I heard that the deal wasn't done, and that the report was based on the Chicago Sun-Times article I posted. The article basically said that Briggs and the Skins had agreed upon contract terms, but the Redskins and Bears had not agreed upon trade terms. Maybe I'm wrong. |

Other than the ones I highlighted, none of these guys made the impact that people think the #1 pick should. So why should we spend the #1 pick and trade up to get that pick for the "cant miss" guy instead of filling needs!?!? Obviously the jury is still out on a few people. But Mike Williams of Detroit was a "Cant Miss" guy a couple years ago, and he was inactive most of the season. *I bolded the guys who have "Panned out" for the most part, and even a couple of those are a stretch
GMANC - wasn't Charles Rogers a "can't miss game changing WR" as well? Plus it pains me to remember this but anyone remember trading away multiple picks to get good old Desmond Howard - he was going to make the Skins unstoppable from what I remember. |
Re: Maske/JLC: Gibbs Hints Redskins Might Trade Up
Here's the problem I have with this. We just spend big bucks and picks last year to get Randle-El and Lloyd; two relatively young receivers who have shown they can play in this league. Furthermore, we have Moss and Cooley (who I'll count as a WR for these purposes).
Granted, neither Lloyd nor El put up stellar numbers but a.) we were dealing with a new offense that everyone admits takes a year to learn and b.) Jason Campbell was for all intents and purposes a rookie when he played in the back half of the season. CJ is great, no question about that. But why do we want to just give up on our current receivers-especially two guys we just spent big on just last year-after only one season in a new offense with a young quarterback. Why not let them grow together? If you want to tear that unit up then fine, but it's hard to listen then when you turn right around and talk about how we have no patience as a front office, and we need to develop our players and so forth. (and when I say "you" I'm addressing the universal "you")
While I'm personally against the trade (even though I hear "Calvin Johnson breaks the TD record and the redskins win the superbowl!" uncontrollably in my head) I think we should probably show the door to Brandon Lloyd. I think here is a case where we took a chance on a guy. We said, hey, this guy put up some decent numbers with a fairly mediocre QB throwing to him, seems not to be fitting in there, but we've got a lot of characters on our team. I mean look at portis, he's frickin insane. So yeah... maybe we'll be able to get more of those crazy diving catches on a regular basis. Problem is A) We were wrong about his attitude. This isn't some unique personality, he's just a big whiny baby. He acts like his shit doesn't stink, while everyone can smell him for miles. and B) He really isn't that good. Now I'm basing this off of my "gut" feeling, but I tend to think pound for pound ARE made a bigger impact on this team. Using statistics to defend your argument either way won't work, because of the situation of our offense, but I really think he's useless. I've heard the "Let the WR's gel together" argument, but I don't want the chance of our offense "gelling" and mid-season we have a mental breakdown, while throwing off the chemistry and rhythm of the season. I think we should axe Lloyd(who knows maybe try to get a 6 rnd pick for him), and either pick up a vet receiver or give Mike Espy a shot. I've gone from not sold on Lloyd, to irritated, to sold on throwing him over board. I am fickle, I know. |

Honestly, I'm rooting for the Bears on this one. Of course, I'll try and see the silver lining if this does go through, but it'll be tough. |
Re: Maske/JLC: Gibbs Hints Redskins Might Trade Up
Everybody is hot for some action. This is so un-Redskin like to have made so few moves in the spring. Until we signed Fabini a couple days ago, we had made only two out of town moves, Fletcher/Smoot. Therefore, since there's no moves to write or talk about, those yearning have been reduced to the pillow.

Uh Oh. Like, offer completed, and tendered? Or offer, completed, tendered, and accepted?

If we were talking about Dwaye Jarrett or the guy from Tenn. then it would be different. I would say keep who we have. It's not worth it. But if you have the chance to get Jerry Rice then you make the move. It's moot point. It looks like we are going to make the deal to Chi. Sports Talk 980 is reporting that we have made a contract offer to Briggs. 20 million in guar. money. |

Briggs would be a great addition, but I think we need a CB first. Well shit, I want my cake and eat it too, let's get both. |

Again, I think the offer to Briggs may be tendered and accepted. The offer to the Bears appears tendered, but under consideration and not yet accepted. |

I thought that type of money is for shutdown CB's like Champ Bailey - not OLB. Plus what effect would that have on our cap - especially when we need to resign Cooley - Schneed any thoughts on the cap implications of signing Briggs would be like and its effects on the Skins ability to resign Cooley next year? |

Here's the silver lining, the Skins trade out of a pick where they in all likelihood weren't thrilled with the idea of who would be available at #6. In addition they pick up a proven commodity in Briggs, who is a 26 year old stud OLB in this league. All of a sudden our LB corps. that was a serious weakness last year becomes a serious strength. And the cherry on top is we still have a 1st round pick to play with. I wouldn't rule out a possible trade back up. This is of course all dependent on whether or not the Bears want to play ball and accept this trade. I've heard that they aren't interested in moving to #6 and having to pay the kind of $$ involved with that high of a pick. So we'll see. |

Adalius Thomas received $20M guaranteed from the Patriots, so I don't think $20M for Briggs is too out of line. |
Re: Maske/JLC: Gibbs Hints Redskins Might Trade Up
I really hope this deal doesn't go through ESPECIALLY if his contract is anything like Dockery's. I agree that it would've been too much money to give Dock but seriously, why couldn't he get that money if we were going to become temporarily stupid this offseason.
Apparently a deal was reported on the John Thompson show that the deal for Briggs is done.
I just threw up a little bit in my own mouth. The only consolation I have is that this year is the deepest for D-line talent that I can ever remember seeing. Hopefully a guy like a Tim Crowder, Adam Carriker, Anthony Spencer will be around at 31. Dammit. We are so dumb. We spend a 2nd round draft pick to move up to get Rocky last year, we already have Marcus, and we just gave Fletcher-Baker $25M. WTF?? Now apparently $20M guaranteed to Briggs? Did we really need to spend nearly $50M on linebackers in one month?? The only thing I can think of is that Marcus' hip surgery is more serious than anyone let on, and/or Rocky is not what they hoped... |
