our players", our biggest needs in free agency are: MLB and CB. One step forward and two steps back. |

Re: Fred Smoot Update
Didn't see this posted anywhere. Looks like Smooty wasn't considered as good as we thought per JaLaCa.
I know a lot of the bloggy peeps are also pondering a return of Silky Johnson, AKA Smootie (or Smootster as Coach Joe once called him). I have to say I don't see this happening, but I'm not entirely ruling it out, either. He wasn't a huge favorite of the coaches when he was here, but the players liked him. Even some of the players closest to him, however, said that Smoot never quite mastered the system and was miffed by a defensive scheme that was built more around the LB and safeties; corners play the run and the underneath stuff but the safeties make a lot of plays on the ball downfield. Also, there was a sentiment by some that Smoot may have been able to play the final game of the 2004 season against the Vikes - his future employer - but did not want to push it (I find this nuts, because the dude played in some serious pain the season before with the sternum injury and all).
|

Still, apart from a healthy Springs, isn't he better than what we have now? |

Apparently the coaches didn't think he was all that. He may have been popular but was he really good? If so. Can he still be good? Minny had a terrible D and Smoot sat the bench. That is telling a little bit to me. |
Re: Fred Smoot Update
a good looker room presence is what we need right now. A person like that can make other guys play better

yeah, terrible, like #8 overall terrible. |
Re: Fred Smoot Update
I'm iffy about a potential return of Smoot. I think it would all depend on what goes down with Clements. Clements is easily our #1 target but he's not worth Champ money if that's what he's dead set on.

Re: Fred Smoot Update
I would be happy if Fred Smoot never suited up for Skins again. His mouth was always bigger than his play on the field.
That's just me. I guess anyone could play better than our corners last year. Who were they again? Some guy named Carlos and another guy named??????? Our depth at CB last year was an embarrassment and Vinny should be fired for that. |

LOL just another lame excuse to take a shot at Vinny. |
Re: Fred Smoot Update
Smoot has a big mouth and small talent.
