Re: Redskins Sign Vonnie Holliday
I like the idea of trying out a lot of players at all positions. If they try out enough players, they may find one or two who can help the team to get better. I hope they run tryout players through Redskins Park as if they're on a conveyor belt because it could only help. We were 4-12 last season, folks. Four and Twelve! There is a lot of room for improvement and not much risk of getting worse.
I agree. It's not like we're shelling out big contracts to all these vet signings. Depth/competition. Competition across the board is what Shanny/Allen wanted from the jump. Fine with me. If Holliday can make the team and contribute in the 3-4 for a season or two while helping younger players, then good. If not, we lose hardly a thing for bringing him in. |
We sure love d-lineman
And the ironic part is we're switching to a defense that usually results in a team carrying less linemen then the typical 4-3 team. |
Re: Redskins Sign Vonnie Holliday
Who is next? Courtney Brown?
Can we stop signing DLineman who aren't going to make the team already... Have we cut Renaldo Wynn yet? (who never should have been on the roster over Dixon...)
Wynn is a free agent, he's been off the roster for a while now. |

When Jimmy Johnson took over as coach of the prostrate Cowboys years ago, he ran players through tryouts and training camp at a remarkable pace. Several players would come in and be quickly evaluated and, if he didn't think they could help, he would cut them and bring in some more. It was a constant cycle. It turned out, by doing this, he found some players who could help the team. If trying out many players could help JJ and the Cowboys then, why couldn't it help Shanahan and the Redskins now? |
Re: Redskins Sign Vonnie Holliday
I consider this more of Allen saying" F%^& you AH!" than anything else. At this point I would keep AH arounds since nobody wants to touch that "toxic" contract of his and his now displayed shitty attitude. Let him fulfill his contract out(unless you can indeed get a nice trade deal for him
) and let him sit. Keep the guy in limbo in his own self imposed purgatory. He is only hurting his career in the long run. Holliday is a 3-4 man anyway, so he should be a keeper for depth at least and maybe a part time starter.
there are backup QB's making more money over the next 3 years than AH |
Re: Redskins Sign Vonnie Holliday
Not to mention competition - something we have been lacking. The way to find the diamonds in the rough, or those whose play may have been lacking in the past, is to try to stir up their competitive nature, and see if any shine through. If not, you have lost very little, but the chance of gaining one, two, or even three gems is worth the risk.
exactly.. we've been complaining about poor depth/backups for awhile.. and now that we're signing guys to COMPETE for a backup role that weren't already on our roster we have guys flippin out like they're being penciled in as starters just from the signing |
Re: Redskins Sign Vonnie Holliday
I didn't realize he had 5 sacks in a limited role last year. Sounds like he could still be an effective player. Read somewhere that he's like a Philip Daniels type in that he keeps himself in top shape for an older player.

can't hurt to have another guy like Phil |
Re: Redskins Sign Vonnie Holliday
This is a smart approach to instilling the work ethic you want on your team. The more guys there are who could take your job, the harder you've got to work to keep your job. Same thing Portis is experiencing at RB, and Kelly/Thomas are experiencing at WR.
And then the side benefit is you get a bunch of guys involved in your system through training camp, then when the inevitable injuries hit later in the season, you call one of them back and put them back on the roster to plug the gap. |

looking at his rankings on PFF he's top 5/top 10 type of guy looks like he was just a cap casualty, some good stuff at the bottom (voted as a team captain, etc) More on the Vonnie Holliday dilemma - The Phinsider |
Re: Redskins Sign Vonnie Holliday
We have bigger needs at 3-4 OLB than we do at 3-4 DE's. I still don't see why we sign Adalius Thomas.
Sure we're set at the one OLB spot with Orakpo, but Andre Carter didn't fit well in the 3-4 when he was with San Fran. Lorenzo Alexander isn't suited enough to temporarily play man or zone coverage. Ditto for Jeremy Jarmon, and I think that Chris Wilson isn't that strong enough to play the run, as well as man coverage. just saying we should bring in some 3-4 OLB's who are proven. |

Re: Redskins Sign Vonnie Holliday
Fittingly, two of Hollliday's closest comparables according to PFR are: Renaldo Wynn and Phillip Daniels.
Holliday's career is just really impressive, but only in hindsight. |
