Franchise qb maybe, but does he have.enough left in the.tank to even play out the 5 years he.is.signing at.a "franchise qb" level? I dunno thats the.sketchy question. Sucks to trade.fuller either way he was on his way. |
Redskins trade for Alex Smith
Alright now this is getting silly. You wouldn’t trade a slot corner for a franchise QB?
Do you consider Fuller just a normal slot corner? And are we expecting Smith to start for more than two seasons? The former was graded as the 6th best corner by passer rating overall by PFF- overall. Will the latter play the length of what a franchise QB plays here? Not to mention the relative stages of each career. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |

No, not a 35 year old QB. Considering the 49ers got Garoppolo who is ten years younger for a 2nd, hell no. |

Re: Redskins trade for Alex Smith
I thought Fuller was a backup CB with flashes of goodness and potential? Not seeing why people are that upset over trading him for Smith.
If our FO goal was to distract from them letting Cousins walk for little compensation, they seem to be succeeding. The difference in KCs FO and ours is stark: KC gets a 3rd rd pick, and maybe a good player, and dumps salary, for a QB they already have a young replacement for. WASH gets an older QB, loses said 3rd rd pick and player, does dump salary, and lets their QB walk for maybe a comp pick. Basically KC gets better. WASH spends a pick and a player to try plugging a vacancy at QB, and might have created another vacancy depending on who we traded away. |
Because successful teams should be able to project where players are headed- and by all metrics, Fuller was on an upward trajectory. Not to mention being on a rookie contract. The value of players like him don’t fall off trees. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |
Re: Redskins trade for Alex Smith
Chico is not the most pissed off by far. That would be me. Smith is decent. Not Kirk though.
Matty, I find it hilarious how you and Schneed managed to flip the switch and make this into a win for us immediately. This is as retarded a move (and I say this without knowing if it's Fuller they gave up or not) as I have ever seen in all my years. Smith is 33, how many good years do you think he has left? You think he's the next Brady, gonna keep playing solid into his 40's? This sets us back multiple years because we damn sure ain't contending with Smith at the helm. If we gave up a 2nd and Fuller to get him this is a terrible trade. If it's a 3rd and Fuller it's still a terrible trade. If it's Fuller for Smith straight up it's a terrible trade. Smith was a lame duck qb in KC who was most likely moving on anyways following their massive blown lead to the Titans in the playoffs. Somehow they managed to get a high draft pick and/or a stud player for him? It's a fleece job. You seem to be forgetting that the guys that totally fucked up the Kirk situation from day fucking one are in charge here. Are you confident they are going to make the right moves with that extra space they freed up? Let me phrase it another way, would you have rather had Calais Campbell or McGee/McClain last year? We sure saved a lot of money and production going for the latter instead. I have no faith in the decision makers for this football team. This was the last straw. We have seen Alex Smith's ceiling when you surround him with adequate talent at every position. He will have little of that comfort here. Kirk was running for his life behind those backups last year, I'd hate to see what happens if it happens again next year. Let me guess though, last year was a one-off occurrence, what are the odds it happens again? The same guys that fucked up the Kirk contract, also decided 2nd year wideout Pryor and rookie Doctson could replace 2 reliable playmakers. And before you start, yes I will be watching, and discussing this team just like I do year after year after year. But the incompetency is shining through right now. This wouldn't even be a discussion if you could just extend your franchise qb. He ain't Brady, but we wouldn't need a Brady if they could build a team properly. They can't do either. Only the fucking Redskins could fuck this up. And only you and Schneed can pull off calling this a win when the fact remains: After decades of amazing contract finagling, managing to spend wildly whenever you felt like it, always managing to fit under the cap, you decide to cheap out on the most important player on the team. He calls BS, gets paid 44 mil for 2 years of above-average play, stares you down and wins in the third offseason, you end up trading a high draft pick and/or one of your best young talents for a stopgap 33 year qb who is best when he has a complete team to take the pressure off of him (which he won't have here). Alex Smith is not the "long term solution" he's the goddamn bridge to the next long term solution. Which will cost us an additional 3-5 years stuck in mediocre-to-averageville meanwhile the current FO and staff will manage to keep us barely treading water, always thinking next year will be better. Fuck this team. |
Re: Redskins trade for Alex Smith
I don't like losing Fuller. However, this allows them to focus on drafting a strong player in the first round like Vita Vea, Da'Ron Payne or another player that isn't a QB in the first. With the money saved by not paying Kirk maybe we can resign Zach Brown and others.
Maybe you draft Rudolph, Jackson, or Kyle Lauletta to grow in the draft. Here is a question if Aqib Talib comes here to replace Breeland, are you still upset? |

I really feel like we’re back to pre-Gruden Redskins... bad deals, trading away young talent and high picks and making high risk, low reward moves. The Redskins need a draft grade no lower than a B+ this year

Re: Redskins trade for Alex Smith
Kendall Fuller was great for us this year and it sucks that he's leaving, but you have to do what you have to do. The Cousins fiasco is beyond us now. Way easier to recover from losing a great slot corner than the disaster the Cousins train was heading towards.
|
Re: Redskins trade for Alex Smith
Smith completed 67.5% of his passes this year for 4000 yards and 26 TDs with only 5 picks along with 355 rushing yards.
Cousins threw for damn near the exact same amount of yards for 27 touchdowns and 13 picks and about half the rushing yards. Smith's passer rating was also about 10 points higher. I get Cousins is younger, but this is a wash based on production for a lot less money. We can attempt to replace Fuller way easier than the QB position. |

