Re: Where are Kelly & Thomas?
From what I've seen this year there is no reason for Yoder to ever be on the field when Davis can be there instead (and I'm not just saying that because of Yoder's missed block yesterday). Davis is an effective blocker and can't emerge as a threat in the passing game if he's sitting on the sidelines. I was really questioning the decision to draft him but I think he may actually be the closest to making a significant impact.
Devin Thomas should be returning kicks, and I see him getting open but he's often the 4th (at best) option. Campbell just doesn't have the time to check off that many receivers. Until Moss or ARE is off this roster, it appears that Thomas' touches will most come somewhat unconventionally for a receiver (returns, reverses) quote] It drives me nuts that Yoder is on in place of Davis and Rock / ARE is returning kicks in place of Thomas. ARE isnt working at returning punts give someone else a try. There is room for impovment on kick off returns, give someone else a try. Why has Marko Mitchell been inactive for 2 games now? I guess its either 4 rbs (including Mike Sellers) or 5 wrs? Thomas and Kelly are not making a impact on the field so give someone else a try! |

To add to that we are trying out Chris Henry..wtf? So how many backs are we going to carry now? 6? And 50% of them can't run..lol. How about we bring in a OL? Hmmm..Ponder that..lol We should have gotten rid of Betts and Rock. I am really beginning to question the FO now.. |
Re: Where are Kelly & Thomas?
Here is a question, and it may be dumb. Why can't we have more plays where Thomas and Kelly are the 1st option? Our line sucks, but quick slants should be easy. Right?

Re: Where are Kelly & Thomas?
The Redskins just cannot execute a respectable fade route. The last time it was in the playbook was in the Michael Westrbrook days and even then we only ran it once a year because he would tear up a knee coming down with the ball.
I just don't understand what people see in Jumpball Jesus. He is tall and can probably jump but so can a million other people at home watching football. I hope he works out but I'm not going to get my hopes up over a camp scrub, I did with Darnarian McCants, Tydus Winans, Leslie Sheppard, Jacques Green and the legendary Taylor Jacobs... |

This same critique is coming from several sources now, Cossell, ESPN and now NFL Network guys were saying the same thing yesterday. I guess on film it is clear these two guys are not getting any separation from their defenders. In my experiences I have found that guys that have weak or worn knees tend to have a problem cutting at full speed. I think both of these guys have had past knee problems? I would like to see Marko get some reps with the first team in a game. These two jokers Kelly/Thomas have been given enough time to prove themselves. It is time to give someone else a try and see if it is not the QB or system and not the receivers. |

Had JC played the second half as he did the first half, I would have been fine with all the criticism and demand for him to be benched. Do I say that he's an elite QB? No. Heck, I want him to be a game manager. And while he completely sucked in the first half (it was awful). He won the game in the second half. The Redskins offensive problems go way beyond JC. However, right here, right now, he's the best option we have. That's not going to change and fans should hope for the best. |

Re: Where are Kelly & Thomas?
i expect 0 from thomas but kelly's lack of production is surprising. he's got the size and talent to go over the middle (and the hands). is it his route running? unable to get open? very frustrating. I also don't understand why davis isn't being used more- he's too talented to be a bust.

A player who makes plays in GAMES, not just practice. They may have only been preseason games but that's all he's been called on and he's done better than MK or DT in them. I see a young guy making blocks down field his first year in the league. I also see a guy "getting it" a lot sooner than MK or DT have done. He has also "earned" his chance, not by his draft status, but by his work. All you can do is give the guy a chance and see how he does. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. If he were a high draft pick he'd probably already be playing. |
Re: Where are Kelly & Thomas?
I remember at the beginning of the season. All the football experts and analysts were saying a key to the Redskins season was one of the 2nd round pick receivers stepping up. At first the front runner was Thomas. The reports were that he worked with JC through out the off season to get better and more prepared for the season. Ironically, Kelly took over the second WR spot after hardly playing last year. Saying that, Kelly still hasn't showed all this ball snatching potential he was touted for in the off season. In preseason Marko really shined. Some say it was just preseason and that it doesn't translate to the regular season. But it seems that Kelly and Thomas have been no existent. I think that the coaching staff has really lost confidence in them. As well as JC.
On the pass that was intended for Kelly that ended up being a INT. I didn't see proper positioning and efffort in him going up for the ball. He went for it at an awkward angle and allowed a smaller DB force him to the sidelines before the play on the ball. This guy is 6'3 and didn't extend properly for a jump ball effort. That INT was on JC. But when you look at taller receivers like Calvin Johnson and Randy Moss. They go up and snatch the ball from smaller DBs. My thoughts were that was the reason we drafted him. I have also heard that he is not getting separation from the defenders. Is it premature to think that Mitchell should be bumped up on the depth chart since he has a nack for catching touchdowns and also has more speed for separation? We wonder why our offense is looking the same as it has last year. Most of the blame has been on JC. But shouldn't the 2nd year WRs be held accountable also? They have been no existent. So basically my whole point is that we are back to where we were before we drafted them. Moss Cooley and ARE as our options!! On that note Fred Davis has been non-existent also. So where do you think we should go from here. Please chime in...
That play was VERY VERY SIMILAR to the one that Brandon Marshall had vs. DallASS |

