Re: Lavar has been missused...
are you kidding me? have you ever seen lavar get in a three point stance and do anything productive? the dude is not a pass rusher. he seemed to shy away from contact when williams would send him on blitzes this year. he's lost his explosiveness/mojo (self admission) and will be a june cut. for all his drama and expense, what has lavar arrington produced for us? i can think of two plays...the int for td against carolina long, long ago and the KO shot (in a losing cause) on aikman. many of his pro bowl/beauty pageant trips were un-earned. the one season under marvin lewis was perhaps his only legit trip to the 50th. it's time for 56 to go away. if we cut him, watch the market. the market will show you what other teams think of this dude. he's a hype machine and danny's made him a millionaire.
Welcome to the warpath 81toHOF. Good to have another fan on board. In regard to your comments about Arrington only making two plays over his career, turns out he has made more impact plays for us than you might think. For example, remember that game against the Rams when he sacked Kurt Warner and stripped the ball near the goal line in the closing minutes. We wouldn't have won if it weren't for that. And what about that interception against the Bucs in this past playoff game? Don't get me wrong, I'm not completely advocating that we keep the man, but give him credit for playing well in previous years. The man gave our defense an attitude and ferocity back when the 'skins were a struggling team. |

For all the Lavar Bashers...I'm not sure where all the negativity towards Lavar is coming from but it is not deserved. This guy has been the face of our franchise since he came on board and is guilty of nothing but wanting to win. Who cares if he's overpaid, I ain't mad at him for that. It's not our place as fans to hold a grudge against him for that matter...let the front office handle it. By mid season next year I would like to see what everyone has to say when Lavar is starting and the skins are winning. Yeah I said it "starting"...It's funny to here some of the comments in this thread about Chris Clemons (a guy who has done absolutely nothing for this franchise) being capable of replacing Lavar. Lavar is a rare talent and he can't be replaced...where else can you find a player that actually loves his team and wants to remain there his entire career. He'll get everything worked out and have the pads on next year; then I would like to see what everyone has to say about wanting Lavar out and saying he's "washed up"; its BS. I got the funny feeling that Lavar will leave this game similar to the way that Bradshaw did...never wanting to return to D.C. because all of the spoiled fans who don’t appreciate a guy who lays it all on the line for their city. You guys are falling into the medias trap, believing that Lavar is this selfish player who only cares about money. While everyone is focusing on how much money he makes, they seem to be overlooking his production late in the season and in the playoffs; he may never be 100% again but 50% of Lavar will always be better that 100% of Clemons.

Who is bashing him?? We're simply stating the facts, his cap number is a burden, Gregg Williams has had plenty of success with him NOT in the lineup, so where's the bashing?? As I've said before, there are a select few who may hate on him unfairly, but for the most part people just don't feel he's worth his cap number, simple as that. People need to take the emotions out of the equation and look at this situation as a pure business decision, because I guarantee you that's how the Redskins are looking at it. I'm a huge LaVar fan and I'd love to see him stay with the Redskins, but the writing is on the wall, it appears as if his time here is winding down. That's life. His relationship with the team and with some fans has become strained, it might be best for both sides to start fresh. |

Who cares what he makes? You really must be kidding. In case you haven't noticed the Skins have some cap issues that need resolving, and a LB who has a monster contract and has had injury concerns the last 2 years most certainly is a key issue at hand. As for the "BS everyone is putting him through", please spare me from the poor, poor LaVar take. The guy has brought alot of this crap on himself. |

This is just a silly statement. Let's expand on this. Who cares what any player makes? Umm, the Eagles & Terrell Owens, the Jets & Chad Pennington, Fred Smoot, Shaun Alexander, Antwan Randle El, players' agents, cap analysts & a little mom -n-pop business known as the National Football League. |

Re: Lavar has been missused...
Speaking for myself, I'm not anti-Lavar. I just don't think he deserves a ton of money. He is still a solid football player, certainly better than his replacement Warrick Holdman. When he is in the lineup, our defense undoubtedly becomes more dangerous. But his production over the past two seasons does NOT justify a hefty contract that will count heavily against the cap.

Re: Lavar has been missused...
I think what some of us fail to realize is that the NFL is a business. When we cheer for our team, we see burgundy and gold. We relate to the game from a fan standpoint, for the most part, and fail to see the business aspect of running a profitable, winning franchise. Unfortunately, sometimes in that order.
We've been very fortunate over the past several decades to have such a rich winning tradition. In part because our team competes in market where the city loves and embraces it's team, and in part due to shrewd management. You can never discount the value of good ownership, which sometimes requires to part with people that have done you a lot of good in the past. All I'm saying is, yes, LaVar is probably one helluva guy, but at the end of the day we have a limited amout of money to go around to a limited personnel. And by neccessity we have to make some very hard and difficult decisions and move on. |

