Re: Cowher Talking to Skins about Job in '08?
MAN.... COWHER IN DC... THAT WOULD BE AMAZING....
Remember, Cowher won year in and year out... his staff was always being pulled to be head coaches, his players were gone to free agency, and Bill RARELY missed the playoffs. Your crazy thinking he only did it because of Grimm.
I might be crazy, but you cant read. Read my post, I said the entire staff and GM. You also need to check your facts, you are incorrect in saying he won year in and year out, they did not, including a long three year stretch where he did not make the playoffs. 1998...7-9 1999...6-10 2000...9-7 2003...6-10 2006...8-8 Add to the fact the Cowher's Steelers year in and year out were one of the most talented teams in the NFL and only have one Super Bowl to show for it. |

Assistant? Yes. Head coach? I'm not sure. |

Blache very nearly became head coach of the 49ers a few years ago, before they stunned everyone and hired Dennis Erickson. I'd love to see, over the next two years, guys like Earnest Byner and Kirk Olivadotti take on a bigger role with the team coordinating the offense and defense and emerge as an in-house candidate to be head coach. That's something that's missing I think from Gibbs' legacy, a homegrown coaching tree. |

My thoughts on Byner and Olivadotti, I don't think so, and really could care less. The only thing right know that's missing from the legacy of Joe is a HOMEGROWN WINNING TREE, which is all I care about! With that said, I think this year we mesh and Joe's legacy comes back to life. |

Just to be fair. Blache is great. We should hold on to him like grim death. Who else could have gotten more out of the guys he' had? |

And despite that still won 7 or more games in I believe 12 out of his 14 years in Pitt. That's a lot more than we can say about our Skins over that span. Hell, Gibbs has 3 times more Super Bowls than Cowher, yet Cowher never lost 11 games in a season. Joe did just that last year. I think it all depends on how we do in '07. If we make the playoffs and win a game or two, I think Joe will come back for his final year. If we miss the playoffs and manage only 6 or 7 wins, I could see a switch. And if by some chance Cowher did come to DC, there is no chance he would bring Russ Grimm, or Ken Wisenhunt with him. They aren't leaving Arizona after one season. |
Re: Cowher Talking to Skins about Job in '08?
I only see him here if Gibbs steps down after the 2007 season. (well that is obvious.)

I would take a 3 year drought anytime. we have made the playoffs i think once since 99? that is 1 in 8 seasons. and lets see the 9-7 year would have gotten you in the playoffs in the NFC. |
Re: Cowher Talking to Skins about Job in '08?
How about the legendary collapse of '96? That was a talented team that shouldn't have gone 2-6 down the stretch to miss the playoffs.
The '97 team was talented too but couldn't win the games they were supposed to win. Norv is a dud as a head coach and he's only going to prove it in San Diego. They'll crack under the pressure, just like he always did here. I think some fans do have some selective amnesia when it comes to Norv and have forgotten how crappy he really was as a head coach. I'll never understand the support and excuses for a coach who is 58-82-1.
The '96 team started out 7-1 by beating the teams they should have beaten, but then the schedule got serious. They still wound up 9-7 though; and that was with a horrible defense. I wouldn't call my comments about Norv "support and excuses". It's just a reminder for everyone to put things in perspective. He had his flaws, no doubt. But he also had some bad rosters. Put those two together and the results shouldn't be surprising. If he bombs in San Diego, then you're right and I will be wrong. But barring injury, I just don't see that happening. |
Re: Cowher Talking to Skins about Job in '08?
His crappy W-L record is all the perspective I need. Norv never won the big games here, his teams constantly underachieved. We'll see what he does with a loaded roster and a ton of pressure. With that roster most any coach should be able to put it on cruise control and get at least 12 wins and a deep playoff run. Anything less will be a major disappointment.

It's hard to make the case FOR Norv, but it's also hard for me to root against the guy. I could see that offense putting up a lot of points and certainly Philip Rivers will benefit greatly. A also think the pressure is mitigated somewhat by the very fact that people don't think of him as a great HC. It's just hard for me to root against Norv. I'll leave it there. |
Re: Cowher Talking to Skins about Job in '08?
What did he do for us in his 7 years here to make you want to continue rooting for him??
Don't get me wrong, I don't have anything against the guy. I think he's a great offensive coordinator. I just think he's garbage as a head coach. |

He seems like a decent fellow. I thought the way he was fired here was disgraceful. They didn't need to do that. I was a little embarrassd to be a Skins fan when I went to Dallas for the game the next weekend. Just a little. |
Re: Cowher Talking to Skins about Job in '08?
I don't think Norv is a good coach. I don't even think he's a good coodinator. But maybe theres no better supporting evidence for the argument that coaching has little correlation with winning and losing than with what is about to happen in SD this year. That roster is loaded, and Norv doesn't even have to find missing pieces. They are all in place already. Norv has little control over the outcome of the Chargers' season this year. He just calls the plays, and its on the offense and defense to execute.

I don't understand why the "Norv is garbage crowd" thinks he was/is a good coodinator. The qualities that make a successful head coach (especially a HC who calls plays) are pretty much identical to the qualities of a playcalling coodinator, correct? So does Norv have these qualities or not? I doubt he could have them only conditionally. He's either an underrated coach, or an overrated coodinator. (I tend to feel hes the latter) |
