Re: Goodbye Doughty, Hello Horton!
I also like how humble the guy was. He said he was really nervous, but Landry said he went into the game saying "I got this." And he said himself that he was just in the right place. He has taken no more credit then that.
I don't want to piss on his parade too much but let's face it he happened to be around the ball which was good of course, but it's not like he made those plays on his own, he just happened to be in the right place at the right time. Still, I'll take it. 2 INTs and a fumble recovery is a nice day at the office.
Being in position and around the ball is not all just luck. If someone is constantly out of position and giving up big plays, would you just call him "unlucky"? Of course not. |
Re: Goodbye Doughty, Hello Horton!
I think Sean convinced God to send us Horton!!! He takes and he gives.
To steal a quote from the Wizard of Oz: "I Do Believe, I Do Believe, I Do I DO IDO!!! lol |

Buster ur right the kids a ball hawk just like Sean!

Re: Goodbye Doughty, Hello Horton!
This thread is so silly. Horton got some balls that were tipped right to his hands. The worst NFL defensive back makes those plays.
At least he caught the balls. That's something our DB's have been lacking, Rogers and Smoot in particular. This guy has a nose for the football whether you think he was lucky or whatever, he has been doing this since our 1st exhibition game. Is that just luck or a pattern to good instincts? |
Re: Goodbye Doughty, Hello Horton!

I was thinking that same thing on both picks too... "WOW, WE CAUGHT THE BALL!" |
Re: Goodbye Doughty, Hello Horton!
To confirm our player crush or whatever you call it, Yahoo sports had this to say:
• Redskins rookie safety and 7th-round draft pick Chris Horton, who snagged two pivotal Drew Brees interceptions and also recovered a key fumble Forget all the other stars, Horton was the difference maker in this game and should be defensive rookie of the week. |

They were tipped balls, not really a good indication of his coverage skills. All in all I was happy with his performance, I would just like to see a bit more of him before I bench Doughty in his favor is all. |
Re: Goodbye Doughty, Hello Horton!
Whoaaa! Let's hold off on the "Horton sent by Sean" and "Horton is the second coming of ST" talk.
He played well. By luck, instincts or some combination of the two, he was in the right place at the right time AND took advantage of the opportunities presented. I will wait to see about his coverage abilities and his ability to make open field tackles. What is his straight line speed, anybody know? Also, what was the knock on him coming out of college? I hope he continues to improve and be more than a one week wonder. But, as with the rest of the team, I am holding off judgment till week 6 or so. If he's starting and making plays then, it my time to fire up the bandwagon for him. |
Re: Goodbye Doughty, Hello Horton!
Has anyone mentioned the fact he perhaps blew his assignment on that safety blitz that left a wide open guy in the flats that went for a big completion?

If a safety blitz if called...his assignment is the QB. :D |
Re: Goodbye Doughty, Hello Horton!
I think he was picked and to sent to us by Sean Taylor, he's a playmaker, ballhawk and can hit. I can't wait to see until he polishes his game.
Yeah, he will get burned and make mistakes, he is a rookie after all, in the long run barring injury this guy will considered a steal. |
Re: Goodbye Doughty, Hello Horton!

The question is was he supposed to come on that blitz or not, at first look it appeared that he shouldn't have. |
Re: Goodbye Doughty, Hello Horton!
Nice game by Horton but it was just one game. A lot of the guys on the boards really seem to dislike Doughty and want to get rid of him, but it's too soon to tell. Horton is a rookie and even though he has a nose for the ball until he proves he can play great consistently Doughty still has that job, because even though Doughty isn't a playmaker, he is consistent.
I'd like to see if Horton can play like this consistently before I'd replace Doughty. Just look on the bright side, we have good depth at safety whether Doughty or Horton is lining up. |

A little heavy on the schmaltz, don't you think? |
Re: Goodbye Doughty, Hello Horton!
The one reason that Horton can't start from my POV is his jersey number. What type of safety wheres 48? We need to get him a cool number, maybe he could trade with Brooks for 14.
|
Re: Goodbye Doughty, Hello Horton!
That's my thinking as well.
I agree as well. But there is something to say about a player who has the knack to captialize and be in the right place at the right time. So many times I have seen balls like that fall to the ground and fumbles being recovered by the team that fumbled. Both of them are valuable to the team. But securing three turnover isn't a coincidence. |
Re: Goodbye Doughty, Hello Horton!
Doughty is an average safety. From what I've seen, so is Horton.
Doughty has been on this team for a few years, and he's still average. Horton has potential, and we need to see what's there. IMO, Horton should start until he shows otherwise. I just don't see much (if any) drop-off by replacing Doughty with Horton. |

