Re: Winter Olympics Who's Watching
^ Great video but someone should shut up the nerds in the comments.
Example: While centrifugal force is - in a sense - "real," his use of the term is sloppy, to say the least. Centrifugal force exists in a rotating reference frame, in other words a non-inertial reference frame. Centrifugal force would emanate from the axis of rotation but would have no real source. This is why forces in non-inertial reference frames are often referred to as fictitious forces or pseudo-forces. But I don't think this is what he's referring to."Centrifugal force" can also refer to the reaction force to a centripetal force. In this case, Vonn would be exerting centrifugal force to counteract the centripetal force. But he clearly says, "to counteract centrifugal force ...", which tells me that he's simply making the common mistake of confusing centrifugal force with centripetal. Class dismissed. Dude no one cares that much. |
Re: Winter Olympics Who's Watching
Watched a bit of the downhill and the halfpipe last night. I can sum up NBC's coverage thusly: Lindsey Vonn, Lindsey Vonn, Shaun White, Lyndsey Vonn, Shaun White, Lyndsey Vonn, Shaun White knows Lindsey Vonn, Lindsey Vonn can spell Shaun White, ad infinitum.
Holy hell, it's almost as bad as NFL announcing where they continually blow whatever star is the subject of their story lines. Kept waiting for a list of "chuck norris facts" starring Vonn & White, the new dynamic duo. In other news, that Johnny Weir dude is approaching a new stratosphere of out and proud. Man should have marched in under a rainbow flag, not that there's anything wrong with that. Dude was wearing a friggin' bustiere with pink tassels. Only thing missing was him skating to "It's Raining Men." |

At the same time it's not hard to figure out with pics like this why the sport doesn't get the respect it deserves. |

Honestly, it's hard for me to understand any sport with "judges." Just doesn't compute for me. Give me something I can measure (not you, Johnny Weir). I want definitive winning and losing, not "oh, that pirrouette wasn't sassy enough, you get a 2.5." |
