Re: Redskins Expected to Release Coles

WTF?!

I don't like the fact that he's going to be gone, but you all are being a little hypocritical. I'm sorry to say, but if Coles doesn't like the system, I think he should be able to leave. A franchise can cut a guy if he doesn't fit its system, why shouldn't a player be able to leave if he doesn't like the system. To be clear, I am speaking in general, I, in no way, want to see Laveraneus Coles leave the Skins. I love the guy. However, how can everybody get on a soapbox about loyalty from the players when organizations treat it like its a 4 letter word. No organization is loyal to its players anymore, especially not this one. I am a Redskins fan, but I have to say, this team may be reaping what it has sewn for the last few years. I love Coles, I love the Skins. This is a sad day. I'm shocked.

What's unfortunate about all this is the fact that Gibbs is caught in the middle of it. If Spurrier were the coach, I probably wouldn't mind that much, however, if Spurrier were the coach Coles would probably wanna stay. Now what do we do with Gardner? Is he still gone? The passing game is in bad shape.

Re: Redskins Expected to Release Coles

With all due respect to Laveranues Coles, this is great news to me. Coles was miserable and that has a very destructive effect on the atmosphere of the team. Give him credit for not going public – but the players all knew, the coaches – everyone.

We need “all for one and one for all” players on our team. That is what makes for a great team.

In addition, Coles may never get back to his pre injury form and if not, ability wise he is just getting too high a paycheck.

We have an excellent player in Taylor Jacobs who just needs room to blossom, and we may well have Mike Williams on our roster soon.

Gibbs made a typical super classy move in agreeing to release him outright. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. That is good also in that in generates the respect of players, and potential free agents.

Speaking of free agents, I hope we get a player like Andre Davis. I hope we pass on those big names – unless the staff really comes to believe they would add a tremendous amount to the ballclub.

A potential lineup could include:

Taylor Jacobs
Mike Williams
Andre Davis
James Thrash

We probably need another free agent, but that is a good group right there in my view.

As far as being unhappy with the offense – those are just comments to be ignored. We are building something special here, and our offense is going to be super. Coles just doesn’t fit in with the kind of team we are building. I wish him well and hope he finds a team that is going to highlight him, and I hope he recovers from his injury soon. We will have an excellent receiving corps without him.

Re: Redskins Expected to Release Coles

Our WR situation is a F'in disaster. What the hell is going on. Even if it gives us room to sign Pierce and Smoot that leaves us with JAMES THRASH at number 1....are you F'in serious????? We all know what happened with him as number one with the Eagles....nothing. Even if we draft Edwards who I personally have no faith in or Williamson I do not see them being a number 1 their first year. Williams might be the best to come in and make a contribution right away but he still is not going to be a number one this year. We have to at least trade him to get someone who could step in or at least a draft pick and with the cap room go after a big name like Porter and then maybe draft another guy. Taylor Jacobs and James Thrash would be the worst 1-2 in the league and then at 3 we would MAYBE have McCants who is in the dog house with Gibbs for some reason so he will be a non-factor. I just don't see how a team with an offense that played as bad as ours did will lose its top 2 WR's especially a big playmaker like Coles.......this can't be happening

Re: Redskins Expected to Release Coles

I hope you all are right about Jacobs because I haven't really seen it. I'm not sure to what you're all referring. He looked alright, but I don't think Jacobs should be the #1 receiver next year. That just doesn't sound like a good plan to me. Even if we get Williams or the kid outta South Carolina, I don't like the receiving corps next season. This sucks!

Re: Redskins Expected to Release Coles

Coles' attitude was very destructive. He had to go. He is not the same player who came here originally, and there is no guarantee he will ever be that player.

Look at the NE Patriots - they have talented players who play together as a team very well and very unselfishly. One receiver even played on defense for much of the year.

That is the winning model in my view.

If Gibbs thought it was hurting the team by releasing him, he wouldn't have done it. He's doing it in a classy way, but the fact that he is considering it at all to me says that he knows our team will be better off without Coles.

No disrepect to Coles - for him to be on this team is out of the question. He is dragging everyone down. He HAS to go, or change his attitude.

