re: UPDATE: Bears Sign 29 Year Old RT Shaffer
I would certainly take a look at KS if I where the Skins quickly, as I don't think he will be on the market long.
IMO he could be a huge upgrade over what we have now at RT, and this is going to be one if not the most important holes left to fill. Still relatively young at 29, good size, doesn't miss games, or have injury problems. And is a solid performer. Scout.com: Browns Release RT
I agree with this. And, as Smootsmack pointed out, the Browns aren't trying to get rid of him. They want him back, presumably for less money. I say unless the bidding gets too high, grab him. One less slot to worry about. I like the idea of a drafted tackle but he is not that old and we have many holes to fill without many good FA choices or many draft choices. |

No, it said in the story I read that the Browns want him back. Edit: link: Scout.com: Browns Release RT |
re: UPDATE: Bears Sign 29 Year Old RT Shaffer
The only question I have is how much do you guy's think it would cost to sign him?
I would go for it if there were no cap concerns, but it sounds like this guy is a mixed bag anyway. Why sign a guy that needs help often with a speedy pass rush. Draft a stud that is willing to learn and can play either side if called upon to do so. I mean the frigging Browns released him. They are on hurting unit also!!!!!! |

Yes, it's called "inside the article" info. :) |
Yes, it's called "inside the article" info.
:)
It's great that we have peops on the wp that can provide the kind of insight that comes from inside of an article! :) I don't know about this guy, but if he could compete for a starting job at RT & we can afford it, sign him. I disagree w/those that say sign him & then we can draft on D. Even if he's signed, there is still a major long term need at OT. We should draft the best prospect of the OT/LB/DE pool that is available IMO. |
re: UPDATE: Bears Sign 29 Year Old RT Shaffer
That sounds pretty good; however I'm pretty sure if we sign Shaffer, we will go on defensive side and draft LB or DE..
If we got this guy we don't need to only draft on the defense as Mack is projected late or even 2nd round so this gives us the position to trade down get another pick in late 2nd or another 3rd... then we can address more needs... IMO there are three top grade centers...Mack is one , Unger is another ( he is valuable as he has played guard as well) and Wood! All are 2nd round projected or the very last picks of the first round.. Just something to think about.. I think there is room to upgrade the o-line with youth while we solidify the holes at SLB and DE! |
re: UPDATE: Bears Sign 29 Year Old RT Shaffer
Insider info?
Hardly, actually didn't read the article though. But I thought I had heard somewhere last week that they were going to probably cut him with the intention of bringing him back at a lower price. Not much time for much Insider stuff these days, just a few things here and there, busy time at work. |
re: UPDATE: Bears Sign 29 Year Old RT Shaffer
Lets bring him in and sign him immediately, because we need an DE and outside backer so Bad it ain,t funny unless we sign one of the LB,s om the free agent market, there is some pretty good ones still out there
|
re: UPDATE: Bears Sign 29 Year Old RT Shaffer
Yeah, I'd sign him, and take best of available of OT, DE or LB at 13, or try to trade down to late first and pick up a 2nd as well.
If we sign this dude, then this truly has been a bomb free agency IMO. 2 starting linemen, a beast DT and a pro bowl CB. Plus all of our (4) draft picks. |
re: UPDATE: Bears Sign 29 Year Old RT Shaffer
I agree Soup, that would be quite the offseason for the skins. How realistic is it that we actually are able to fit this last piece of the puzzle into our D before the draft even begins?
|
re: UPDATE: Bears Sign 29 Year Old RT Shaffer
Not really, look at all the drops their receivers had, and their qb rotations, I actually think their line held up very well.
Let me put it like this, we had the 28th or so scoring offense, would you tell me that you wouldn't take Cooley if we cut him due to salary cap reasons, or if Cooley is too much of a standout, what about Betts, or Samuels?
Well if this guy is an upgrade over Jansen and Heyer then I'm fine with it. |
re: UPDATE: Bears Sign 29 Year Old RT Shaffer
Browns just signed Porkchop Womack...watch out!
|
re: UPDATE: Bears Sign 29 Year Old RT Shaffer
Any implication that we might have a shot at getting him, or just relaying a fact?