I thought the hat made a bold statement about the emptiness of material striving in a post-post-modern landscape that has been stripped of all that is beautiful and true. More ironic than hilarious, it forces the viewer to confront his own ambivalence about the Corporatocracy. way to be unnecessarily divisive. IF he does well that's great, but i doubt he'll outplay his contract, which means I'll still think re-allocating that money to more dire needs (WR, DE) would have been a better idea. When healthy i don't really have any complaints about his talent or his play. but when you compare him to a 12mill income and the salary cap problems and glaring needs at other positions the situation looks different. |

no cba, no restructure, nuked roster. he said he's willing to rework his deal, but no one knows to what extent, and we've got lots of money committed next year to a lot of players, so we'll have the same trouble next year. I don't know how saying someone could be a cap casualty is bashing them though... that makes no sense, that' just how it might work out. This is also a forum, if we just let everything work itslef out without saying anything... then why are we here? AP and marhall both came out of nowhere, two years in a row. the chance of having it happen again aren't great, but it could happen. marshall filled in very well for lavar. |

Re: Lavar has been misused...
I'm betting that Lavar is a Redskin next season. He's willing to restructure and the implications of a release/trade are spelled out below:
Washington Redskins What happened last year? Washington made an improbable run into the divisional round of the playoffs after starting the season 5-6. The run was improbable to most but not to loyal readers of the FOXSports.com power rankings, which had them ranked 10th in the NFL before they began their run to the playoffs. On offense, Washington was No. 12 in DVOA (up from No. 28 in 2004), No. 10 in passing offense and No. 9 in the league when running the ball. The Redskins' defense was stellar once again, ranking only behind Chicago in our overall defensive rankings, finishing seventh in the league against the pass and fourth against the run. Washington's special teams were 14th in the league, despite an exceptional year from punter Derrick Frost and his coverage team — the second best unit in the NFL according to our rankings. Who's leaving? When it comes to salary cap management, the Redskins are the polar opposite of their division rivals in Philadelphia. While the Eagles enter each off-season with more salary cap space than they know what to do with, Washington stumbles in millions over the cap, having to cut veterans or restructure their contracts to make up for the millions of dead money that inevitably finds its way into Washington's cap figure. Washington is reportedly $20 million over the cap, with two players — linebacker Lavar Arrington and tackle Chris Samuels — with cap values of more than $10 million each. Although the team does not have many potential unrestricted free agents (safety Ryan Clark being the only starter), the team could lose some familiar faces as it tries to cut at least $20 million off of its cap. The Washington Post has a nice article on Washington's salary cap situation, detailing the myriad of ways the Redskins can get under the salary cap. Some players will need to be cut (center Cory Raymer, safety Matt Bowen, kicker John Hall), while others will need to restructure bonuses due to them in 2006 (quarterback Mark Brunell, running back Clinton Portis, defensive tackle Cornelius Griffin); and Patrick Ramsey will likely be traded, just to give Washington enough room under the cap to make some minor free-agent moves. If Washington wants to make a major free agent acquisition, it's likely that Arrington will need to restructure his contract. Cutting or trading Arrington is not a realistic option for Washington, as either will cost the Redskins $12 million in dead money. The team did spend over $9 million in cap space last year, so that Laveranues Coles could play for the Jets — meaning that option shouldn't be ruled out. Who Should They Sign? Washington's biggest need on offense is a wide receiver to take some attention away from Santana Moss. While Moss gained 1483 yards in 2005, the rest of the wide receivers on Washington's roster combined for only 529 yards. Indianapolis Colts receiver Reggie Wayne is the biggest potential free agent on the market, but Washington will need to get extra creative with its restructuring to get far enough under the cap to afford him. The aforementioned Jurevicius and Randle El are more likely targets. Another receiver name to keep in mind is New England Patriots receiver David Givens. Last year, the Redskins tried to bring some New England magic to Virginia by signing David Patten to serve as their second receiver. Patten was a huge disappointment, gaining only 217 yards in the air on a paltry 9.9 yards per catch. Givens, however, is a better bet than Patten was last year. Givens is six years younger than Patten and has much better hands. Since 1998, Patten has caught only 48 percent of the balls thrown in his direction. Givens has managed to haul in 58 percent of passes thrown to him in his four-year career. The Redskins will also need to acquire some depth on their offensive line. With Raymer a likely cap casualty, and guard Ray Brown's retirement after a 20-year career, Washington will be left with no backup with any NFL experience for guards Randy Thomas and Derrick Dockery and center Casey Rabach. Veteran lineman Bob Hallen, who has started 47 games in his eight-year career with the Falcons and Chargers at both center and guard, could be a good fit in Washington. The former second-round pick was unable to hold onto a starting job in either Atlanta or San Diego, but his versatility — and likely cheap price tag — is exactly what Washington needs to beef up its offensive line. |
Re: Lavar has been misused...
You know who else has been misused? Mark Brunell, it's obvious that he's slow and has a noodle arm. I vote we move him to fullback and move Portis to qb. It seems like every pass Portis throws is for a touchdown. Portis is the man yo!

Hey, Portis has thrown some nice spirals! But I'm sure at some point he'd start referring to himself as "Mr. Dollar In, Quarter Back," or "Seventy-Five Cent" for short. |
