Troy Smith never did get a real chance in the NFL. Having watched him during his time at OSU, he did have some real talent that was never correctly used in the NFL.
I dont think his talent wasnt correctly used per say. I just think it didnt translate to the nfl. Once he got to the nfl his speed was less of a threat than it was in college. If he could catch he probably could have been a solid wr. Unfortunately he played qb and i dont think his arm was good enough. He was awesome at osu though. |

Re: RGIII undergoing total reconstructive surgery: out 6-8 months
I love RG3, but I have high confidence in Kirk Cousins...I do hope that RG3 can recovery from his knee surgery and get back out on the field. If he is able to return in time for training camp, that would be excellent. But I'm already thinking of Cousins as our starting quarterback for 2013.....

Re: RGIII undergoing total reconstructive surgery: out 6-8 months
A rarity these days.. A balance of optimism, pessimism and reality from the Dr. (and former Redskin) who performed RG3's first ACL surgery.

Re: RGIII undergoing total reconstructive surgery: out 6-8 months
"Perhaps the Redskins should not overuse RG3's running skills when he returns to the field."
That defeats the purpose of having RG3...
Not to mention the fact that it's nonsensical "logic". Nowhere did Andrews say that only 55% of backs are still in the league 2 years after surgery because of overuse. Those backs aren't in the league 2 years later because the average length of an NFL player's career is only 3 years. So naturally after two years, half will be out of the NFL just by the law of averages. The quality of the player even before the injury has just as much to do with that stat as anything else. Guys who sucked in the first place will be out of the league quick. Guys like Griffin and AP, well, WON'T! It should be noted that Griffin is not a juke you out of your shoes type runner. He's more of a straight line speed guy. The only thing you worry about is burst of acceleration with him. |
"Perhaps the Redskins should not overuse RG3's running skills when he returns to the field."
That defeats the purpose of having RG3...
Not really, I mean yeah hes a great runner but do u want a RB or QB? I want a QB |
There's a reason why Andrews says what he does about Griffin and running, he's the best sports doctor there is and he understands that RG3 can't take the punishment of big hits in the NFL, he's basically saying if u want him for many years u better not run him as much, let's b honest one more knee and he's probably done .
|
Re: RGIII undergoing total reconstructive surgery: out 6-8 months
The other part about running backs, is those guys are judged on runnin ability, blocking assignments, chips, and running pass routes.
If he loses a step ok, that sucks, but he is a QB whose primary job is to throw the football and run when necessary. Even throwing a read option or three into the game isn't going to kill him or injure him. |

Re: RGIII undergoing total reconstructive surgery: out 6-8 months
WTF point is there to having a QB if you decide to only use some of his skills? GD some of you don't make sense. He's a QB who can run...it's part of his game...learn to deal. He's going to run. Always.

Re: RGIII undergoing total reconstructive surgery: out 6-8 months
He has to recover from surgery on both knees, a piece of bone and tendon from his left knee were needed for the reconstruction.

Beautiful article. Any person needs time to recover from any kind of surgery. I hope that he and team officials have learned their lessons. |

Re: RGIII undergoing total reconstructive surgery: out 6-8 months
How weird is it that a Skins player from our 1991 SB run became a surgeon, and then was the surgeon who operated on RG3's first ACL injury?
I'm just going to say right now that I think there's a lot of PR spin behind this announcement and I'd be very surprised to see him on the field before early October.
Hope I'm wrong
I think this is what this boils down to. Skins PR staff calming the masses so they'll keep the fans from bailing next season. If they knew he'd be out the 2013 season, I can guarantee you they wouldn't tell us. Why would they? Gotta milk that cash cow and continue to give people hope so they'll buy tickets, only to string them along. Mind you, I do think he'll be back next year, but I was merely using this as an example. The fact they've been so secretive this past weeks generally means there is more to it than what there is. Hell, you can tell from the spin they put on the surgery itself. "Oh, he had his LCL repaired....and by the way we decided to redo his previous ACL surgery". In other words, he also tore his ACL and but we don't want to come out and say how severe the damage was because we don't want to take the heat. (for keeping him in the game) As far as his return, I just hope its sooner than we hope, and he comes back when he's 100%. (not 80%) Whether that's going to be 6 months or 12 months remains to be determined. |

All the planets aligned. My biggest worry is what they talk about in the article. RGIII is SO highly motivated that he will try and push too hard and actually do more harm than good. I couldn't believe reading about his first ACL tear in college and he would sit in a chair and throw passes to his father for hours. |

I hate to play the what if game but a buddy at work borough up a awesome point.
What if we had got Peyton here and had drafted Cousins. Imagine 3 good years with PM and him teaching Cousins. Plus we still have all our draft picks. sigh. |

What if we had got Peyton here and had drafted Cousins. Imagine 3 good years with PM and him teaching Cousins. Plus we still have all our draft picks. sigh.
The main problems with that scenario are: 1) Manning doesnt teach, he takes most or all the reps, and is solely focused on winning. That's not a bad thing, but I don't think Cousins would learn from Manning (no other qb has), and it's not his job. His job is to win. 2) Manning very possibly would be hurt behind our current line, which is built around rollouts screens and a qb that is mobile |

Somehow I think it does play a big part. The one thing I can tell with RGIII is that he tries to prove his toughness. You can see it in the quotes.
"One thing I won’t do personally is quit, or play scared. I’ve never played scared in my life"

"Even if they have to cart me off the field, I’m going to get off that cart and walk away.”
...and there countless of other quotes just like this. He has nothing to prove, and I certainly don't think anybody has questioned his heart. Even if they did, who gives a ****. |

Stephen McGee, Kafka, Skelton, Crompton, Rusty Smith, Dan LeFevour, Nate Davis, Rhett Bomar... You know what they have in common with Tom Brady and Cousins? They were drafted in the 4th round or later... You go with the norm not the outlier. There is a reason the vast majority of franchise starting quarterbacks are taken in the first round. Tom Brady being the exception. Not the rule. Don't compare Cousins to Brady. |
