This is a band aid move if anything. We're still going to need to grab another blue chip NT in the next couple of years.

That is not true.

It is true that no one can sign FA's whose contracts lapse and who change years of service with the theoretical league new year. It appears there will be many of these FA's once a new CBA is arranged.

But players who have been cut, rather than having their contracts lapse, and who have enough years of service immediately become unrestricted free agents and anyone can sign them. Whether it is wise to sign them is a separate issue.

Re: Shaun Rogers and Redskins Talking

From: Yardbarker.com

Since defensive tackle Shaun Rogers has been released by the Browns, there is good reason to speculate whether or not the Dallas Cowboys will pursue him.

The Cowboys new defensive coordinator Rob Ryan coached Rogers in Cleveland for the past two seasons and raved about his talent in the past.
Ryan said the following during the summer of 2009,

“He is a tremendous physical specimen. He is so athletic for a big man. I’ve been around the best in football. I’ve been around Warren Sapp in college. I coached Jamal Williams and Kevin Williams, a couple of decent All-Pro defensive tackles. Shaun Rogers is tremendous. Absolutely tremendous. Any system that he plays in, he is going to be dominant.”

With Ryan having good things to say about Rogers and the idea that the Cowboys might move current nose tackle Jay Ratliff to defensive end, it may make the acquisition of Rogers a no brainer.

The only problem right now is Rogers latest down fall. He has had trouble in the past of playing up to his potential and right now at the age of 31, he isn’t getting any younger.

Also Rogers’ health must be a concern since he has been battling hip and ankle injuries over the past couple of seasons.

Don't forget Aubrayo Franklin of the 49ers and Kris Jenkins when healthy. Other premier NT's include Casey Hampton and Jay Ratliff. To be fair though Scouts Inc did have Rogers tied among the best interior D-Lineman so it may be fair to say he's tops in the league when healthy. At the very least I'm sure Orakpo would be excited to have another Texas Alum up front.
I mean that Shanny has set the bar on how he expects his players, including vets, to practice & play. Rogers would know he's not coming here to loaf & collect one of danny's big checks.
Excuse me, but once Danny Boy's big fat signing bonus check clears the bank and goes into a player's bank account, that player can loaf and create all kinds of dastardly distractions - - - because once the check is cashed, he has what he wanted from the Redskins. Shanahan can fuss and fume and stomp his feet - - but the money is already in the player's account.

If "getting paid" is at the top of the player's agenda, Shanahan is totally impotent should it come to a confrontation. See Shanny vs Fat Albert last year. If anyone declares Shanahan the winner in that spitting contest, he does not understand what happened and who is in charge of the next move.

Character and self-motivation are the keys to signing useful free agents - - not just stats and Madden ratings and declarations that the guy is "a beast".

Rogers can play very well when he wants to and is healthy. The key part of that is "wants to" because injuries cannot be predicted. The Skins have to figure out just how much he "wants to play" as opposed to "wants to be paid". The failure of the FO to do that over the past decade or so has been a significant part of the team's failures on the field.

Re: Shaun Rogers and Redskins Talking

Shaun Rogers reminds a bit of those veteran RB's (Larry Johnson and Willie Parker) we signed last offseason...their best years are behind them. All this talk of Shaun Rodgers is the 4th best NT or 5th best or whatever, it does not matter. That is true from his play over a year or two ago, not in 2010/2011 season. In the NFL, one or two years is a lot and it means the difference of really being a top 5 player and not being in the NFL at all or being a backup/role player.

No No No. Could we please stop reaching on middle aged players whose only issue we know of is motivation issues? No, less talent than Albert. Similar motivation issues, and older. Vet min, maybe, but that aint happening. Possibly a 2 year stop gap, at the right price, maybe. But i want a 22 year old 340lb'er with quick feet. Is that so much to ask for? haha

First of all, we haven't signed him yet and just because we're bringing him in doesn't mean we're going to sign him.

This is, in my opinion, a harmless move if we do sign him. We have, particularly with no free agency or trades possible right now, limited options in improving our team. Adding some veteran DL help (and considerably younger than PD and Holliday) at what I expect will not be much money is fine by me. Just because we bring in one veteran doesn't mean it's the same old Skins and we're abandoning any and all efforts to get younger

No disagreement about the past decade or so, but this is a new regime.
AH's deal was signed before Allen got here & Allen said he would've never made such a deal. Take a look at some of the former big name vets that were signed last year, did any of them get a large bonus? Not to my knowledge. W. Parker & L. johnson were brought in & cut w/no impact on the team financially.

