I do consider Landry to be a good cover safety. Taylor's a hitter. Landry has the complete game...or at least he will once he gets some NFL experience.

Still, its hard to justify passing on a once in a lifetime prospect (Okoye) at a need position.

Love the player (Landry), hate the pick.
taylor has the complete game as well and was a better prospect than landry coming out dont forget that

Taylor gave up more than one touchdown last year. He gave up the Stephen Jackson touchdown run in overtime last year too. His play seriously regressed last year. He needs the talent around him in order to make plays.
taylor has the complete game as well and was a better prospect than landry coming out dont forget that
Was he a higher rated player?

Maybe so, I know Mayock had him as his number one rated player.

People fall in love with physical skills. It's the NFL, everyone is crazy athletic. The mental part is what seperates the players in this league.

I'm officially on record that Landry will be the better of the two safeties for his career.
and how was okoye a once in a lifetime prospect
Um...19 years old, 4 year college starter...

ESPN beat that into our heads for 5 straight weeks, remember?
Look, the D needs work from top to bottom--that's the sad truth. But finding a way to maximize Taylor's skills is a good idea. And if Landry can make that happen, right on.

The D line is going to have to be addressed in the future--maybe the FO is thinking one step at a time here--enough of half solutions and stop-gaps. We'll suffer some this year, and hit it next time.

(Probably as we speak, the FO is trading away the future in a blockbuster deal, but a guy can dream...)
This is the key. How can we get more out of our Taylor investment?

I have a hard time believing that was the deciding factor with the Landry pick. I'm wondering if we have any reason to believe that LaRon Landry can fix Sean Taylor's football instincts.

I'm not even sure Sean Taylor's intincts can be fixed by anyone but Sean Taylor. Maybe we are just going to have to accept the guy for what he is/will be, a respectable player and citizen who makes highlight reel hits on a consistent basis and gets burned a lot for touchdowns and long passes. Maybe this was the deciding factor in the Landry pick?

Maybe it was all about getting an impact safety for the future. Maybe GW doesn't trust Taylor as much as we think he does.

Or maybe none of this was ever in consideration and we just took Landry for the exact same reason we took ST, because he has good physical skills.

Well, hey, we can always draft another DB next year if this doesn't work out. (kidding people, only kidding)

if Taylor has a down season this year, what excuse are you going to use? because Landry is a rookie, still learning? how come people around here do not want to hold Taylor accountable for his own poor play? i like him as much as the next skins fan, but i still cant believe he made the pro bowl last year. what a joke

whoa. who says anyone is going to cut Taylor slack? Sure there is a lot of love, but that's b/c for his first two seasons, he was pretty much everything we expected. He had a down year. Was it b/c of coaching? The play around him? or just 'cause he is merely Roy Williams in a Skins jersey? It certainly seemed to be inconsistent with his prior play.

Given the problems w/ last year's defense, how about we hold off on the criticism and see, after this upcoming year, if it was warranted.

Given the problems w/ last year's defense, how about we hold off on the criticism and see, after this upcoming year, if it was warranted.
I may be coming off pestimistic, but I think he has as good of a chance of being an elite player as he does being a coverage-lacking bust. It's just that his performance last year was so perplexing. I don't know if it was an abberation, but I'm wondering exactly how it was an abberation. Biting on play action, undisciplined open field tackling, one INT on the season, it's hard to fathom any reason for these things happening other than thinking that these were always issues with the guy and they just never presented themselves in 04 or 05.

So maybe playing safety in the NFL is an easier position than we give it credit for, and Taylor is perfectly capable of 04/05 performance. Or maybe he's just not a good player. Three years in to his career, we have no idea, and that scares me.
