Re: Redskins trade for Alex Smith
I know people said for the longest time that KC's Twitter feed didnt mean anything (looking at S10 here) but look at Alex Smith's:
https://twitter.com/QBAlex_Smith He's photoshopped himself (although kinda looks like KC) and his main image is the Skins offense on the sideline. KC's has said "Business Inquiries: Luke Munson luke@lwsports.net" There is a huge difference.
Kirk wanted out all along, everyone knew that Smith looks good in a skins jersey, and 11 is a good number for us |
Cousins is gonna make a killing in free agency now.
My guess is highest paid player in the NFL at a 27 million per year clip. That's insane
So you’re hammering the FO for signing someone else, who, by all fair accounts should perform as well as KC for a lot less $$$, at least for the next 2-3 years. I know, i like Fuller too, but he’s just not worth the same as a good starting QB. The die was cast 2 years ago when we told KC to “prove it.” And not many here were clamoring that we should give KC a long term deal at that point, perhaps you were. After that, the FO had zero options, assuming you wanted KC to Continue to play for us. There was absolutely no point at which KC was agreeing to a long term offer. None. So stop hammering the FO and the Redskins about this and give Kirk credit for playing things just right in a way no one had done before. And Kirk got lucky that we protected him well for both those seasons. Had he gotten hurt this story would have ended differently. |
I know I may be a smith critic but when you look at that trade you guys will hopefully score big for cousins. I would take cousins in a minute over smith but I understand his contract demands putting you off. We had a similar situation with houston. Waited too long to extend him now he makes almost brady money at outside lb. Knowing what a qb driven league it is I feel for skins fans such a tough spot no right answer. Sign cousins you payed too much let him walk and a potential if not already franchise qb leaves.
Well “Brady money” is less than $10M a year, since he gives the Patriots a huge hometown discount. Nice to have a wife that makes the big money... Maybe you meant “Stafford money.” Lol |

"Washington is very fortunate to have a quarterback in Alex Smith. My year with him was one of my favorite years of football," Foles said. "Just being there in Kansas City, getting to work with him, seeing a guy that for some reason people critique all the time, I mean, the guy's a winner. I mean, look at him. Look at what he did this year and he just keeps coming. He keeps getting better." That is a huge key, Smith is smart and can teach a young guy the ropes as well. Also dude will be hungry to prove all the doubters wrong over the years. |

Foles is going to say all the right things. I'll say one more thing regarding Colt. Back in May I went out to Redskin Park for an OTA practice. I have a business relationship w/ 980. Several people were invited and we could stand right next to the field. The players were just a few feet away. That day you COULD NOT tell the difference between Kirk and Colt. There were no pads of course but both guys really threw the ball well. Sudfeld struggled as his passes wobbled in the wind. But Colt ran the 2nd team and made nice passes into the wind down the field. He took more chances that day with the ball while Kirk played it safe for the most part. Obviously it's an OTA practice, but he's better than a lot of you think. He's been in the offense for several years and it would not surprise me if he outplays Smith during pre season. I'll leave it at that... |

Re: Redskins trade for Alex Smith
Alex Smith has got better each year. He is way better than he was on the 49ers and had great season last year. I like all that extra cap space. Should be able to bring back Brown and get another good player or 2 just with money saved on Smith's hit this year vs. What Cousins' will likely be.

Re: Redskins trade for Alex Smith
I'll watch film of Alex Smith, before that, here are stats of Smith and Cousins when facing the same defenses, in 2017:
-Against the Eagles: Smith 21/28, 251yards, 1 TD (21 rush yards) sacked 4 times / Cousins 23/40 240 yards, 1 TD 1 INT (30 rush yards) sacked 4 times and Cousins 30/40 303y 3 TDs 1 INT (18ry) 4sacks -Against the Chargers: Smith 16/21 155y 2TDs (9ry) 5sacks and Smith 23/30 231y 2 TDs (13ry) 1sack / Cousins 15/27 151y 1TD 1INT (8ry) 2sacks -Against the Raiders: Smith 25/32 342y 3TDs (0ry) 1sack and Smith 20/34 268y 0TD 1INT (24ry) 4 sacks / Cousins 25/30 365y 3TDs (2ry) 1sack -Against the Broncos: Smith 14/31 202 1TD (33ry) 1sack / Cousins 19/37 299y 3TDs 1INT (8ry) 0sack -Against the Cowboys: Smith 25/34 263y 2TDs 1INT (19ry) 2sacks / Cousins 26/39 263y 1TD 1INT (0ry) 4sacks and Cousins 26/37 251y 2TDs 2INTs (6ry) 4sacks -Against the Giants: Smith 27/40 230y 0TD 2INTs (27ry) 1sack / Cousins 19/31 242y 2TDs 1INT (4ry) 6sacks and Cousins 20/37 158y 0TD 3INTs (12ry) 3sacks So, on common opponents this season: Smith averaged 242,75 yards - 1,38 TDs - 0,5 INTs - 2,25 sacks Cousins averaged 252,44 yards - 1,77 TDs - 1,22 INTs - 3,11 sacks I'm not trying to read too much out of these, and am well aware that football is the ultimate team sport, QB is the ultimate dependable position, and Smith had a running game that Cousins didn't have. But, I do think these numbers show you Smith is far from being a dramatic downgrade from Kirk, and he sure seems to be throwing less INTs than Kirk. I still think Cousins can be a better QB considering what he's been capable to do under pressure behind a battered OL. I also think we got the best replacement available. |

Re: Redskins trade for Alex Smith
seems like you and I are the only ones not mad about this move, I actually LOVE it
I still say this was the best available option left for Washington. However, that being said, nothing can diminish the fact that the front office is replacing a 29-year old starting QB with a career passer rating of 93.7 with a 33-year old QB with a career passer rating of 87.4. They surrendered a very talented CB and a 3rd round pick as well. All it did for the Chiefs was give them 17 million more in cap room and make their defense better. The irony of the deal is they are paying the 33-year old today, what they could have signed the 29-year old for 2 years ago. |
Re: Redskins trade for Alex Smith
I'm with you guys.
Well, let's put it this way: 1) I love having Alex Smith here. Solid starter that can take us all the way with the team around him. Or at the very least win games while we develop a prospect (which we could draft this year, next year or the year after that). 2) But I do think the Chiefs "won" that trade, if I'm a Chiefs fan I'm thinking: -We have our QB of the future -We freed 17M in cap room, and Smith was only here for one more year anyway -We got a rising young corner... And a 3rd, we'll take that! So, not sure I LOVE the trade, but I do love that we solved our QB situation at a reasonable price and can move on!
Chiefs were going to "win" that trade no matter who the trading partner was. They were in the driver's seat with reportedly six teams interested. We showed that we wanted him more, and for longer than the other teams. I'm good with that considering the alternatives. |
