Re: Goodbye Doughty, Hello Horton!

Why can't we just appreciate the great job that Horton did in stepping in when needed? Why can't we be proud of the fact that Horton and Blades showed that we have some good depth at key positions?

We're always knocking the front office for not building any depth on this team. Well you know what, while everyone talked about the Saints missing three starters on defense almost no one mentioned that we were missing two ourselves. Instead, we had to go to our bench, and they were key to a strong defense especially in the 2nd half.

We should be celebrating the depth the roster showed yesterday.

All that said, I think Horton and Doughty will both get plenty of playing time against Arizona's passing attack next week.

Re: Goodbye Doughty, Hello Horton!

Only time will tell. I was happy with what Horton said in his post game presser and saying that he is a IQ player and is the student of the game. Also that he directed some players in the right positions during the game. Not saying he should start of Doughty..But he seems like a very cerebral player who might "eventuallY" take Doughty's spot as the starter. That being said.

We've got Boldin & Fitz coming next week.

Who would you rather start?

This is a question and its not a preference for either player. Just want your opinions.

Greg Blache was asked about Horton replacing Doughty on Redskins Postgame Live last night and he said that they will look at the film and make the decision from there, but he also a said that they have to get their most productive players on the field hinting that Horton is either going to start or play a lot next week. Honestly, I don't think Jim Zorn has any clue about what's going on with the defense because obviously he leaves that up to Blache. So I am going to believe Blache's statments more than Zorn's when it comes to the defense.

Re: Goodbye Doughty, Hello Horton!

To start? Doughty. But I would like to see alot of Horton. I've had a gut feeling about him since training camp. He had a former Redskin coach coaching him in college which is a big help but he still has to have time to learn on the pro level. Personally I think he's going to be a great player for the Skins for a long time. Call it luck or football smarts or whatever, he makes plays. Doughty is a solid player who knows the system. He's also smart and can help Horton pick up the ins and outs of the pro game. I'd just like to see him eased in instead of just throwing him out there in situations he may not be familiar with yet. I believe before long he will be half of the best safety tandem in the NFL.

Re: Goodbye Doughty, Hello Horton!

My thought process right now is. Who will be able to play better against Fitz and Boldin? I think Doughty is solid. But I am worried about him going up against those two in passing situations. So its more like experience (Doughty)against athleticsm(Horton) to me? Hmmm...Not sure who I want to start..

Listen guys i like the way Horton played yesterday...and not to take anything away from him....but he seemed like he was in the right place at the right time yesterday which ill gladly take but to put him in the same sentence as Sean Taylor is completely silly. Ill take Sean Taylor over 10 Horton's. I dont think its time to bench reed yet i wanna see some more of horton before we bench doughty.

Nobody has compared him to Sean, we don't know what his potential is. Time will tell and who's to say what Kareem Moore can do? Regardless of who starts or doesn't, we should be glad to have Landry, Doughty, Horton, Moore and Hamilton as our safeties. We went from a weakness to possibly a position of strength.

i wasnt doubting that our safeties have become a possible strength....but i did see somewhere on this thread it was the second coming of sean taylor. IMO thats a comparison to ST. and he's no ST.

This is what I wrote on post #10:

I think he was picked and to sent to us by Sean Taylor, he's a playmaker, ballhawk and can hit. I can't wait to see until he polishes his game.

I feel like Horton eventually will be great player, possibly a star. The man has a nose for the football or the big play, every game I've watched he's always in the mix. Yes, he will get burned but I just got a really good feeling about this guy, the potential is there and is not about one game he has consistently being do this since the beginning of the exhibition season.

SF redskin my apologies.. i misread that...i was sent for a loop just seeing ST mentioned in the same post as horton. As i previously stated...Horton played great no question. But its not time to bench doughty yet.

Re: Goodbye Doughty, Hello Horton!

