Re: Seems like Cutler might be available.
This JLC post seems to fit in with this thread:
Jay Cutler a Redskin? Jay Cutler is the flavor of the day/week/month, so my inbox is now stuffed with inquiries about him. (Covering the Redskins is the football equivalent of covering the Yankees or Red Wings, with every player examined and debated for a possible roster spot on a daily basis.) So now it's Cutler, eh? Well, my take on this is that the dude wants to get paid, period, whether it's in Denver or Winnipeg. And given the state of panic that Broncos owner Pal Bowlen appears to be in over this whole saga, and the fact he rivals Daniel Snyder when it comes to spending, I don't see this kid leaving town. Just my hunch for now. If/when he gets that Ben Roethlisberger contract, he's suddenly going to be drenched in orange and talking about his dream of being the next Elway and spending his career in Denver. And the bottom line is that the Broncos don't have to do anything if they don't want to. The kid has three years left on his rookie contract, and if he wants to hold out, so be it. Somehow I don't see it getting to that point. As for the Redskins, well, they've certainly made no long-term commitment to Jason Campbell; forget about getting him a new contract. And Vinny Cerrato won't even call him the quarterback of the future. So would I rule out the Redskins sniffing around on a Pro Bowl QB? Heck, I never rule anything out. But finding a way to stuff in a $15-million-a-year quarterback and the inevitable $45 million or more in guarantees when you didn't have the cap room to squeeze in Ray Willis would be something. And, again, it's not like the Skins have any more significant restructuring candidates sitting around the locker room or high-salaried veterans they can just jettison. It would take a bounty to meet Denver's asking price, were this whole drama to reach that stage. We're talking multiple first-round picks in all likelihood. And if Denver Coach Josh McDaniels is telling the truth about not wanting picks for Cutler in any hypothetical, and instead wanting players, that pretty much takes the Skins out of the running. There are far too few true potential franchise QBs in the league, let alone young ones, to let them get away. You don't see guys who have put up Cutler's numbers being traded very often, and had he gone, it would have only been for another young QB whom McDaniels obviously believes is a budding superstar (Matt Cassel). A lot of Redskins fans are suggesting the team simply package Jason Campbell for Cutler, but that seems farfetched. McDaniels made it pretty clear Cassel was his guy, and I think he clearly wants someone he can mold. JC has already been through a career's worth of system and coordinator changes. That's not exactly a blank slate.
Dude you need to remove that link in your sig. It links to nothing. |
Re: Seems like Cutler might be available.
I haven't posted to this thread because I've not seen the point. Let me ask the pro-Cutler crowd something.
Why even discuss Cutler unless you think he'll take us over the top next year? Why bring him in to play when it's soup's contract year? You don't bench a QB on their contract year unless you have the man waiting behind him and Cutler isn't. If you want to bring in Cutler as backup then fine. I can see that. But he's acting like a little cry baby. If anything Denver should give us some draft picks just to take him off their hands. I'd rather have had Byron Leftwich as a back-up but that's beside the point. We finally have a starting quarterback that we've drafted and developed. The year before last he was ho hum. It was his first year on the field and he wasn't able to finish the year. Last year he made a very good improvement and was leading the league for awhile in his QB ratings and in no interceptions. We finally have what we've been screaming about, a QB that is ours. This year is a contract year for him so we'll see the best he can do. He's got the offense or should. Plus he knows the offensive players and should be able to direct them according to their ability. The QB isn't this team's problem, it's the O-line and special teams. Besides, we don't need a QB that is any better than soup to win games. He's playing fine right now. Was Rype that good, was Doug? No, they were good to average guys on a good team that ran the ball effectively. I'd rather have a great O-line with an average QB than a great QB with an average O-line. I don't care how good of QB you have. If he gets his head buried in the field on every other down then his arm isn't going to be a factor. |
Re: Seems like Cutler might be available.
Of course the QB is important but I think it's safe to say it's a WHOLE lot more than the QB. Trent Dilfer has a SB ring, Dan Marino doesn't.

