Re: Mock Draft Commentary
I thought there was more pressing needs on their teams other than RB I thought wimbley was gonna be automatic after KC didn't pick him but I was wrong.
I am shocked with the patriots pick.
not as shocked as i am with the chiefs picking a DE (which isn't a need) :( jared allen had 11 sacks last year and their #2 is under contract for 5 more years... in a cover 2, i'd figure having at least 1 good cb would be kinda useful since they only have 1 cb with under 9 years xp (And one of last year's starters is gone) and their safeties have been in the league 7 and 10 years. or maybe taking santonio holmes since kennison is ancient and none of their guys are all that good there. all the above is imho. |

The starter that is gone is McCleon, who was trash. He was burned for more touchdowns than Harris was for us. under 9 year xp??? what are you talking about they have Surtain and Warfield (who is a solid corner). There are many good safeties who will fall into later rounds an example last year was Chris Harris of the Bears wo took Mike green's spot in the starting line up and finished with 58 tackles and 3 picks. He was a 6th round pick. Not to mention, that KC is the front runner to land Ty Law this offseason. Reynaldo Hill another example had 3 picks for the titans and was a 7th round pick last year at cb, while Pac-Man Jones, their first had none... Craphonso Thorpe is in his 2nd year and comming back off of injuries which could make an impact at wideout. KC is not done by a long shot hommie dont' count them out. As for the Dend pick, let me respond to that by saying First as a Redskins fan especially ~ you should know that the length of someones contract in the NFL doesn't mean shit. Barber had a five year contract with the Chiefs, where is he? Wynn is like Hicks just average and Hicks will be replaced just like Wynn. 2nd With an adequate pass rusher on both sides, it won't matter as much who is at cb because a rushed qb will give up picks. Hicks may also be moved to the inside, the chiefs needs help making tackles and creating pressure if you know their d-coordinator Gunther Cunningham is all about creating pressure and blitzing |
Re: Mock Draft Commentary
The Chiefs need a lot of D-line help. I think they really need a tackle, but outside of Allen, they have little at end. Carlos Hall is a decent pass rusher, but is on a one year deal.

I didn't write all that information for my health :/ honestly, with warfield and madison still there, do you think i'd list CB as a DIRE need? http://www.nfl.com/players/playerpage/12796 |
Re: Mock Draft Commentary
McNeill played with Carnell Williams two years ago at Auburn, and happens to be the best available tackle in the draft. Tampa may be a west coast offense, but the line needs a lot of help. The defense needs youth, but with plenty of rounds left, that wasn't an immediate concern.

Re: Mock Draft Commentary
great pick gtripp
|
Re: Mock Draft Commentary
even with warfield gone (which I didn't notice). I'm banking on them getting law and possibly a decent db fit for a cover 2 in the second or third
|
Re: Mock Draft Commentary
Tough choice between whitner (real speed boost at SS), gabe watson (safer pick), and the other CBs (youboty, joseph). The bengals need more speed and depth in a suspect secondary, and this is a good first step. Cromartie is one of the biggest CBs in the league at 6'3" and with his speed, shouldd pose problems for oppossing QBs. He's also a ball hawk and could probably play at S if he's needed there. Keeping him on the field at all times is very important.
I would have liked to trade down a bit, but I do think cromartie is extremely undervalued after missing a year. Though he will require time to get up to speed, the CB situation will allow him to start as the #3 and work his way up while protecting the team with quality depth. |
Re: Mock Draft Commentary
You're listening to Mock Talk on WPSN with Brud and TAF. We're happy to have NY Giants GM Matty K with us right now.
Matty, you guys have recently signed free agent DBs Jason Bell, Will Demps, R.W. McQuarters, and Sam Madison. Now with the 25th pick you went out and got South Carolina's Jonathan Joseph. Have these moves been made in response to the Cowboys getting TO, and the Redskins adding Randle El and Lloyd? Does the fact that you didn't draft an OLB mean you think you guys are close to signing LaVar? Brud, you want to chime in? |

The Cowboys signed TO and already have Glenn, and the Eagles signed Gaffney and have some young talent like Reggie Brown. Joseph is a bit raw but the kid has wheels, we feel we can bring him along slowly with the vets we acquired. As for LaVar, we'd love to have a LB with his talent, but there is a huge gap in the contract talks. There were some LB's we were targeting that were off the board before our pick so we went with the best player available and we felt that was Joseph. |
Re: Mock Draft Commentary
Originally I was looking for Moss at this pick as a compliment to Muhammad. Since he was gone, I went with who I thought was the next best offensive threat. Pope is a decent blocker and a very good pass catching TE that is only going to get better. He will give Grossman another big target, especially in the red zone, and create some serious mismatches with his size.

Re: Mock Draft Commentary
Santonio holmes continues to plummet down the board. Maybe his dropped passess are catching up with him? Maybe teams needs feel like other need are more important right now...
|
Re: Mock Draft Commentary
We the Jaguars went with Demeco Ryans because we felt we needed to address the OLB position after the loss of Akin Ayodele to the Dallas Cowbitches. it is true that we have expressed intrest in LaVar Arrington, but we feel at this point that we needed to fill this position regardless of Arrington arriving or not. we feel demeco is a very special player and can help us immediately

Holmes went already...Denver I believe at #22. |
Re: Mock Draft Commentary
Scout.com's 5 best available:
1. Kamerion Wimbley, DE/OLB, Flordia State 2. Tamba Hali, DE, Penn State 3. Manny Lawson, DE/OLB, North Carolina State 4. Donte Whitner, S, Ohio State 5. Eric Winston, OT, Miami |
Re: Mock Draft Commentary
The Jets are excited about taking center Nick Mangold with the 29th overall selection. Not a very sexy pick, but he's a guy that can step right in and fill the huge gap that was left behind from Kevin Mawae and be the anchor of the Jets line for the next decade.