I see a similar situation w/Rogers. My point is, if they think he's worth signing, he'll have a deal heavy in incentives. If he can get more elsewhere, they won't up the ante for him. While I don't have great confidence in all Shanny's personel decisions, I have confidence in his ability to enforce standards & expectations for his players, we saw that w/AH. I have confidence in Allen as a fiscal conservative of sorts, he's a bargain shopper not an impulse buyer.

Re: Shaun Rogers and Redskins Talking

I thought alot about this possible move and its alot of back and forth and good arguements can be made on the pros and con. In the end I think we should bring him in here and put him at NT. When looking at the weakness on this team, the DL stands out more than any other area IMO. We need major help there and we cant just do it all through the draft, especially with limited picks yet again.

2 points in this move, the first Bruce Allen is not going to give a crazy ass contract. Second, Fat F*ck POS cannot be compared to Shaun Rodgers. FFPOS circumstances are different, brought in by a different regime and basically his issue is he didnt want to play. Rodgers never been accused of effort that I know about, just several off the field issues.

Low risk in an area of the team that was just god aweful. Sign him up

Re: Shaun Rogers and Redskins Talking

Well, Kemo is leaving, Phillip Daniels like will not be back, Haynesworth should be gone or ineffective...we need some D-lineman and the draft really needs to focus on the O-line first.

Carter, McIntosh and Wilson will likely be discarded as Haslett tries to get the 3-4 personnel he needs. Carlos Rogers will want too much money to keep.

We need to pick up a lot of 3-4 pieces and we don't have enough picks. Hopefully Rogers has grown up and learned from his stupidity, because he certainly has the talent to contribute.

yeah shaun rogers, thats the guy that demands a trade with every team hes been with Lions/Browns I believe. He is just like AH. Great talent but his off the field selfishness carries back onto the field and seems like he is more disruptive than what he is really worth.

Where our the blue collar guys that want a contract, agree to the terms ,and plays lights/everything thats asked of him since it is his job and as a man values what his respect level and word is good for? (also must have passion to play beyond a paycheck) Where are they?

Ruhskins 02-11-2011 09:37 AM

Re: Shaun Rogers and Redskins Talking

From a football standpoint, signing Rogers is a good idea because he's been actually playing the 3-4 NT position for the past three seasons in Cleveland and has the built for that role.

We all know Haynesworth is a POS, but this is my beef with the coaching staff and the approach to the NT position. 3-4 defense teams like the 49ers, Patriots and Steelers all made sure they retained their star NTs last offseason. Green Bay went out and drafted BJ Raji to build him into the dominant NT he is becoming. Shanahan gambled with a headcase 4-3 DT (Haynesworth) and a 4-3 DT with health issues that had not played the NT position since 2005 (Kemo).

Right now this team needs to be set at the NT position. Rogers is a little bit of help, it would be huge if he is able to stay healthy and out of trouble. But the team should also hope to develop Bryant and/or draft a NT in the draft.

I totally agree that bringing him in is no big deal. We're certainly not going to give him a big contract. He'll be 32 next month and hasn't played much the past few seasons. If he's healthy and his head is right, he could help out in the trenches. If he does sign, I'd imagine it would be a short-term deal with lots of incentive based money.

The only way this will be a big deal (in a negative way) is if we overvalue and overpay him, expecting him to be some sort of anchor.

MTK 02-11-2011 11:24 AM

Give me Rogers over AH, especially since he will cost a fraction of AH. And at least Rogers won't pout about playing the nose.

Can't fill all our needs in the draft alone, like it or not we need to sign free agents.

Ditto. I find it funny how no matter who's name is brought up at some point someone will inherently find something to say negatively about the player of interest. Since AH most likely won't be here, but he is hopefully the team can find a way to keep him on the field, it will be nice to have a player willing to play NT until we can either get Bryant playing dominantly or find someone else in the yrs to come. Maybe they can look to fill other needed spots now and maybe AH and Shanahan work out some sort of agreement and our DL is a monster next yr. <- I doubt it happens though, but AH could play a couple plays then Rogers could relieve AH for a couple of plays and visa versa.