Re: Seems like Cutler might be available.
I'm with sticking with J Campbell, but damn dude , throw the ball down field sometimes !
JLC's not really the bastion of insider knowledge or insight. Remember he's the one who virtually swore up and down in every pre-free agency article that the Redskins wouldn't be in on Haynesworth. How did that work out for him.
Now I highly doubt the Redskins will be in on Cutler (thankfully) but he's pretty much the last guy I'd look to for insight to the Redskins thoughts and actions.
Believe me, I know. I don't really like JLC, nor do I find him very reliable. But I think he's right on with this one. |

The vibe i get from most posts here isn't necessarily that campbell sucks or not wanted but if the opportunity is out there to upgrade go for it. Does anyone here really believe Campbell is better then Cutler, or has a higher upside?

I honestly do. JC_R and JC_D have the basic same winning percentage.
A quick Campbell/Cutler comparison- JC (Jason Campbell)-36 starts, 16-20 W-L record, 35 TD, 23 INT, 80.4 QB rating JC (Jay Cutler)-37 starts, 17-20 W-L record, 54 TD, 37 INT, 87.1 QB rating Cutler has been in a much more passer friendly, aggressive offense for his starts that Campbell was. He also had elite level WR talent in Brandon Marshall and had Rod Smith for his first 21 starts. Add in an established offense and experienced coach/playcaller in Shanahan it's not hard to figure out why he shines a little brighter in the TD category. Where it really matters however is in the W-L column. Cutler has never won anywhere, not in college, not in the pros. Is he really that much of an upgrade from Campbell?
I think this says it very well. I would add that JC_R has progressed every year, and this year should/could be a big step for him. yes I would rather keep the qb we have lived and died with, then bring another upstart in and watch as he gets the same results with a lot more whining, and not much winning. |
Re: Seems like Cutler might be available.
Ok, I give our first, third and JC, for Cutler. then I draft two Olinemen with 5 and 6.
It probably would never happen but I'd make that deal. Cutler is the better player hands down. He gets rid of the ball quicker, has a better release, seems to see the field better and is just as mobile. The guy is coming off a 4,500 yard 25 td season. Can we honestly say JC has the ability to acheive those type of numbers? I don't. I hope like hell he proves me wrong though. |

If he can we should trade our 13th overall to Denver for Cutler and not address our OL needs. |

Cutler played at freakin Vanderbuilt w/ scrubs against the toughest competition in the country and was the SEC player of the year. Sorry but you don't do that at Vanderbuilt unless you're a PURE STUD. I do agee that he's had better coaching and stayed in one offense. But Cutler seems to be getting better where JC has just stayed the same. Cutler had NO running game at all this past year. None. Yes Cutler has better wr's but McNabb plays w/ shitty wr's and carries his offense....FOR YEARS. Does JC have that kind of ability? To carry an offense and throw for 4,500 yards? We've seen small glimpses of it but this year he needs to take it to the next level. |
Re: Seems like Cutler might be available.
Cutler also had the luxury of playing in the same offense his first 3 years.
This is unconfirmed. However, an inside source says a trade will bring Jay Cutler to Washington is almost complete. The leak came roughly about one hour ago. Negotiations between Cutler’s agent, Pat Bowlen, Daniel Snyder, and the Cleveland Browns management have been ongoing for a few days and all sides seem to be happy. The deal would see Jay Cutler, Tony Scheffler, and Cleveland’s third round pick going to Washington. Jason Campbell and Chris Cooley going to Cleveland and one of Denver’s fifth round picks. Brady Quinn going from Cleveland to Denver, and LaRon Landry from Washington will be going to Denver. We thought that the Bailey-Portis trade was big. Our source says that teams will announce the deal at 5 p.m. this evening.
Did April Fools day come early this year? |

LOL good one

I really, really hope this is a crock of s**t. We would give up Campbell, Cooley, and Landry? Please...we can't be that stupid can we?