That's a great pick, IMO I think this guy is going to be very good and it feels an obvious need. |
Re: Mock Draft Commentary
Carolina took care of one of their major needs with this pick, and are currently working out a deal to move up into the early 2nd round to draft the other major need. The team will be pretty complete if they get the guy they want, look out for the panthers in the nfc east title game next year.

Where they have the honor to be destroyed by Washington. |
Re: Mock Draft Commentary
the colts taking addai is alittle bit of a reach, but i was unsucessful in trying to trade up.addai has good hands and probably the best of the rb's in pass protection.mayock from the nfl channel said he had a good combine.i think the colts are going to end up with maroney from minn

Re: Mock Draft Commentary
u should have looked to KC we were more than willing to move down but found no sutiors at the right price
|
Re: Mock Draft Commentary
With the loss of Steve Hutchinson. We felt we needed to fill a big hole on our offensive line. We've been scouting Max since day 1 and he has been near the top of our board through out workouts and the combine. We think we grabbed one of the most dominating linemen in the draft this year.
|
Re: Mock Draft Commentary
As GM of the Titans, we were pleased that the Chiefs showed interest in our draft pick. This trade allows us the potential to pick up another athlete to compete on this team for a starting spot.
|
Re: Mock Draft Commentary
The Steelers are old and thin at DE. Tamba Hali is a top talent DE with a non stop motor. He is a great worker and the type of blue collar player that Coach Cowher turns into stars. Many may think we should have used this pick on a WR because of Randel- EL leaving but our situation with Ward, Wilson, and Morgan is one we are comfortable with. We may add WR depth in a later round. Others might say we should have went DB. Our CB's are deeper than people give us credit for with Townsend and Taylor starting and second year guy McFadden and 3rd year Colclogh working in certain packages. Also we have Polamalu and Clark at S with Carter at backup. Hali fills the need of youth and a pass rusher for the DE position. We feel he will be a great player for our organization.
|
Re: Mock Draft Commentary
Al Davis is hoping just for once, he gets someone to fall to him. Anyway, great pick by the Steelers.
|
Re: Mock Draft Commentary
The Texans had a competition brewing for the first pick in the 2nd round. We were not excited about any of the available players, and relish the oppertunity to stockpile draft picks, not only this year, but next year also, and move down the board.

gtripp, how close to the real thing do you think ours did?

Re: Mock Draft Commentary
gtripp, how close to the real thing do you think ours did?
its reasonable... dallas probably wouldn't take a corner, KC is more likely to go DB, detroit might wait a year before drafting another QB (in which case Jimmy williams would have probably been the pick). Bengals might be more likely to take gabe watson, and indy would probably wait on an rb if addai was the best left by their pick (trade down, draft gilles, etc). Lawson, wimbley, and jason allen would have probably gone earlier too (though lawson is a great talent, he's a bit pigeon holed as a 3-4 OLB). it could turn out exactly like it has too, those are some of the possibilities though. |
Re: Mock Draft Commentary
thats the best thing about a mock draft... we won't know until draft day regaurdless of the pick what will happen. no matter what any self-proclaimed expert might think
|
Re: Mock Draft Commentary
carolina was able to lock up two players which will fill their needs. Trading for houston allowed for the panthers to get bobby capenter to help with the defense, and they also added lawrence maroney to help the ground attck on offense late in the second round. Some may say they traded alot to get the 33rd pick, but with a solid team to begin with and the addition of these two guys theres not much more they can draft that will be better than what they already have.
|
Re: Mock Draft Commentary
not a bad move. thats a 260lb LB... big guy.
|
Re: Mock Draft Commentary
while CB is also an important need, I thin winston was the best available for the saints and he can pair with jammal brown for a really over-athletic duo at OT. Winston is a bit more of a project than i'd like, but his upside merits the investment, as his versatility (TE/OG/OT) is very enticing. It looks like 2006 is going to be a year to gain experience and find the best possible OL combination from the available pieces.
I really wanted to take mangold here, but since he was gone, some help to keep brees alive is sorely needed. stincomb can move to LG and leave only the C and CB position as a truly glaring need which will have to be filled. |
Re: Mock Draft Commentary
gtripp, how close to the real thing do you think ours did?
Fairly accurate. I think some guys fell a lot farther then they will (Huff, Wimbley). No huge reaches really. I think the problems with this draft aren't in trades that were made, but the trades that weren't able to be made because of a lack of quick communication. But thats why its a mock. |
Re: Mock Draft Commentary
The Jets are excited to grab safety Darnell Bing with their #35 overall pick. Bing is a physical safety that plays the run well and has a good mix of size and speed.
|
Re: Mock Draft Commentary
A lack of a physical and bulky DE, viable at this point in the draft, to play the run meant we needed to add at our other primary area of need: S.
With the Jets stealing Bing the Packers went for the next best option. Simpson is a superior athlete with good size. He needs to add bulk and work on discipline and technique but overall he has the most upside of any Safety in the draft outside of Huff. |
Re: Mock Draft Commentary
With a depleted secondary, the niners selected a versatile DB to help revamp their defense. He is a fast safety who runs corner time (4.39) - 40 yard dash.
