if Mason has it, and could make the team, why not show case Betts. with the possibility of trading him? im not sure what the market would be. but he has shown he can carry the load. and has a really manageable salary
Betts showed last night why we need him as the back up to Portis. Mason did not look that good until the 2nd half when they had out their 3rd string scrubs.
There's a saying in the acting community that you will perform as well as you rehearse.

I seem to remember Portis not getting into his stride until several games into the season. I've never been a fan of Portis' pre-season attitude. Frankly, I think he needs the work.
Your comparing acting to football..lol

I guess when they start the game you would be like go out there and break a leg?

Rehearsal is called practice.

There's no contact in practice, dmv. That's the problem.

I was just be sarcastic. Furthermore. It may take a while for him to get up to game speed but not long. That is better than him being out for a year because of some freak injury. Him playing a couple of snaps is fine. But he is a veteran so he should be ok.

Whether they are hit in practice or not. Is not a issue. He has been in the NFL for years. I am sure that he's capable of taking a hit.

and freak injuries only occur when playing in the preseason?

I wont even say freak injuries. Lets say injuries. Injuries can occur in preseason which are games that dont count. so why have a greater probablilty of injury. They can happen walking down the street. But we are talking about practice which is more precautious than preseason games when the opponent doesn't care if he hurts you or not. You can slip on a wet spot on a wet floor and twist your ankle. The point is.. These games don't count so why risk it. Let him run the ball a few times. But limit it. There are players that are lost for the year on preseason games. Would you rather one of our star players get hurt in a preseason game? I know we have Betts. But are you willing to take that risk...or you just dont think CP is that valuable?

if your gonna hold prtis out of the game for fear of an injury, then every starter should be held out. clinton is important but so is campbell, the WRs, our TEs and the O-line.

Re: Portis to play Saturday - he doesn't seem too happy about it

DMV, I don't think anyone wants him playing a half. However, I want him to get his engine running. Take a few hits, etc. When he hurt himself in the preseason, he was going for a highlight reel type of hit instead of just pushing the guy out, or just letting him run by.

Re: Portis to play Saturday - he doesn't seem too happy about it

If he's going to run timidly because it's the preseason when he's out there, then whats the point? I'd love to see him get in there and get some contact before Week One, but if he's just going to run with his head down like he did against Buffalo, he's not gaining anything by being out there.

Re: Portis to play Saturday - he doesn't seem too happy about it

Portis needs to be in game shape. Also he needs to be able to play more than 4 running plays before coming out. I'd like to see him hit the holes hard tonight and stop tipping around. If he can do that for 2 series I'd be satisfied.

I know. I saw the game. JT is a perfect example of what I meant. Luckily it was not as serious as they frist thought. But I agree he does need some running plays.

Re: Portis to play Saturday - he doesn't seem too happy about it

I want to see Portis in a baseball cap on Thursday. He doesn't need to be in the game for any reason. Betts needs to learn how to hold on to the f*cking ball so he needs the carries on Thursday. For all of the Betts fanboys out there, THAT'S the reason he's not a starting RB in the NFL.

Re: Portis to play Saturday - he doesn't seem too happy about it

I think that Portis actually played really well during the limited time he was in there. I think that what contributed to the loss on Sat was the fact that we did throw quite a bit and we didn't use a deeper drop. I know in the West Coast offense you have shorter drops and you have get the ball out quick, but when you are getting back in three step drops and you aren't able to get the ball out because the lineman are getting beat then it isn't necessarliy the QB's fault and it isn't the line's fault. The play calling is what needs to be adjusted. It is possible that Zorn may need to learn that a diverse play calling set will settle the line and also slow the down rush when you use more running plays and deeper drops.

I liked Mason...is it time to cut rock loose and get some fresh legs in there? Over the past few years although rock has been solid...hes been unspectacular, not very dynamic. Thoughts?

Are you getting kind of tired of Portis remarks concerning playing in pre-season? Check out the Portis int for 8-26.

No question, he's a baller in the game, who I have great respect for, but.....get over it. Maybe for 48m p/hour to play a game, you can shut your mouth and go to work.
You ain't L.T.

Hes not LT..but still can you blame him? every hit he taes is one less run in his career. Hes been injured and hes a baller, i can understand his frustration. With the type of numbers he posts i think hes more than proven himself to rest up

I hear you, but........
It's a dangerous game.
I might point out, he is WELL compensated for that reason, and to do whatever the coach and the team might require of him (whenever they require it) that does not violate the players contract, etc. While Portis has no doubt been an asset to this team, and continues to be, he needs to put his head down, and go to work. (IMO)
For the good of the team, and perhaps not his personal interests

Portis is never going to be happy about playing in the preseason, it's just how he is. He might complain about it a bit, but in the end he goes out there and straps on his helmet and plays.

Cannot be denied!
When he hits the field, he's all business!
Maybe, I'm just a ............little sensitive?

I can see his comments can be annoying... I just chalk it up to CP being CP. As you say when he hits the field he's all business so I guess that's all that really matters.

Re: Portis to play Saturday - he doesn't seem too happy about it

Its a good thing that all of our starters don't take this attitude. What makes him more special then any other starter playing in preseason as we need them all. Maybe he is worried that he might get hurt and Betts shows he can move the ball just as well as he? This guy gets paid millions so he needs to keep his thoughts to himself.

Since when does a person's paycheck determine what they can and can't say??

He's certainly entitled to having an opinion, no?