He has upside and will only get better. Doughty is a veteran and propbably has reached his peak. Plus I think Horton has more speed and is more of a ballhawk which was evident in Saints game. |

Oh no question Horton has a nose for the ball and this might be turn out to be a real nice draft pick. I like his size, athletism and instincts. But let's not give the guy the starting job just cause he made some pretty easy INT's. I just don't think Horton is ready to be a full time starter. |
Re: Goodbye Doughty, Hello Horton!
I just don't think Horton is ready to be a full time starter.
Agreed, they should use him more in the rotation with Doughty until proven and who knows what Kareem Moore might be able to do when he gets healthy. This is a great position to be in. |
Re: Goodbye Doughty, Hello Horton!
Don't crap on Doughtry so quickly. I think Horton had a heck of a game and I think he just might be a great player some day, but he's still a rookie. Not every game is going to be this glamorous. Let him get burned once and we'll be calling for his head.
Well even though the TV schedule said I would see the Giants/Rams, I was pleasantly surprised that they actually showed the 'Skins/Saints yesterday. I was too caught up and "wowed" by Hortons nose for the ball. But I tend to agree with skinsguy here. I have read most of the posts in this thread and there is an overwhelming majority that see Horton as the new starting SS back there. In his first NFL start he had a great game, granted. But Matt Ryan had a great game in his first NFL start last week, and this week he laid an egg on the field. Just wondering that if Horton keeps the starting job, if and when he has a bad game, will all of those who want him to replace Doughty be screaming for Hortons head on a stick? Once you get on a bandwagon, it can be hard to get off. |

That shouldn't happen for a player that isn't that strong in coverage. |

Pretty easy INTs? Did you see how many INTs we dropped in the Giants game. Nuff said. |
Re: Goodbye Doughty, Hello Horton!
Zorn said in his presser that Doughty will be back in the starting lineup on Sunday.
"I don't know if [Horton] is ready yet to step in there every week and say he's a starter," Zorn said. "Reed Doughty is a guy that can get people lined up. There will be much more complicates situations that [Horton] would have to perform in to say that he is going to be the starter. But he certainly helped us have confidence in putting him in situations."
Zorn on Injuries, Special Teams - Redskins Insider |
Re: Goodbye Doughty, Hello Horton!
Level-headed decision. Horton will have his time. I've liked this kid since training camp but there is no need to rush things. Like I've said before, it's a great situation for us to be in.

Zorn on Injuries, Special Teams - Redskins Insider
I don't really believe him. Plus, he's kinda vague. He says Doughty can, "Get guys lined up." Big deal. So can Fletcher. Either way, get somebody else to, "Get guys lined up," -- or, better yet, get everyone to know their position on their own. Sounds like Zorn is just trying to avoid answering the question, and giving some bullshit excuse to keep Doughty in. Game changing plays are hard to come by, and I can't remember a single one Doughty has made in all the time he's been on this team. Before week 1, if you told me that Horton would finish the season with 2 INTs and a fumble recovery, I would have been happy. Hell, he's already done that in one game. I understand the plays were easy, and he'll have bad games. I just don't see any valid argument for starting Doughty. Does anyone here even think Doughty would finish the season with 2 INTs and a fumble recovery, if he starts the remaining games? I don't. |
Re: Goodbye Doughty, Hello Horton!
Honestly you guys should relax and take a step back. Horton did play well but,
1 not to take the starting job from doughty. 2 he wasn't tested 1v1 deep quite like Landry, so you can't really say with confidence that he's better then RD. 3. wait to get on the "Horton Train" till he plays a couple more teams with deep threats cause the Saints really had no one on the field who was a consistent deep threat. .... with all that said if he continually plays well or a least better then RD I 'd give him the starting job, preferably beginning next season |

Re: Goodbye Doughty, Hello Horton!
We'll see on Horton. This was just one game. He defintely earned more playing time...and if he keeps playing well he will play more then Doughty. To coin coach Denny Green though...we don't need to go crowning his arse just yet. The last thing we need to do is name this rookie the starter and put unecessary pressure or added attention on him.

Re: Goodbye Doughty, Hello Horton!
In summary: We should start Doughty because Horton is going to make mistakes. Weak.
I'd rather see Horton starting, and then just put Doughty in for all those "complicated situations". |
