Wow, Jaws just gave us some props and listed the Skins as his winning team of the draft.
It really was a productive draft overall. For all those that thought it was a poor draft, you seem to forget that we have not been touted as having a good draft in seemingly decades. This was a good draft for us overall.

The undrafted free agent market just opened for the Redskins.

Just as interesting to see who we pick up in the undrafted ranks. You know ol' Danny can make it rain on these schlubs.

You're being too nice, for those that thought it was a poor draft sorry but you don't know what the F you are talking about. Most experts agree the Redskins came out of this draft as winners.

I think the skins did a pretty good job...I'd say solid B+. But hey, what the hell do we really know at this point.

Just thinking aloud, so we keep SM, ARE, Thomas, Kelly, & ______ (Mix or Thrash). Thrash might be gone.

Could the skins still trade one of our Rookie WR's later this spring? Hmmmmm.

I still think Mathis will be the 5th WR

Well we've now got:

Moss
Randle El
Mix
Thrash
Mathis
Thomas
Kelly

Who are the odd men out? Will Zorn carry 5 or 6 WRs?

Thrash won't make the roster IMO. Mathis only will if he's spectacular in the return game in pre-season.

Anthony Mix will be 4th or 5th Thrash is good but too old he is hitting what 32 or 33?

Ali Highsmith was very productive in college, but he is pretty undersized, and he can make plays.

Re: The official 2008 draft discussion thread

I say B-
They did pretty well on value early...but missing a potential Dline starter is a problem.
I hope they address this in FA or something.

Getting a Punter and a TE still have me scratching my head...and why draft 2 safty's when there are needs elsewhere....it not like Reed Doughty is horrible....but our pass rush depth is quite weak...both at DT and DE.

Too bad Colt Brennan may have probs adjusting to the NFL...I didn't know that.
In reality....who really expects anyone after the 5th round to make an NFL roster?
We should judge based off of that....
PS...I love the Oline pickup...that is potentially more important that 2 of our 2nd round picks

Id' say Mathis or Mix. I see them keeping Thrash b/c he's a good special teams guy and a great character guy.

I heard he had a terrible combine & ran like a 4.8 or 4.9 that is why he wasn't drafted.

all 3 are special teamers....the advantage for Mix is that he is huge.
With all the new return talent.....we could potentially ditch them all and be fine.

Ask another question....if we cut them....who would be the first to be picked up....it would be Mathis IMO

Re: The official 2008 draft discussion thread

I say we've done an overall good job. After EVERYONE (including me) complaining that the Redskins give up their draft picks away in trades for veterans, they've goen ahead and drafted 10 players...all of them which could be on the team or the practice squad come sept.

As many have said, we have free agency after the June 1st cuts and the undrafted free agents from which to pick depth at both lines. In regards to our O-line, I think our starting guys need to prove that they are worth keeping this year, otherwise in next year's draft we need to find flat out replacements. I think this year either through the draft or free agency we are looking for depth.

Re: The official 2008 draft discussion thread

i dont get why we took a TE when we have cooley and run a 1 TE system... I mean, at the time i was a bit mad, but we did get good value with the picks we made, even though i'm not super hot on the guys we got.

we passed merling, laws, campbell, scheuning, and caldwell at various points, but everyone we got is going to have 4 year deals at vet min at least, and we didn't reach at all. the problem with WRs is it may be years before we know if they're any good... at least kelly was drafted to a WCO though. in a vertical offense he'd look like mike williamd jr.

durant is a 4th round talent, horton is good depth (slow but productive, like doughty), shotgunning receiving targets might actually work out for us, since we have depth and only need one standout (like moss's first year) between the two new guys and moss.

i'm not sure the cbs are more than camp fodder or non starting depth and we didn't get anyone of note at OL/DL really...

look for rudolph hardie as the #1 UDFA for the skins... he has a real chance to get playing time if he lands here (went to hampton, we need DEs still, so it might work). highsmith is definitely worth getting in here too, and i think haynos might stop by, since he's really local.

The WCO typically uses a lot of 2 TE sets.
I heard he had a terrible combine & ran like a 4.8 or 4.9 that is why he wasn't drafted.
story, as I understand it, is that he felt pressured to run injured and ran a 5.1 and a 4.9 at the combine, but then ran a couple of 4.6s on his pro day.

There's no way he's a top lb in the sec while running a 5.1... ya know what I mean? And as a UFA there's nothing but upside bringing in a guy like that who has everything to prove.

One day Colt will win us a super bowl with Malcom Kelly and Devin Thomas as the starting WRs, and this draft will go down as one of the best of all time. Don't forget Mark Rypen was a 6th rounder too

Mathis is a goner. It's going to come down to Mix and Thrash. I'd say Thrash has the edge cause he can do more.

Re: The official 2008 draft discussion thread

jacksonville got 2 grade 1 pass rushers, miami got great talent (henne, merling, long - all three are long term starters at the 3 hardest positions to fill... i mean, wow). baltimore had 4 great picks after blowing it hard with flacco... GB did well, KC didn't get great value, but they got good players.

philly did well again... oakland not so much (great pick of chaz schilens in the 7th, but his career will probably die there). pitt took a bunch of players they plan to play immediately (again), and san diego got a steal on K brandon couto at pick 235 (don't they still have kaeding though?)

stl got long (DE) and great value with schuening in the 6th... they also grabbed vobora (LB) in the 7th (148 tackles last year) which is a steal. tampa bay reached a lot, but dre moore (DT) was a good pickup in the 4th (kinda wish we took him instead).

besides hardy (DE), haynos (TE), and highsmith (LB), i'd like to see giguere (LB) as a redskin too... he might go back to college though (canadian and does not have an agent).

out of 10 picks, i like 8 (even though i would have done things a bit differently). rob jackson and justin tryon don't really do much for me.

NFL decision-makers were a finicky lot at the NFL draft, making a record 33 trades on Saturday and Sunday, surpassing the previous record of 28 from the 2004 draft.

Thrash is a Gibbs-guy and, although I love his attitude, I doubt he'll be on the roster come September. Jerome "I hit fetuses" Mathis is likely gone as he has limited value as a receiver and we have enough return men on the roster. My guess is we start the season with Moss, ARE, Thomas, Kelly and perhaps Mix.

I'd put my money that we keep 5 or 6 wide receivers, if it's five wide receivers I think the guys would be Moss, El, Thomas, Kelly, and Mix, but if it's 6 then Thrash stays on the roster. Either way I don't see "Baby Beater" Mathis as anything more than training camp fodder, we don't need him at wideout and we don't need him to return anything.

Not to mention Devin Thomas is a very good return guy as well, which makes Mathis even more expendable.