I know some fans love portis and think he's the best redskin running back ever, but he's a locker room cancer. plus, we could just cut him and re-sign him to the vet minimum, like we did with shawn springs... seriously, it would be nice to have a slightly more plausible hoax... this one had me for all of ten seconds... but was still fun, anyways |

Re: Seems like Cutler might be available.
If this is true, then that confirms that DS and VC are out of touch with the franchise. Why trade Cooley and Landry for a guy that had one decent season and suffers from diabetes that could cause issues and is an arrogant punk.

It's not true. Come on. Among other things, Cleveland doesn't even have the pick they mentioned in the trade. |
Re: Seems like Cutler might be available.
This sounds fake, not even PFT is reporting this and they come up with some outrageous crap.

Re: Seems like Cutler might be available.
That crazy ass rumor is circulating around my office.
It's funny how much the Skins are giving up. First they say Campbell, Cooley and then a 5th rounder. They then throw in LaRon Landry right at the end to make it completely outrageous and laughable. |

Did April Fools day come early this year?
Well, five o' clock has come and gone...so much for that rumor. I've heard some whoppers in my day but that took the cake. Anybody know when the last, non-draft day, 3-team trade took place in the NFL? |

However I came on here to ask if everyone is tired of seeing and hearing Cutler, Cutler, Cutler. Every once and a while Peppers name appears. Then I find people talking about a trade to be announced at 5pm which has not been announced. lol. Talk about me being out of the loop and panicked when I saw this. lol. |
Re: Seems like Cutler might be available.
no cap space and he's not really available.
Cap space isnt an issue because Cutler is still on his rookie deal and very cheap. Cap space would only be a problem if Cutler received a new, long term deal this season. Also, Cutler is available, no matter what Denver is saying. Cutler will force a trade and be starting for another team this year.... but in any case, i dont see us making a trade for him. |

Its even worse than you think. The DC Examiner, a legitimate newspaper is now reporting this as news as well. www.dcexaminer.com >> Sports
Do Skins want Cutler? By John Keim Examiner Staff Writer 3/18/09 Source says Washington has serious interest in QB The Redskins have serious interest in Denver quarterback Jay Cutler, an NFL source said Tuesday, and have entered talks about a possible three-way deal to acquire him. Two NFL sources confirmed the possibility of a three-way trade, with Kansas City being mentioned by one source as a possibility. “They’re trying to do something,” one NFL source said of the Redskins. “Whether or not it materializes is another matter, but [Redskins owner Dan Snyder] is on this hard. They don’t trust Jason Campbell.” Cutler is involved in a dispute with Denver after the Broncos had discussions about trading him to New England for quarterback Matt Cassel. First-year Broncos coach Josh McDaniels met with Culter this past weekend. Afterward, Cutler said he could not trust McDaniels and wanted to be traded. Denver has said they don’t want to trade Cutler for draft picks, meaning the Redskins or the third team would have to surrender at least one top player. The Redskins could also end up with Denver tight end Tony Scheffler, who is represented by the same agent as Culter — Bus Cook. Fueling the speculation is the close relationship between former Denver coach Mike Shanahan and Redskins executive vice president Vinny Cerrato. Shanahan, who traded several times with Cerrato while with Denver, could provide the endorsement needed for Cutler. Also, after the season Cerrato gave Campbell a tepid endorsement as Washington’s quarterback of the future. Campbell is entering the last year of his contract and the Redskins have not had discussions about extending his deal. Cerrato did not immediately return a message Tuesday. Redskins coach Jim Zorn has praised Campbell publicly this offseason. The strong-armed Cutler, 25, made the Pro Bowl this past season after throwing 25 touchdowns and 18 interceptions. In three seasons he’s tossed 54 touchdowns and 37 interceptions. In 16 games this past season, Campbell threw 13 touchdowns and six interceptions. Cutler signed a six-year, $48-million contract in 2006. Campbell has a base salary of $2.5 million this season with a cap number of $7.5 million. Examiner columnist Rick Snider contributed to this report.
Apparently, thebleacherreport is a legitimate source now and no one - the DC Examiner writer, or his editor, noticed that the article was labeled humor. The idiots at extremeskins are having a field day with this. EDIT: PFT is now saying they heard the Skins were interested in Cutler on Monday.
