Re: Reasons for drafting Sanchez
Jets Interested in Campbell
Posted by Aaron Wilson on April 24, 2009, 10:01 a.m. The Washington Redskins’ pursuit of USC quarterback Mark Sanchez may trigger a ripple effect that could send Redskins starter Jason Campbell in a trade to the quarterback-needy New York Jets, according to David Elfin of the Washington Times. That is, if the Redskins are able to trade up from the 13th overall pick to acquire Sanchez, who is rapidly emerging as the wild card of the upper half of the first round with several teams in the chase. The Jets are interested in Campbell, who has signaled that he wants out of Washington if they draft a quarterback, as a fallback option if they are unable to land Sanchez themselves. New York currently holds the No. 17 pick. Redskins executive Vinny Cerrato dismissed the notion that he has spoken to the Jets regarding Campbell. Through their actions, the Redskins have made it clear that they want to upgrade at quarterback. Their interest in Sanchez follows an unsuccessful offseason bid for Jay Cutler, who was traded to the Chicago Bears by the Denver Broncos.
so is this implying we will go get the Seahawks #4 with our picks, then trade Campbell to the Jets for their 17th pick? |

I wonder what would happen if we traded our whole draft to get Sanchez and then selected Mack with the pick that we would receive from the jets. Would this be every fans dream? |

We're not going to have to trade our entire draft to move up 5 spots. 1st, 3rd and next year's 2nd should do it unless the Jets throw in a '10 1st, which I doubt. We're in love with the player, they have the position of need so they can draft Freeman and still keep all their picks. |
Re: Reasons for drafting Sanchez
I just came across this thread and I dont think I can add much as everyone has done a great job covering his strenghts. One reason why I think Sanchez is so attractive to the Redskins is because, in a number of ways, he's the exact opposite of Jason Campbell.
Partly due to the Skins themselves, Campbell has had to learn something like 7 offensive systems in the past 9 years. I don't know whats going on in Campbells head, but on some level, thats had to have some sort of affect on him. Perhaps the reason Campbell is so careful and indecisive when he's on the field is he's simply not comfortable. Every time he goes back to make a pass, he has 7 or 8 different ways of doing things going through his head. None of it is really Campbells fault, but thats a reality. Campbell has alot of tools, but i think he'd have to be in this system 4 or 5 years before he ever truly got comfortable in it. Going into a contract year, are the skins really ready to make that sort of investment in him? Then, you look at Mark Sanchez. He's been in one system - a pro-style WCO system - his entire college career. If he's drafted by the Redskins, it will be a smooth, easy transiton from college and he'll be groomed by one of the best QB teachers in the game. He has all the physical tools a coach could want, plus he's got the intangibles - the charisma, leadership and voice this team hasnt had at the QB position in a long long time. By all appearances, he's the kind of QB you build a team around.... thats why the Redskins love Sanchez. I'm not going to lie. I want the team to get Sanchez. I think if the Redskins keep Sanchez, and keep Zorn around (or at the very least replace him with Holmgren or Shanahan), then the Skins will be on their way to a return to greatness. I firmly beleive that long-term, its a very very wise move. But here's three facts that i'm preparing myself for, should we get Sanchez: 1. I'm not going to like what we give up in order to get him. 2. We'll be ok in 2009, but in 2010, we're going to need a new Center, RG, and if Heyer doesnt progress, a RT, too. 3. I'm going to feel very, very sorry for Jason Campbell. i don't know how we're going to fix that 2nd problem. Then again, a year ago, i never thought in my wildest dreams we'd have DeAngelo Hall, Albert Haynesworth, and Derrick Dockery on our 2009 roster. I'm worried about 2010 now, but a small part of my brain is telling me "don't worry. If Snyder gets his franchise QB, he'll make sure he does whatever he has to to protect his investment." |

BHA has less than 1,000 posts but I'm sure he has more words posted than some posters with 3 times the amount of posts! He's by far our most loquacious poster! BHA, keep bringing it, you've added substance along with volume! |

Snyder will do whatever to protect his investment? Really? At what point has he shown any inclination to do that...we gave up a lot for JC but have allowed 2-3 years to pass w/o giving an honest effort to address the o-line. Snyder does things backward...doesn't build a system and plug a QB into it like the successful teams. Sanchez is nothing special to build around from what can be seen so it's still the same ole same ole. |
Re: Reasons for drafting Sanchez
What happens when JC and Bugges say, "kiss my a** I'm out"?
|
Re: Reasons for drafting Sanchez
Nice thread. Considering how things look right now, I think it's a good idea to kind of get comfortable with the idea of having Sanchez be our QB. I do like that he has a quick release and can hit his receivers in stride. It's also a plus that the offense he played in at USC is a lot like the one Zorn is trying to implement.
p.s. is anyone else extremely excited (or worried) for Saturday so we can finally move on, in whatever direction that may be? |
Re: Reasons for drafting Sanchez
Judging from the interview I now highly doubt that we'll come away with Sanchez. Maybe if he falls to Jacskonville we can get him but I don't know.

I'm not sure you draft a guy because we have that current system in place given our history of constant change in coaches and schemes. What happens if Zorn goes 4-12 next year (not predicting this, just saying "what if") then do you really think Snyder will keep Zorn around? Or will he go after the next big thing...maybe even Cowher? We don't have the consistancy in our coaching staff to do something like this. |

Cowher already said no. We wouldn't have Zorn if any of the other big names had said yes. They said no. |

Spurrier said no a few times before he said yes too. How do you know he will say no to 5 mil+ next year? Not saying he will say yes, but if Zorn goes 4-12, you bet your ass Snyder will be on the phone with his check book open! |
Re: Reasons for drafting Sanchez
The reason plain and simple is that the Redskins lost confidence in JC. They no longer believe that he is in their long term plans. And QB is the most important position on the team. When you look at this decision you have to look at it from the point where they already decided that Jason is not the answer...then what do you do? I think if you eliminate JC from the equation it's easier to conclude that Sanchez is the right pick. What most Redskins fans are doing is saying the Redskins are wrong and Jason can be the answer.
I rather wait a year and get a McCoy or Bradford still. I have said in the other threads that the main reason this guy shouldn't be so hyped up is that USC is really the only real football team left in the Pac-10 anymore. I mean they have been stacked for what, close to a decade now with talent. They probably could have beat some lower tier NFL teams they have been so stacked with talent and speed as of late. Remember the debate over whether JC was really all that great at Auburn or did he flourish since he had 2 first round pick HBs lining up behind him? The same type of question needs to be asked about Sanchez. Hard to look average or medicore if you have that much talent around you!!!! You probably could say the same about McCouy or Bradford to be fair about it, but damn they play in the Big 12, which is a lot more physical than the Pac-10. |

Can't agree any more Goat. Without the O line upgrade, Snyder could somehow pull Peyton Manning out of his ass and we would still be an average team. Manning wouldn't last the whole season with this aging bunch of slobs. |