Until Moss or ARE is off this roster, it appears that Thomas' touches will most come somewhat unconventionally for a receiver (returns, reverses) For all his height, Kelly really struggles with those fade or lob patterns. They should be throwing more passes over the middle to him. Catch, turn, and run.
Davis missed a block too (badly). And I'm not sure how Yoder is supossed to block two people. That end guy is usually unaccounted for. It was just a good play be Ronde. In terms of Kelly and Thomas, we've been playing from behind in every game and the tendency there is to get the ball to the people you trust (by both the HC and the QB). Kelly and Campbell don't seem to quite be in synch (this is essentially his rookie season) and Thomas hasn't been in that much as far as I can tell. I was actually encouraged by yesterday. 16 points in two quarters is about as productive as they've been under Zorn. Jason needs to forget about his rating and being perfect and cautious and let the ball fly. Great QBs throw picks from time to time (Favre?) because you have to take risks. The margins are too close at the NFL level to have guys wide wide wide open all the time. |

Kelly is a player, but it hurts him that we're trying to use him as a deep threat that he just doesn't really have a skill set for. If Marko Mitchell can get down the field, our offense is probably fine in the long term. But Santana Moss STILL plays a role in the offense that can't be replaced. And with the way he started this season, it was troublesome. But Santana's here this year and next, and then who knows. Will we still have a deep threat? Depends. |
Re: Where are Kelly & Thomas?
Like I said before, there's nothing wrong with Malcolm Kelly's polish and route running abilities. He's just never going to get behind the safeties in his career.

That is exactly what I was thinking and you see what Marshall did with that pass. Was it perfect. NO. But he made something out of it and attacked the ball. I see more of that type of attitude from Mitchell than I do from Kelly. |

We have no idea what Marko Mitchell is like as a player, especially since Nevada is a run heavy WAC team. The guy has skills, but those skills may or may not include a deep game. |
Re: Where are Kelly & Thomas?
This is a question that doesn't need endless pages of debate to answer. Look around the league and you see a shit ton of ROOKIE WRs making really significant contributions to their football team. Minn, NY, Philly all have very young guys - like 1st or 2nd year - making big plays, and I'm sure there are ample more I just don't follow enough teams to point everyone out. Meanwhile the Skins employ a WR coach who HAS NEVER DEVELOPED A SINGLE PLAYER AT THE PROFESSIONAL LEVEL. I think he's been w/ us for over 5 years now. The thought should be simply mind-boggling. This is like a doctor who never diagnoses a single patient, a loan officer who never closes a single loan, a lawyer who never wins a single case. The only wide-outs who have any success w/ the Skins are guys who learned elsewhere. Hixon hasn't taught a single player in his group to run a crisp route, create separation from the defender, or position his body to block out the defender. Our young wide-outs look retarded out there but I'm saying it's not really something you can hold against them.

Good point. To be honest I can't remember the last time we developed a WR we drafted in a while. I think a lot of our position coaches are suspect. Add DB coach to that list also. |
Re: Where are Kelly & Thomas?
I'm sorry, but a combined 10 receptions for 82 yards for 3X 2nd round picks is unacceptable. Thomas has a whopping reception, big Fred 3 and Malcom 6. Time to go back to the drawing board like the defense did this week and get these guys more involved.

Yep, Marko should be given a chance. Thomas should be demoted to #5, it's sad that the skins can't exploit his talents. |
Re: Where are Kelly & Thomas?
Have to say it is most likely the FO and the dumbass dealing of our first rounders of recent past for underperfroming FA's. Thomas probably should have been passed over just because of where he went to school(Michigan St). Michigan St players usually don't make it in the pros. Last guy they had that even made a tiny bit of impact was Lorenzo White and he got stuck in a RB committee in Tennessee. Kelly should have been "vetted" better, as they should not have taken a gamble on him with the bad knee. Why we take gambles on a consistent basis is beyond me, especially when most of them haven't pan out. No matter what happens after this season with regards to Zorn saving his job or packing his bags, we are stuck with 2 busts at WR. Kelly gets somewhat of a pass from missing last season, but Thomas should have improved somewhat.

Re: Where are Kelly & Thomas?
After watching the game over and analyzing the game...I found Kelly to be open quite a bit. Why he is not breaking out is a complex issue. Either JC is locked on to one reciever (mostly Moss) or the o-line just broke down. The main time that sticks in my mind is the JC interception to Moss. Kelly was open down the center of the field for a TD!!! No confidence and lack of time is why I think Kelly is due soon! As for DT I have no answer...He does not look very good!

In a season so far that very few things have gone right, what makes you think these rooks will step in to the limelight. Most of those other situations they have something else going for them and they step up and compliment them. Key word COMPLIMENT ! They are not doing it alone. Where as here they will have to do it basiclly alone as JC has not completely clicked yet! If things ever start to click I hope to see the young pups step there game up! But it won't happen till play calling sync with players execution. |
Re: Where are Kelly & Thomas?
A list of well-known wide receivers who didn't top 1000 yards until their third year, or later:
Santana Moss Steve Smith Donald Driver Terrell Owens Derrick Mason Of course there are the freaks who immediately produce, but if that's what you demand, then you are asking too much. Give our young WRs at least 1 more year before you are ready to kick them to the curb. Impatience is what drives our endless cycle of FA acquisitions, draft neglect, and ultimately our continued mediocrity. Chill out fools! |
Re: Where are Kelly & Thomas?
I was at the game and some of Kelly and Thomas not getting the ball is on JC's bad reads. On the last interception he threw, he had Kelly in the slot on the left and he BLEW past his guy and was wide but JC was locked on Moss and made an awful decision.
I like JC, but his inability to read the field is killing us. |
