Except this HAD to be done. There wasn't any other choice that wouldn't have incited fan riots.
If you think about it, we're in uncharted territory now -- Schottenheimer, Gibbs and Shanahan all had the dual role of head coach & general manager/player-personnel decider-in-chief. Then you had Spurrier and Zorn being fed with players from Bozo the Clown. Now there's a guy from the outside with football acumen, and a resume of success at picking out talent. Dare I say it ... but, ... it's different this time.
I agree... The big thing to keep in mind is this will take time. Stay away from the quick fix. Snyder's past as an owner is full of examples of quick fix failures. We need to let the team building grow over time. Shut the big mouths of the impatient mob. |
I hope this franchise doesn't drive him to drink again. I'm not totally joking
He is responsible for drafting most of the 49er roster that played in 3 straight NFC championship games, then was basically fired for too much drinking, then went to Seattle and helped them over the top then canned again for hitting the bottle too much. When with the 49ers there were a lot of pictures of him obviously drunk at team facilities. Listing to sports radio the talking heads say he is still drinking but has it under control. He sounds like someone who needs to never have another drink. He is one of the best, Snyder should hire someone to keep an eye on him to make sure he keeps the drinking under control. He lost two jobs and a marriage and went to rehab, I don't think he should drink at all. |
Re: Scot McCloughan to be new Redskins GM
Since AJ Smith is not GM, are we still getting Wade Phillips?

Re: Scot McCloughan to be new Redskins GM
I'm already penciling in two pre season wins.
|
Re: Scot McCloughan to be new Redskins GM
I couldn't be more happier with this move. Snyder has tried everything but hire a competent GM. He's hired HoF and a future HoF coach. He brought in big name free agents. He's tried hiring no name head coaches. This man has tried everything. Finally, I think he got it right. Scot McCloughan is one of the best talent evaluators and roster builders in football. If we can control his drinking problem he can do some great things. In my opinion, this is just what this organization needed.
|
Re: Scot McCloughan to be new Redskins GM
Good move but until we improve I won't get to excited
|
Re: Scot McCloughan to be new Redskins GM
So, where does this leave AJ Smith? Cooling his heels on the West Coast?
I am okay with that, but am just curious on the significance. |
Re: Scot McCloughan to be new Redskins GM
AJ's role may not change at all at best. Very possible he's gone completely.
|
Re: Scot McCloughan to be new Redskins GM
This move is just what the doctor ordered.....McCloughlin will be the best GM we have had since Bobby Beathard.....
|
Re: Scot McCloughan to be new Redskins GM
I really like this move and hope the guy can keep his life moving up.
I am equally Glad that we're keeping Bruce (sorry Lotus). I still believe that Bruce has brought class & professionalism to our team. Now Scott will help solidify our talent evaluations. |
Re: Scot McCloughan to be new Redskins GM
I graded a B. I am consciously optimistic, but his past stints ending with trouble have me concerned.
|
Re: Scot McCloughan to be new Redskins GM
I really don't think the drinking will be an issue anymore. Sounds like he's cleaned that part of his life up. He's a grown man and if he wants to have a beer then so be it. Just keep it under control.
|
Re: Scot McCloughan to be new Redskins GM
I wouldn't be surprised if Ahmad Brooks (Former Redskin Perry Brooks son) a FA and a player McCloughan brought to SF from Cincy is one of our 1st FA signings when the period starts. Ahmad is in his early 30's (maybe a year or 2 contract) he has plenty of gas left in the tank.

Shouldn't McCloughan pick the DC, now?

We all hope so, but as a grown man he's had to leave two good jobs because he drank vodka like the rest of drink water |

No reason to hate on him because he isnt a proper bourbon man. |
Re: Scot McCloughan to be new Redskins GM
The drinking is definitely a concern. Hopefully he's got it under control now and understands you only get so many chances. As for having a beer here and there, I'm not going to pretend to be a 12 step expert or understand his situation.
I've heard of alcoholics that can manage it and have a drink now and then, while some have to give it up completely. It's like any other addiction, everyone has to find their own way. |

Maybe that is why the local ABC store is all out of Vodka ? I too hope has can control his drinking .... for his quality of life . As far as his job here , he can drink Vodka , JD and Rum every day if he does his job like he did in Seattle and SF . |

So our savior is a raging alcoholic? Only the Redskins....
|
Re: Scot McCloughan to be new Redskins GM
I just wana find his other t. And if he has a drinking problem, and just signed on with the disfunctional Redskins, mfr, he'll be in Betty Ford by the draft.
|
Re: Scot McCloughan to be new Redskins GM
He left both San Fran and Seattle right before the draft. Is there a worse time for a GM to take a "leave of absence?" It's like Santa going on vacation on Dec. 24.

People with an alcohol/drug problem have it. They don't want to, but they do. The trouble does not go away because the individual changes "poison". He could be one of the rare few that can manage that. Completely erasing alcohol from the affected persons life is a shockingly difficult thing to face, and the downfall of many. He may however be one of the very rare types that can moderate. On the bright side, there are millions of fully functional and productive drunks and junkies in this country at any given moment. Many will finally figure it out and go clean, restoring them to a full life without the other incumbent problems. If you are in a meeting at work with 10 people, on average 2 are drunks/junkies. The fun part is figuring out who they are. Make NO mistake, I am totally behind this deal and very excited at the prospect!! As has been said, there may be hope for us yet! HTTR.... |

He is also from the area. My brother in law used to be friends with him. Although he did have some trouble here due to who he used to run with, it almost cost him his NFL career before he ever made it there (almost got him kicked out of UVA). So maybe he wants to avoid the area to not get back in with the wrong crowd that he already knows here. |

Re: Scot McCloughan to be new Redskins GM
I heard a night time segment on ESPN affiliate in the area who had Vinnie on last night to discuss off season moves and "All things Football"
I was thinking.....WTF would he know about that? |
Re: Scot McCloughan to be new Redskins GM
So him and Bruce are friends and we hired him to evaluate talent for us?
No wonder last year was one of our best drafts we've had in years and people wanted to give Bruce credit for that lol. |

Already won it in my book. This is probably the best move Dan has made since he bought the team. Let's hope his patience and Scott's demons stay at bay. |

Re: Scot McCloughan to be new Redskins GM
Seems like a great move but I'll grade it in a couple of years. Been a fan since 86 and this has been one of the more demoralizing years to watch. Cancelling the NFL package.

In response to a claim that Bruce makes us look more professional, I should have said, "Bruce continues a brilliant lineage, one which includes Bozo the Clown, that makes us laughingstocks." |