I haven't heard any word out of Ashburn, but that might be a good thing when the FO is quiet, because all the FA's we were supposedly linked to (Willis Brown), Cerrato denied it. The reason that makes Shaffer different than those two is that he has more playing experience and he can play solid for a good 2 years. To answer your question, I definetly think we have a shot at getting him, and I think Shaffer would want to play hear (Salisbury, MD) it all comes down to A. If we have enough cap room and B. How much $$ are we willing to pay him. |
re: UPDATE: Bears Sign 29 Year Old RT Shaffer
Who is better Willis or Shaffer? What I read about Shaffer is good and could work out but that cash thing keeps coming up! Here is the thing is he better then a 1st round pick in the draft that we could get? That would leave big holes left at LB and DE. Just too many needs!
|
re: UPDATE: Bears Sign 29 Year Old RT Shaffer
3/12 seems to be the going market rate for a starting caliber left tackle at this age.
That's pretty much what I would offer him as well.
sounds reasonable...then the pick can be used on defense |
re: UPDATE: Bears Sign 29 Year Old RT Shaffer
The Browns say they want to bring Shaffer back...but since cutting him they've signed OT Floyd Womack and OT John St. Clair

re: UPDATE: Bears Sign 29 Year Old RT Shaffer
Have there been any reports of us going after this guy? Usually we're the first name mentioned for a free agent...

I'm constantly checking all of the Redskin sblogs and various rumor mills and haven't heard him linked to us. |
re: UPDATE: Bears Sign 29 Year Old RT Shaffer
I think at this point many teams (i guess us included? ) are waiting to see what happens in the draft, and once the draft shakes out, those in need will start picking up what's left.

Looks like it, but it still doesn't stop from killing us with all this mysteries!! |
re: UPDATE: Bears Sign 29 Year Old RT Shaffer
Everyone is very eager to sign free agents. The guy was drafted in the 7th round, yet theres no faith we can draft a right tackle in the draft. Even using our later round picks. We have the best oline coach in the game give him a chance to do the same.
Its kinda hard to predict our draft this year. Who saw last years coming? Zorn changed the game plan. Who knows we might take a receiver again this year, turn into detroit. Maybe he wants to run 3 TE sets and needs anotehr one of them lol. |
re: UPDATE: Bears Sign 29 Year Old RT Shaffer
The problem is we don't have any cap room to sign him. If we cut Rabach that would save us 2.3 mil, and give us some money to sign him. But, I don't know why we (or anyone) haven't made any attempt to contact him, or schedule a visit because he's a decent player, with good size and let up 4.5 sacks last year. If we signed him, it would give us the luxury of drafting elsewhere like DE/OLB at 13 instead of RT.

actually we do have enough cap room to sign him and take about a 3.5 mill hit (thanks to Schneeds Cap Status thread). I think this is just the FO playing a wait and see approach because they only get one shot at getting a FA OT. |
re: UPDATE: Bears Sign 29 Year Old RT Shaffer
Any news on this guy or any other T we're looking at?

Re: UPDATE: Bears Sign 29 Year Old RT Shaffer
This is perfectly fine... if we don't get a top OT in the draft there will be some vet talent to be had afterward...

Yes. I was hoping the Redskins would grab Shaffer but he is no world beater and there should be other options later. |
Re: UPDATE: Bears Sign 29 Year Old RT Shaffer
I'm really starting to come around on Eben Britton. The only thing that concerns me though is his finesse nature as a run blocker but he seems like he has the quickness and smarts to overcome it. Either way he will improve our passing game by leaps and bounds. Plus I'm comforted by the fact that Samuals was seemingly a finesse guy in college, so it's definitely something that can be overcome.
|
Re: UPDATE: Bears Sign 29 Year Old RT Shaffer
I wish we would've gotten him but we can find a vet OT after the draft.
|
Re: UPDATE: Bears Sign 29 Year Old RT Shaffer
Has Marvel Smith signed with anyone yet? He might be the only OT of worth thats left.

No he hasn't but I think he might sign with the 49ers, and we haven't expressed any interst in him but it might happen. |

Good point... although it somehow looks like Oher may fall further than i thought possible. Meanwhile it won't surprise me if Andre Smith goes in the top 10 now. |
Re: UPDATE: Bears Sign 29 Year Old RT Shaffer
Since this can basically become the "NFL Franchise releases middle aged RT" thread, the Niners just got rid of Jonas Jennings
Jonas Jennings Statistics - Pro-Football-Reference.com He doesn't make a whole lot of sense here, though. |