I would imagine he is somewhat relieved. All along he has talked about how he didn't appreciate the year to year scenario with the QB position. Now he has his guy for the next 5 years. Guarantee he is sleeping like a baby tonight. The narrative has been that they F'd up the Cousins thing a couple years ago. I'm not going to dispute that whatsoever, but who knows if a deal would have ever been done. Maybe Cousins never wanted to be here (ever), thus the year to year scenario that we have seen. Whatever...it is what it is. Now we have a QB, and freed up some cash to build a better team around him that we wouldn't have had if we tried to meet Cousins' demands. I like the guy, and wish him well, but the price tag was never going to be worth it and would have crippled this team for years. I'm not super excited about losing Fuller, but we still have some good CBs...Norman, Dunbar, Holsey, Moreau. Maybe we add a FA if we don't resign Breeland, or maybe add more depth in the draft. He played great this year, rated high, might end up being super, etc., but it isn't like he is irreplaceable. He wasn't shutting dudes down weekly, and he made his share of mistakes. |
Re: Redskins trade for Alex Smith
You can now draft a CB at 13 or around 45 or around 72. We can find a new slot CB. He won't be as good, but we all agreed we needed a QB and obviously Skins didn't like where this was heading. Most important position is taken care of, we now have extra cap space, and we now won't have to draft a QB. I like the move.

Re: Redskins trade for Alex Smith
Kirk was never going to sign with us so this is a good move.

Re: Redskins trade for Alex Smith
I think Kirk and Alex were almost the same quarterback this year. It's almost a straight up swap, except I am pretty sure Alex isn't costing us $25 million a year, he is signed longterm without the drama, and we can use our first rounder on a running back or defensive player.
and we get a compensatory pick for Kirk |

Didn''t think of that, since he will be leaving as FA, we'll still get out 3rd round compensatory pick? If so, that's awesome, and it takes a bit off the sting of losing Fuller. Fyi, Fullet is awesome on Twitter. He busted out the Homer in bushes meme. |

[B]@ByMikeJones Kendall Fuller is indeed the player that the Redskins are sending to Chiefs along with the third-round pick. Chiefs fleece Skins. Re: Redskins trade for Alex Smith
Losing Fuller really sucks. He's going to shine.
BUT our secondary is about the only area I really don't consider like one of need (Norman, Breeland, Moreau, Dunbar, Swearinger, Nicholson, Everett). And we basically slided down in the 3rd round. I'd say Chiefs can be happy with the trade, they probably got a little more value than we did... BUT I've always liked Smith quite a lot, I have him on my Dynasty League so I always kept an eye on him. He's an accurate thrower, mobile QB, doesn't make a lot of bad decisions. Overall I'm happy to be moving on from the Cousins debacle, and I think we got a solid QB, at a reasonable price. Keep in mind we may very well be draft a QB this year (4th round?). (EDIT: maybe not this year but next or the year after that) |
Re: Redskins trade for Alex Smith
Question: how does it work with Smith's contract extension?
He only had 1 year left on his Chiefs contract (which makes this trade a real win for them IMO), but he reportedly "agreed" to a 4 years extension with us. Is there anything we can do to make his extension sort of part of the trade? Like if he doesn't sign it the trade is void ? |
Re: Redskins Trade for Alex Smith
People were going to hate how this ended no matter what. CB was and is a position of depth for us. And Alex Smith comes in to a good offensive situation where he will flourish under Gruden.
We basically traded a young CB for a stable QB for 5 years. Unless the NFL screws us the compensatory pick the draft picks should be a wash. This trade likely will rank like the Portis/Bailey trade. We got a little bit of a short stick but the player we got will be a good teammate for the rest of his NFL career, and except in this case the player who was the fly in the ointment was KC instead of Bailey. Where do I get my Alex Smith jersey :food-smil: |

Hello folks chief's fan here not to gloat at all but offer my sympathy. The worst thing about alex smith is the minnions you will get here.
They follow him not a team it is jim jones cult like creepy. I am sure you guys are like us and argue about draft picks and coaches like all fans but come gametime you are redskin fans. These people will come aboard and act like redskin fans but are alexsexuals. They made our chief's boards miserable. When you lose it will be everyone's fault but alex. They will tell you that you are not a true redskin fan. That's right these idiots will tell you how to root for your team. Don't let alex only fans be a divisive force on your board. I have done my duty you have been warned. |
Re: Redskins trade for Alex Smith
I swear, our front office just sucks the fucking fan out of me. We just don't have competent people at the top of the organization.
|
Re: Redskins trade for Alex Smith
It was a smart decision for the front office to get Alex Smith.....they had a plan and were able to execute that plan in the obvious case that Kirk was going to exercise the leverage they allowed him to gain.
And to be clear I am not absolving the FO of blame for their previous handling of the QB situation. They screwed it up with Kirk. They should have given him a long-term deal 1-2 years ago AND they should have been drafting and grooming viable developmental QBs. They did neither and Kirk had them over a barrel as a result. I don't think Kirk was worth highest QB in the league money. I think Alex is at worst a "push" in terms of QB. I don't like losing Fuller....but let's not kid ourselves we weren't getting Alex without trade compensation. Fuller was good but he wasn't a fulltime outside CB was the 3rd WR usually going against a team 3rd WR. Welcome to Washington Alex! |