I think it's important to note that Horton was coached by Dewayne Walker at UCLA, who was on our staff under Gregg Williams for a few years. I'm sure that was big reason we chose him. I'm also sure that sped up his learning curve when absorbing the D.

Great post. Sadly people get carried away and like to bash a good player like Doughty. I think it is stupid. I am not taking anything away from Horton's play, but once again the way people talk about Doughty, you would think he was a Cowboys player. Horton had a terrific game, and it is up to the coaches to decide whether to start him or not. The team has already replaced a veteran (Jensen) with a young player (Heyer), but that doesn't mean we have to bash the thell out of Jensen. Horton has great potential, and I hope he's able to perform at that level week after week, if not we have a decent player in Doughty.

Well good, let's hope Doughty blows out his knee so Horton can play, or maybe he can singlehandedly causes our team to lose a game so he can be benched.

Maybe not terrible, but he did get burned right down the middle of the field for a 60+ yard touchdown today. I'm afraid to see what happens next week when he's covering the deep middle against T.O.

Well according to ESPN:
"The Cardinals tied the score again on the game's first offensive play of more than 20 yards. Fitzgerald, who last week had a 75-yard touchdown reception, sped past Reed Doughty and LaRon Landry on a post route for a 62-yard scoring pass."

But what do they know? It's all Doughty.

He's not a future HOF who will never get beat (especially by one of the best wr's in the league). But how about his tackles all over the field, his half a forced fumble (I know, ff are only awarded to one player and Rocky will probably get the stat) plus the fact that the safety tandem limited the high powered Cards to only 1 play over 19 yards. Neither Horton nor Doughty will be in the Pro Bowl anytime in the next decade but both can be exceptional role players on a really good defense.

yeah, I thought Doughty had a decent game today. I was pissed about the long td to Fitz but he was pretty sure on his tackling, with a couple of key third down stops.

Watch the play again. Doughty was the deep safety on that particular pass. He is a liability in coverage and doesn't have the natural ability that Landry has, to make up for his lack of coverage skills.

You are correct in regards to Doughty, but what have you seen from Horton in his first three games that makes you so sure he is not a potential pro bowler? All I've seen is Horton putting himself in position to make plays, and a natural ability to be around the ball, often.

Re: Goodbye Doughty, Hello Horton!

I just want to know why in the hell Doughty was in coverage against Fitzgerrald in the first place. I know that they reported that Landry was there too, but it looked like all Doughty to me.

I would have thought that they would play Fitzgerrald with man coverage and a Safety over top. This was not the case on that play because they beat a cover 3. Thats 2 weeks in a row where the cover 3 worked against us.

Since when does ESPN get anything right (sorry SmootSmack)? But if you go back and watch the play we were in a two-deep scheme meaning Doughty was responsible for one half of the field and Landry the other half. Fitzgerald was on Doughty's half of the field, thus making Doughty responsible for coverage, not Landry.

Doughty got benched after that TD.

Re: Goodbye Doughty, Hello Horton!

Doughty needs to be benched. I said before as far as experieinc Doughty should have played but as far as athleticsm Horton should have played. Point made. When we are going against a team who is primarily a running team we should use Doughty. A team with more of a passing attack. We should use Horton because of his speed and he is better in coverage. Honestly I think Horton is good coming up for the run too. Saying that experience aint ish unless you can make plays and not be a liability. Horton should start for the rest of the season. Definitely next week.

Well to be clear, that's an Associated Press report, not an ESPN one. So you'll see the same thing on SI.com, CBSSports.com, Yahoo Sports, FoxSports.com, etc.

Doughty is not my boy, I just hate when people make stupid claims and blindly hate someone. I can't wait until the likes of you goes on a barrage of hate threads against Horton once he gets burned or makes a rookie mistake (Just like the wonderful people that flooded the anti-Campbell threads after week one). But don't worry, I'll be there to defend him and post some sense just like I've done with Doughty.

Honestly I think it is nice we have two guys that we can use at SS that are both effective. Most teams would die for that.