Re: Redskins Expected to Release Coles

i think LC's toe has a major part in this.

he is not himself with the injury. he could be done in 2 years because of it(yes i know i'm not a doctor). he doesnt want to get surgery on it.

any team that gets him is going to have to consider the toe. he is damaged good. i dont think a team will trade for him. if he can give us the rest of hte SB back, i think we will be better off in a few years.

but this does change the draft plants. btw, 3 average nlf wr's doesnt equate to one good one.

Yeah I think 57 posts in about an hour is close to record for a non-game discussion thread. And at midnight no less! Where did everyone here about this? I saw it on wp.com and came here to see what everyone was saying. Little did I know it had just been posted on WP.com and I would be among the first Skins fans to have a seizure over this. There are Redksins fans everywhere just sleeping soundly now. Little do they know the importance of this night.

I was just going to check in on the site, I expected a handful of posts, nothing major, then all of a sudden I see the words

Coles...expected...released...

I'm like wait a second, I swear I read it about 3 times before I finally clicked on the link to the WP article, that's when it really sank in. I think a part of me was refusing to believe it and thought it was some joke.

I'm shocked, stunned and just got home with a 12 pack.
I remember at the end of the season in a press conference Gibbs mentioning LC's toe and surgery and it seemed in his voice that he was really for having him get the surgery. Coles doesn't want to risk it, but I think he'd still be a Redskin if he had. Coles is a great player and gives his all every down, however because of his injury he didn't help the team as much as he could've. I still trust Joe Gibbs and do think that LC will never be as good as he was when he got here.

Re: Redskins Expected to Release Coles

This is certanly not the news I wanted to wake up to this morning but I just get the feeling it is better this way that Coles leaves by mutual concent rather than fester away collecting his pay check and our offence would just not move on .

It sucks and might explain why our offence simply didn't work this year if none of the top three WR of the Spurrier system bought into the Gibbs way of things . It will be interesting to see what happens next

Re: Redskins Expected to Release Coles

wow...i hadnt been able to get the site to work for a while so i was just gonna wait till tomorrow, then i see this. damn.

i think we need to bring in jerry porter and take braylon edwards if available, if not then take mike williams. porter will come cheaper than buress, and we cant have a rookie as the #1 wideout. i dont think that thrash or jacobs are #1 recievers right now. i think edwards should be chosen over williams because he is better all around. he is faster, and is consistent, 3 1000 yard seasons in a row. but we def need to take a reciever first round, and i think jerry porter would be a good fit.

Re: Redskins Expected to Release Coles

I'm not too upset about Coles wanting out. It's not like his play has led us to the playoffs or anything, as a matter of fact, I think his productivity went down last year, quite a few dropped critical balls and, hell, if he's bitchin' about not gettin' any deep balls, how's about trying to get some seperation downfield? He didn't do much of that last year either. Only thing is, I would like to see some draft picks or something for him, although some salary cap room is nice, too.

How about trading Coles and Gardner for Michael Clayton and a pick? It seems Gruden may want Gardner, so lets give him Coles too. I'm down here near Tampa and see highlights of Clayton, let me tell ya, he is the real deal. I'd love to see him in burgandy and gold.

Re: Redskins Expected to Release Coles

The release of Coles is not the real problem, the real problem is why? And the reason seem's to be that he feel's Gibb's is so out of touch that he is willing to give up a lot of his signing bonus to get out, I have a bad feeling about this and Gibb's being able to come back into form after such a long absence. If he can't get a pro like Coles into the flow of the offense how's he going to manage to do it with a rookie? My biggest concern on this matter of Gibb's not coming around were his post game comment's and insisting we took shot's downfield when we all know we might have thrown semi deep once or twice a game, I don't care how many injuries you have our offense was just pathetic, the big questio to me that stand's out with this new's is this, is Gibb's for the most part washed up? because I didn't see a coach who was progressing as the season went on, I hope I am wrong but Gibb's reminded me to much of S.S. last season wr screen, after wr screen.

Well, I've had an entire night to have it sink in..... and I dont feel at all better about this. I honestly thought this was going to be a big joke when I woke up this morning. I'm still freaking shocked. Were in some serious trouble at the WR position, we cant even think of drafting elsewhere. I'm very bitter right now.
